[Bug 351130] Re: [jaunty] doesn't offer to install codecs when inserting non encrypted DVD

2010-01-30 Thread EnvyGeeks
I recently ran into this problem with an unencrypted DVD as well. I
simply did:

aptitude install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

Which solved the problem. There was no need to uninstall any other
plugins, just install the ugly plugins. This is more a problem with the
plugin detection IMO than it is an error of anything.

[Bug 264585] Re: nautilus does not count files to replace before showing not enough space

2010-01-30 Thread Mahmood
I think including a Try to Copy option in the not enough space
dialogue may be more practical than intensive overwrite size
calculation. Also another nice addition to this dialogue would be a
Calculate with Overwrite button. This way the extra overwrite size
calculation will not be performed routinely in all copy operations.

The last duplicate of this bug is from 2009-12-01 and there's no
duplicates using the Lucid version of Nautilus, is any of you able to
reproduce it with Lucid or with Latest packages on Karmic?. We haven't
received any duplicates since Dec, so this is probably fixed already.
 Thanks in advance!.

[Bug 486089] Re: CPU goes to 100%, game is not playable

2010-01-30 Thread markba
After changing the theme, form 'plain' to 'tango flat' or 'tango shaded'
, the game was playable (again). However, changing the theme back to
'plain' did not lead to any difference, i.e. the bug was not
reproducable. It could be that het theme changing twice has some kind of
positive effect.

A point of interest: changing a theme, leads to a crash. I post a
separate bug for this.

[Bug 514655] [NEW] crash gnome-panel

2010-01-30 Thread Captain47
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Hello,

I must write in french, because my english is very bad... ;)

[Bug 405544] Re: Unable to burn CD or DVD with 2.6.31 kernel

2010-01-30 Thread Peter Bašista
Hello,

I can confirm that on Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 with the kernel downloaded from here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.2/
my SATA drive still refuses to work properly. The burnung fails just a few
seconds after it has started. On Windows, it burns without any problems.
I am attaching the Nero Linux burn log.
I also would like to mention that my SATA controller is set to AHCI mode in
BIOS. I would like to remain in AHCI, as I also have a SATA hard drive on the
same SATA controller and I would really like to use AHCI features like
S.M.A.R.T. and so on which, as far as I know, are not available when I set the
SATA controller to so-called IDE mode.

As in Windows it burns flawlessly, I assume that the problem is the
current linux kernel which does not support burning on SATA drives in
AHCI mode.

[Bug 203782] Re: Support low color depth to improve speed

2010-01-30 Thread bojo42
for the empathy support of low color support i did a new report. so
please head over to Bug #514666

** Description changed:

- UPDATE: as of lucid and vinagre packge 2.29.1-0ubuntu1 (along with it's
- dependencies) there is support for low color depths. but so far it seems
- that empathy can't make use of that. it would be great if it could,
- because it would make desktop sharing some what usable over most
- people's internet connections.
+ UPDATE: For Empathy's support of low color depth see Bug #514666

  Binary package hint: vinagre

I installed Hardy Alpha 4, and updated the packages so I am up to date
with Alpha 6. When I tried to remotely connect to a computer on my LAN
and it was so slow (and unusable)on Vinagre / Remote Desktop client.

I noticed TS Client had disabled the option for VNC, installing xvnc4viewer
enabled it. Xvnc4viewer was much faster and usable.
Are there other settings in Hardy that can be tweaked to fix the awful
slowness in Vinagre ?

In Vinagre I couldn't find anyway to change settings for the connection.
Is there some way of doing this?

[Bug 514134] Re: awn disappeared after update to gconf 2.28.0-1ubuntu3

2010-01-30 Thread buratinas
I guess that it is a bug of awn rather than of gconf, as awn as far as I
know is the only application to break after the update. Maybe it just
exposed one of the bugs in awn which relies on specific behavior of
gconf?

[Bug 514134] Re: awn disappeared after update to gconf 2.28.0-1ubuntu3

2010-01-30 Thread Bowmore
Made another Lucid install from the today's build.

Installing awn then resulted in all awn gconf key default values being
unassigned (no value). Starting up awn-settings failed as well. The
current awn version was released about two weeks ago so it's most
probably an awn bug.

I’m not sure why it doesn’t work for you. You have the full set of
packages.

Unfortunately I moved my system onwards to Lucid, so I can’t reproduce your
setup.
But I know that a friend added this PPA on his Karmic sytem and it worked.

Anyway, I upload another Evince to the Karmic PPA. Can you try again in

Also, do you have a ,fonts.conf?

2010-01-30 Thread Sense Hofstede
Michael: you may say it's wrong, but the developers may not agree with that.
Therefore it would be wrong to demand this change to be reversed immediately.
Of course you could argue for your case and convince the Nautilus developers
that you're right, or convince the Ubuntu Desktop team to include a patch to
fix this, but that would require action from your side. You also could provide

2010-01-30 Thread Gilbert Glick
Possibly a separate bug, but erring on the side of less churn in bug
reporting/duplication.

Using relatively freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 system

An unprivileged user attempts to change their password as follows:
Navigate to System - Administration - Users and Groups tool
Unlocks configuration--is prompted to authenticate using _privileged_ account
(surprising, but will authenticate)
Navigates to their own account - properties
Selects Change Password... and authenticates account's current password,
sets new password
Feedback is that password was changed

The password has not been changed.

[Bug 115199] Re: list of services in services-admin is not extensible

2010-01-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Maybe I should be a little more explicit: what you suggest in the bug
description is not implemented, that would require a full specification,
plus discussions with Upstart developers and people from other
distributions (even LSB?). For now I've simply allowed unknown services
to be shown in the list only with their name. No icon nor description
sadly, because getting translations would be really complex - but that's
good enough if users know about your service.

[Bug 27159] Re: Services configuration tool doesn't provide an horizontal scroll bar

2010-01-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
I've just committed upstream a change so that descriptions don't get
wider than the dialog. This way we no longer need an horizontal
scrollbar, which is a very poor workaround. So this will be fixed with
2.29.90, for Lucid.

[Bug 156073] Re: Disabling gdm-login kills X instantly

2010-01-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
There's a fix in the system-tools-backends 2.9.2: we no longer list gdm
as a service worth showing to GUI users. For now I'll assume people that
are willing to stop gdm know the commandline (reasonable, heh?), so they
can just disable it from there using the distribution's tools. This way
we don't bother users of the GUI with a dangerous and useless entry,
even protected by a big warning.

So this will be fixed in Lucid.

[Bug 200105] Re: services-admin window is very narrow by default

2010-01-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
I've just committed upstream a change in the layout that makes
description take much less horizontal space. The current width of the

This will be in 2.29.90, so eventually in Lucid.

2010-01-30 Thread Vish
The user mentions the open file dialogue in gtk.

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You
can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream.
Once submitted upstream , do report back here with the upstream bug number.
Thanks in advance!

[Bug 513175] Re: Places: unmounted drivers should not have priority over bookmarks

2010-01-30 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- Though this is something that needs to be fixed , the fix has to be done in 2
projects and is a much bigger task to be considered a papercut.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as Invalid only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 514562] Re: Default values stripped from schemas with empty short_desc attribute

2010-01-30 Thread Martin Olsson
Chris, does this need to go upstream or is it just an Ubuntu packaging
bug?

In case someone needs a workaround for this bug. Just open
System::Preferences::Keyboard and tick the checkbox called Key presses
repeat when key is held down. And in the same dialog set the Delay
and Speed sliders so that their knobs are located just under the en
letters in the word when (that's the default settings I have on my old
karmic box, but I suppose you can just try out a delay/speed setting
that feels normal to you).

[Bug 267371] Re: [gvfs] [smb] Damaged OpenOffice files from samba shares

2010-01-30 Thread varanasi
Yikes. I believe that as of the recent fuse/samba update (this AM),
this bug is back in Karmic with OO 3.1.

Open a spreadsheet from an NAS in OO
Save the spreadsheet back to the NAS, (there seems to be a short freeze after
what looks in OO like a normal save) quit OO
Re-Open the spreadsheet in OO

OO reports file corruption and will repair the file. The data looks
fine, but saving to the NAS and re-opening results in a repeat of the
corruption message and repair process.

Saving the repaired file locally avoids the repair/corrupt message when
the file is reopened. Copying the local file to the NAS lets one open
the file from the NAS without the message/process.

[Bug 80921] Re: No subpixel rendering

2010-01-30 Thread Ilja Sekler
The latest packages from the PPA work fine for me on Karmic, but why
does the evince version

2.29.2-0ubuntu2~ppa3

as reported by dpkg and apt-cache differ from

2.29.5-0ubuntu5~ppa3

as listed at https://edge.launchpad.net/~improved-lcd-
filtering/+archive/ppa? If I rebuild the packages from source on my
system, which requires deleting any references to hardening-includes in
debian/rules and debian/control, I get the correct version.

(This is totally unrelated, but evince 2.29.5, at least on Karmic,
doesn't save gui configuration globally but does this on per-file base,
which is utterly annoying...)

[Bug 514758] [NEW] gnome-terminal task bar title text does not heed profile setting

2010-01-30 Thread Victor Zamanian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

There is a problem with the task bar title text for gnome-terminal under
certain circumstances:

Under the Title and Command tab in profile settings for gnome-terminal
there is a setting: When terminal commands set their own titles:

Setting this to Keep initial title gives the expected result---at
first. As soon as the command *does* set its own title, such as bash

setting was set to Replace initial title.

Note that in the actual window, the setting is correctly keeping the

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

-- This bug has been around for quite a while and no one seems to know a fix
for this. [apart from the workaround of not displaying the location entry]
Marking it as incomplete in papercuts _for now_ .
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as Incomplete only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 401497] Re: wrong keyboard layout after upgrade with autologin

2010-01-30 Thread Arjan
Dear all,

I am experiencing a similar problem. However I would like to have a US
Int'l keyboard, but I just don't seem to get rid of the Italian keyboard
layout.

I agree with previous statement that this should be a high priority
issue, unless Ubuntu is focusing on users who don't need their keyboard
:-)

Keep up the good work!

Kind regards,

[Bug 490201] Re: [lucid] Nautilus asks password when accessing workgroup

2010-01-30 Thread garvinrick4
Used this fix and now I have network access in Workgroup in Lucid.

sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

Find this section in the file:

### Authentication ###

# “security = user” is always a good idea. This will require a Unix account
# in this server for every user accessing the server. See
# /usr/share/doc/samba-doc/htmldocs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/ServerType.html
# in the samba-doc package for details.
; security = user

Uncomment the security line, and add another line to make it look like
this:

security = user
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers

[Bug 514782] [NEW] brasero fails to recognise dvdrw drive and/or media

2010-01-30 Thread daf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

As of about yesterday, Brasero no longer recognises the DVD+RW drive (or
perhaps it's the media?) that I've been using for ages. I've installed
K3b, and that works just fine. This seems to have started since I
blanked a DVD+RW disc in the drive from right-clicking it on the desktop
and selecting erase.

Win7 has no problem with the drive or media either.

I would gladly provide more information if anyone can tell me what would
be useful.

[Bug 494096] Re: Clicking the title of a window is bringing a window underneath it into focus

2010-01-30 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I can confirm this. It started happening in 9.10 for me too, and it's
still happening on my freshly installed Lucid.

It's rather annoying because the lost clicks randomly affect the
applications below the focused window: they may e.g. close an
application by hitting its [X] button, or they may even delete stuff by
clicking on some Cut/Delete/Paste button, and the user may not even
notice it, as the application where that happens isn't focused!

Re: [Bug 514298] Re: users-admin : Scrolling through list resizes listbox

2010-01-30 Thread James Bellinger
Hmm, you are right. The name is longer for me than for root. Though,
what is strange about it is, in both cases there is plenty of space
between the names and the buttons, so it shouldn't need the extra
space anyway..

The reason I recommend Rename for the name instead of Change like
the others is that it's not immediately clear what is being changed
otherwise (since it's just a person-head and a name). Also it would
break up the repetition and is more specific.

If you want to provide a full UI review, a message to our mailing list
would be more appropriate I guess. For now: I think I'll change Edit
to Change, I was misled by the French translation into thinking it was
the right term (actually this is a stock GTK+ button).

The alignment problem for Help and Close is known, but I'm not sure
how I can fix this, since that box is normally automatically configured
by GTK+. I'll see what we can do, but obviously that's not top priority
since that can be change at any time without risks - better get the
 tools working right first.

So I'll keep that report to tackle the resizing issue. I suspect the
list isn't getting wider when you select root, but rather the main part
of the window is getting wider when you select your own account. I know
this can happen when labels get wider than the default, which mainly
depends on your locale. Could you provide screenshots of both
situations? BTW, this has changed in the latest upstream code, so that
may not behave the same now.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

When I scroll through the user list, the listbox resizes. This looks
_extremely_ unprofessional and ought to be fixed.
What's even more interesting is that it does it needlessly. I scroll onto
root from my own account and it gets wider (!).

Another thing, the symmetry on the right is nice, but it's really not good
for naming. Instead of Edit for all three (not very specific), put 'Rename'
for the name and 'Change' for the other two. The first has no label so it's
not clear what it is initially, and there's no such thing as 'editing' an
Account Type, since it's a list of options not a big, configurable thing. One
could argue for editing a password, but nobody uses English that way, they
 say 'change my password'.

Also, 'Help' and 'Close' are a few pixels squished in from the sides and
don't align with anything else. It looks weird. :)

Re: [Bug 18351] Re: [users-admin] Edit groups for user properties

2010-01-30 Thread James Bellinger
Any time one is setting up a new user, they want to add the groups for
them. Having to go through two screens is a lot more clicks.
I can't see any reason why if the ability already exists for
privileges, there can't be a Groups tab.
