Unfortunately, I cannot continue reporting on this bug anymore. I have
reinstalled Karmic, done a clean install, that is, and now I am in a
process of restoring all from backups. The keyboard works just fine now,
at least with only one keyboard layout (Finnish) present. I have NOT

The Russian keyboard has the at sign in exactly the same position as the
Finnish one, that is, AltGr+2. But no great problem there, because one
would need to switch to a western keyboard in order to write an email
address anyway.

The Finnish keyboard layout had mysteriously corrected itself last night
(Eastern European Time). It even had the AT sign on the correct key,
AltGr + 2, so I got hopeful and installed the Russian keyboard layout
alongside the Finnish one. The result was a sad one.

Do you have an File .Xmodmap, Xmodmap or similar in ~/? If yes try to
delete or move him somewhere else and log in again.
