I don't know exactly where the preferences are located but i've renamed
~/.gnom2/gedit and /usr/share/gedit-2 directories and started Gedit. The
problem is still there. The screen gets covered in the gray layer as
when X stops responding, i guess. Again, the thing recovers when i click

If i press the F9 key to show/hide the sidepane, Gedit freezes (the
translucent gray layer) until i click somewhere. It works to select the
View Side Pane menu item, but the F9 key is handier and my prefered
way to do it.
