To find out which backend you are using, open Totem, go to Help | About
and it should be listed under the Totem version number.
To install totem-xine, open System | Administration | Synaptic

ls -l | grep glines in /var/games/ shows only glines.scores, which is
empty:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root games 0 2006-02-15 19:45 glines.scores
Creating the missing files with rw permissions fixes the problem.

It seems that the icon being used is /usr/share/pixmaps/nautilus.xpm,
which is 32x23 (and looks dreadful anyway). I think icons are supposed
to be 48x48 for the splash screen, aren't they?
