When I try to play the video, totem crashes. When playing the video without the

I've noticed that too.
Totem crashes with .mpg fifes riped with AcidRip maybe cause it uses
MPlayer encoding libs (or mencode if you prefer).
Works fine with other .mpg files.
I've not tried yet but I thing it hapens with files encoded with
subtitels apart (in other file) an option of AcidRip
Some fixes are needed for Totem.
