Re: [Bug 313228] Re: a program is still running but i want shut down anyway
I have once tried to debug this in gnome-session (which is a pain for non-gnomerati) and found that somehow there was a dbus client in the inhibiters list. Unfortunately all the details (such as the originating process id) were empty, null or zero. I did find at the time, however, that this never happened on a re-launched X session (say after forced logout and re-login) This made me think that it could be due to particularly fast boot. Is your system fast to boot up? Mine boots maverick in 5 to 6 seconds (on dual SSDs) There might even be something astray from the gnome-greater that is left hanging around in the desktop session. Another gnome issue on my box that is _definitely_ timing dependent is that my gdm greeter will hardly ever show all the user images. In fact it will usually display the first 2 (out of 4) but frequently none. I've similarly tried to debug that behaviour but haven't found a cause. The code is overly complex due to the dynamic zoom effects, yet the callback for the list box population is correctly called all the time. Apparently there is some early face condition on my fast system causing the user images to be unavailable. [1] What prompted me to write this up here was the fact that this bug has gone for a long time without any substantial clues so I reckon I'd just offer my humble 0.02$ Oh, perhaps other users affected by this bug can use d-feet to debug the state of dbus gnome session with the hung process. Seth [1] Sorry for the off topic rant. I will file a separate bug for this once. - Sent from a phone that is smart enough to allow me to successfully send SMS messages. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313228 Title: a program is still running but i want shut down anyway -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

That's actually a very good question, I've since restarted and had a few new sessions, I'll check when I get back home today. I didn't have any nautilus windows open, but I don't know if it was running in the background. I had attempted to start 4 instances by clicking on the item in the Unity panel, they ended up displaying 2 hours later but grayed out (like it's stuck, or however Gnome determines to gray them out), so I forced them closed. [Bug 730142] Re: Directory size in properties doesn't count hidden files
Hi jahvascriptmaniac Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I can confirm that when using the package nautilus on Ubuntu 10.10 using the steps provided by jahvascriptmaniac that I can reproduce the bug. Therefore I have set this bug to confirmed. To reproduce this bug I followed the steps below: 1. Create a new folder called test in your home directory 2. Create (or copy) a file inside this folder and make it hidden. 3. Right-click on the folder and click properties 4. Note that properties window says 'Contents: nothing' 5. Press CTRL+H to show hidden files 6. Go back to properties window and note that it still says 'Contents: nothing' What I expected to happen: For the Nautilus properties window to include the size of hidden files and number of hidden files either: -All the time or -When hidden files are selected to be shown (CTRL+H) However someone will need to decide which behaviour should be the default. I personally would expect the second option to be the default and not the current behaviour. [Bug 426353] Re: wake on usb
I really don't understand why this bug is being treated as Incomplete/Expired. More information was supplied on request, and it has been confirmed to be an issue in the most recent release. Further, this is an issue of chosen defaults lack of UI. As far as I'm aware it will affect all users, so not hard to track down or requiring apport/debugging info. If it's worth anything, I can also confirm that this is an issue on 10.04 (Vaio laptop) and 10.10 (desktop). By default, USB devices do not wake from suspend/sleep. There is also no UI to adjust this. [Bug 730142] Re: Directory size in properties doesn't count hidden files
Hello, I personally would expect the second option to be the default and not the current behaviour. Actually, I think the first option (always count hidden files) should be the default. If that wasn't the case, one might have some space used by hidden files and wouldn't have even a hint that something is hidden somewhere. Also, when copying a folder, say, to a USB pen drive, those hidden files are copied, even if hidden files aren't displayed. So somebody using right- click → properties to calculate how much stuff he/she could put on the drive would be mislead. Also, it is the default in every other file manager I have ever seen (and I have used a lot, from Thunar to MSExplore), so the principle of least astonishment should apply here. What I have seen in some file managers, and IMO it's the best option, is the following display (I think this is the way Thunar does it, but I can't remember for sure) : Content : 1234 files (2Gb), including 178 hidden elements (15Mb). That way, there's no ambiguity, the user knows the exact weight of the folder, and has a hint that he/she can't se a portion of it. And it really keeps things simple (nothing is hidden to the user, no «bad surprises»). Goodbye, jahvascriptmaniac -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/730142 Title: Directory size in properties doesn't count hidden files -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 730142] Re: Directory size in properties doesn't count hidden files
Hi jahvascriptmaniac I did say that this was my personal opinion and it is up to the developers of nautilus how to fix this bug. However after seeing the solution 'Content : 1234 files (2Gb), including 178 hidden elements (15Mb).' I feel that that would be the best way to present the size. The reason that I originally felt that the size should only be shown after showing hidden items is because sometimes people will hide files for a reason so that people don't know that they are there. But when they look at the size of the folder and find that it doesn't match up with the files in it then they would then work out that there are hidden files there. Overall however I feel that the default solution should be: 'Content : 1234 files (2Gb), including 178 hidden elements (15Mb).' But as I said above it is down to the developers (or a person higher up) to decide, not me. Hope that clears up any issues.
