I marked bug 550222 as a duplicate of this bug report. Even if that may
not be all true, I hope and believe that also those issues will be
resolved by the solution that is currently being discussed here.

Irrespective of which changes we agree upon at last, considering the

Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that
language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing
I agree with Gunnar Hjalmarsson, if a user changes the language in GDM,
it should only change the interface language(set LANGUAGE, LC_MESSAGE
variable), not ALL locale seetings.
As a Taiwan user, the default display language after Ubuntu installed is
Traditional Chinese, but I prefer my interface

Thanks for your praising comment.
It seems to me that you, and possibly also Martin, assume that $LANG
ought to correspond to the first language in the $LANGUAGE list. That, I
believe, is a misconception, at least from a language-selector
perspective, and I fear that we have talked at
for example user's LANGUAGE is set zh_CN:zh_TW:zh_HK:en_US:en_GB

gdm set LANGUAGE to

or even
en_GB:zh_CN:zh_TW:zh_HK:en_US:en_GB
it is simple and can work.

Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different
I don't see why it should be inconsistent. If you pick a new language in
gdm, then presumably you actually want to use this language (why else
did you do it?), so in this case we should really empty $LANGUAGE. We
just need to care about leaving $LANGUAGE alone if the selected language

Gunnar,
Making up a $LANGUAGE from $LANG is hard to impossible. I think we
should just unset it, as per comment 10. Also, the gdm script should not
_ever_ modify files aside from ~/.wmrc, in particular not the user's
profile. The current one doesn't take into account different syntax

@Martin
Well, I don't consider it to be a problem, as you say in comment #10, that
language-selector distinguishes between language and other locale aspects.
That's just as it should be IMO. As far as I understand, the compromise you
currently advocate would mean that Ubuntu's localisation
Can't see how unsetting $LANGUAGE would not create new problems, so I
