one way to do that could be to do auto subtitle loading only on local
locations by default, we try to avoid changing settings in a
distribution specific way

For each file opened, we do at least 10 stats. It makes loading files really
slow if you're not using the feature, and doesn't preclude people from loading
the subtitle by hand (right-click on the file, select subtitle).

From the user point of view it's a regression. I'm sure lot of users
will be confused when they'll upgrade to Hardy because of this choice.

In the changelog of totem I found the following:
totem (2.21.95-0ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low
* Support auto-loading subtitles when the suffix is upper-case
So that might be interesting to test.
Looking at totem in Gutsy there was no option regarding auto-loading
subtitles, so perhaps it was
