dx9s... I don´t really understand very well what is the reason, but issuing asoundconf -set-pulse at a console also works for me. Now I can hear the drums and the login sound in gdm, and once inside the gnome session everything seems ok (totem, sound settings in the panel, etc.) I guess that the files created with the command you suggested in some way prepare Alsa applications to use pulseaudio as the default sink. So the gdm sounds now go through alsa (which then uses pulseaudio) while other applications like Totem go directly through pulse, but all of this works fine at the same time. Public bug reported: I have the latest 8.10 beta installed and want to run winxp with vmware. To unlock the winxp screen I CTRL-Alt -Del i9s needed. This combination is usually used to end sessions. Via gnome-keybindings-properties I changed this to Shift+Break, so that CTRL-Alt-Del has no other meaning in gnome-keybinding-properties. Unfortunately this combination does not work in vmware. I'm currently using the Intrepid beta (8.10) but I believe this happened to me on 8.04 also. I am using Compiz also. I attatched 2 screenshots for you. One is showing what happens by default what happens when I launch an image (I made sure the image is under the Creative Commons licence) and the other is the image zoomed out a little so you can see that there is part of the image missing underneath the bottom panel. It should send all pages and supply the page-set=even option to the job, so that CUPS removes the odd pages AFTER applying N-up. I've found out that while the 'X' is on the screen (i.e. it's loading the login window) if you Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a terminal then the system remains responsive. If you then Ctrl-Alt-F7 back to the X screen you just get a black screen and can't get to a terminal again, but pressing the power button actually shuts down the computer properly. Don't know if this helps pin-point the issue... The xprop file you attach contains the line: WM_NAME(STRING) = %c This indicates that Kopete itself is claiming that its title is %c, rather than that any window manager is misinterpreting it. Furthermore, if all of metacity, kwin, and compiz show this effect, it can't be a window-manager-specific problem. The question is, then, why KDE applications are doing this. I should reassign this somewhere, but I'm not sure where. However, can you tell me whether you're running in a locale other than US English?
