Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
** Changed
I have the same thing here - running the command from within a gnome
terminal. If i go to a text terminal (with ctrl-alt-F6) and run the
command sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart then it works perfectly. Probably
it can't kill itself.
How can i 'detach' this command from gnome so it can finish
** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please answer these questions:
* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
* Is gdm running?
This will help us to find and resolve the problem.
** Changed
* Is this reproducible?
Yes. It does, when you type in console sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
As above. Just type in console sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
* Is gdm running?
gdm isn't running. While
restart is to restart a running instance, why don't you use start if
it's not running?

running?
1. I can't start gdm, because it hangs on text mode (on checking
battery state at this moment) - i CAN write, but it doesn't recognise commands
that i wrote.
2. Restart in Ubuntu 8.10 (or
does gdm start normally on boot? gdm almost didn't change in jaunty so
the issue there is probably not in the init script but rather gdm not
starting correctly
