As Macstevejb said it works fine from the Menu Bar, just not the Main
Menu Applet.

I can confirm this behaviour with the main menu applet on this mornings
updates. My dmesg has he following:

The crash does not occur with the menu b
I can confirm this also (mine is on i386). If I try to launch any app
from the Applications menu the app fails to open and the panel
momentarily disappears but then refreshes itself.
If the same app is iconified in the panel it will launch fine from
there. If the app is not in the panel it launche
I can confirm this behaviour when programs are started from the main
menu applet.
It does not happen when using the alternative menu bar applet.
Started happening after installing the latest round of updates which
included gnome-panel updates.
