This might be a duplicate of bug #572550. Taking a tip from comments
there, I removed compiz and compiz-core, and the problem went away.

When ejecting a CD during playback rhythmbox shows Could not pause playback
message

Binary package hint: brasero
Simple data CD, told it to save it in the slowest speed, worked, worked,
and worked, and finally got a popup saying something like Recording
failed with unknown error.
What should I do to be able to record a CD?

This is due to over-zealous PTRACE restrictions that went into the most
recent kernel package. I will dial this back a bit.
