[Bug 774673] [NEW] Emphaty does not log in to any networks

2011-05-01 Thread Gabor Toth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Recently switched to ubuntu 11.04. i run a standard upgrade. first emphaty
was working. at startup it does not log in to any networks but it did not do
it in 10.04 either so i was used to that.
however now when i start emphaty it does not try to log in anywhere. it kind
of freezes down. not really since i can just close the window and it would
close but nothing happens. does not even try to log in anywhere. i have
logins setup for facebook, yahoo, google talk and people near by. non of these
logs in so i stay totally off line.

[Bug 774698] [NEW] Wireless card takes too long to wake up after suspend

2011-05-01 Thread ali
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-nettool

My g'friend's laptop - Toshiba Satellite R630-141 - now has Ubuntu 10.10
on it. She's happy with it but the problem is that her wireless takes
too long to spring back into life after suspend. Ok, it's not ages -
maybe just 20 secs - but it's annoying her and putting her off Ubuntu
and I've told her that I can probably find a fix. Any ideas? Thanks in
advance!

[Bug 774115] Re: no calendar or contacts with evolution-mapi

2011-05-01 Thread Zaris
Did a fresh install of Natty and things are better. So there was
something wrong with my upgraded system.

Now I can see my calendar entries.
But I do not have the GAL. In first session it tried to cache all 4 entries
and crashed. After that it tries to open and then says The Evolution address
book has died unexpectedly
Iit seems to die after variable number of contacts (35 000 - 37 000) found.

I was also now able to send mail with accented characters in recipient
name (without autocompletion from GAL, evolution dies is autocompletion
from GAL is on when sending).

[Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format

2011-05-01 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
You are assuming that they are no other patents than Google's on VP8.
This is an unproven assertion, and some experts have clearly voiced
their serious doubts.

The VideoLAN project has an informal policy of not taking software
patents into accounts when taking decision for the simple reason that:
1/ they are invalid in Europe, where the project is based, and 2/ there
is no way to determine that a certain piece of code does not infringe
any patent (you cannot come and ask the patent office for that kind of
assertion).

The VideoLAN project is a non-profit and it will not let its policy be
dictated by the FSF or Ubuntu zealots. If you have a problem with that,
you better take it up with the VideoLAN project directly than through
Launchpad.

[Bug 556670] Re: Can't click on UI elements in gimp (intermittent)

2011-05-01 Thread Vincent Lhote-Hatakeyama
I have the same problem in Gimp that the one described in comment #4: when
using the pen, one stroke out of two is not working.
But I don’t have any trouble with Inkscape.
I’ve tried recompiling gimp 2.6.11 from source without results. I also tried
2.7.2, and still had the bug.
I tried Gimp in Fedora 15 beta and didn’t add the problem so kept searching.
I tried using GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS, having add to do that for Cellwriter to work
properly but it made Gimp misbehave.
I found that using compiz either in Unity (Ubuntu at gdm login) or with gnome
(Ubuntu classic at gdm login) seem to cause the problem. When using KDE, or
Ubuntu classic without effect (no compiz), the input is working correctly. As
Fedora 15 beta uses Gnome 3 with mutter, in sound logical it would not be
affected by the problem.

[Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-05-01 Thread theclaw
I think I found the reason for the bug, however I don't have a
satisfactory solution.

It seems that when removing / renaming the file '.Xmodmap' (which is
located in the user's home directory) so that gnome doesn't find it
anymore when logging in, gnome-settings-daemon gets started correctly.
Found this out my successively removing dot-files in my home directory
until it worked (very frustrating).

However, now I don't have .Xmodmap anymore :-(

I don't have .Xmodmap here on default installation.. I think it is useful only
for mapping keyboard keys.
So I can't reproduce your workaround here.

[Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-05-01 Thread Sean Garner
As a workaround if you use .Xmodmap then I've found that renaming it and
loading it in startup applications instead works well.

mv .Xmodmap .Xmodmap_workaround
Open Startup Applications then click Add
In the command box enter xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap_workaround
Click Add then log out and in to see the effect.

When the problem is resolved don't forget to rename your Xmodmap back
and remove the entry in startup application.

[Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format

2011-05-01 Thread verb3k
So in your country, both H.264 and VP8 are on the same grounds legally.
Then why do you choose H.264 over VP8?

1-The VP8 format bitstream is final, and its patents are provided under
an open license, so there is nothing left for Google to control, apart
from developing/improving the reference implementation. Other
independent implementations for both decoding and encoding exist. They
don't relate to Google whatsoever.

2-Patent infringement claims have been there since eternity, and they're
literally nothing but FUD. Where is the patent pool that was being put
together to go after Theora?

3-Google said several times it has no intention to control the format
and, for future iterations of the format, they called anyone willing to
join them. However, why would companies and research firms submit their
patents and ideas to the WebM project when they can submit them to MPEG-
LA and collect massive royalties?

4-Lead x264 developer stated that, with enough work, VP8 can have equal
quality to H.264. And on IRC, he acutally said it that VP8 can surpass
H.264 in 8-bit given a good encoder. He is just saying that the
reference implementation sucks and is giving the format a bad name.

I would like to thank Google for their investment in cracking the MPEG-
LA audio/video monopoly and for their trials in making a better, patent-
troll-free world. Lastly, I don't actually think VLC is a recommended
way to encode video. Therefore I don't really care if H.264 continues to
be the default.

Re: [Bug 728803] Re: Ubuntu theme switches from partially broken to gnome default on VirtualBox guest

2011-05-01 Thread Tom van der Heijden
I'm also effected by this bug. Running a fresh and fully updated install
of Natty in VirtualBox.
However, the workaround as described by Zuzkins does not work for me.
Still get the broken theme after a few seconds. I also tried to increase
to sleep 5, but without effect.

Will try to do a fresh install on native hardware on short-term to see
if I get the same result.

[Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format

2011-05-01 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
AVC offers much better compatibility across encapsulation formats
(notably MPEG-TS) and playback devices than WebM currently does. The
Ubuntu community is not going to take care of the surge of support
request and bad publicity a new version of VLC gets if it breaks that
compatibility.

VP8/WebM is supported, but I do not believe it would an appropriate
default choice at this point in time.

[Bug 774876] [NEW] Open Programs Buttons in the Bottom Panel Cannot be Re-arranged

2011-05-01 Thread Peshko R.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I moved from Maverick to Natty and everything was flawless. I didn't
like Unity, so I am running Ubuntu Classic.

What I noticed is that at the bottom panel I cannot re-arrange the open
programs. For example if I have FF, TB and Text Editor open in that
order, I'd like to reorder it in the panel, so that TB is first, FF next
and Text Editor last. I was able to do that in Maverick/Lucid with no
problem.

Removing the account and recreating it does not work.

When restarting evolution without an account a setup wizard is
displayed. In this wizard text is randomly removed from the gui (labels
etc) when writing on the keyboard. Very annoying and makes it hard to
recreate an account.

[Bug 774913] [NEW] Updating Ubuntu 10.0 quit reading NTFS, boot options don't open windows

2011-05-01 Thread Jim Roper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I went into Ubuntu, asked it to update, which it did. But, when it
restarted after updating, the book option for opening windows
disappeared, leaving only the safe mode. Starting in that safe mode does
not work, and apparently the NTFS file cannot be read. I get a message

indeed, my computer let, which it doesn't. Now I can't even read that

[Bug 774795] [NEW] gnome-terminal corruption when switching workspaces

2011-05-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

My box is a Lenovo T400 (4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3400). After I upgraded from
10.10 to 11.04
via Update Manager, gnome-terminals undergo a corruption when being redrawn
under certain
cirumstances. The system is fully patched. I use Gnome 2.32.1 with Metacity.

In workspace 1 Firefox is open, in workspace 2 are several xterms (created with
gnome-terminal
--geometry=100x40). In one of these xterms vi is running. When I switch from
workspace 1
to 2 with Crt-Alt-Arrow, the content of the xterm with vi is sometimes not
redrawn correctly. In
these cases it contains the stuff of the Firefox window of this screen
position. I need to move the
faulty xtrem just by one pixel, and everything is redrawn correctly. This is
not exactly reproducible,
it simply happens from time to time. I still try to find a pattern for this
behaviour.

[Bug 774937] [NEW] I cannot read some of the text in the body of emails

2011-05-01 Thread Eric Wright
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have emails from my travel agent to detail new flights. Above each
flight section there is a date header. These headers cannot be read.
They just appear as a black band across the email. This does not happen
with kMail or Mail2web.

It happens with Evolution on all my computers. I do not enjoy having to
keep changing email readers to find the whole story.

I attach a copy of an offending email to this bug report.

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2011-05-01 Thread Andy Cooling
This seems a little crazy, my Tosh NB200 battery estimation worked fine
until an upgrade, can't remember now if it was 9.10 to 10.04 or 10.04 to
10.10. Anyway, the on screen pop-ups with the % remaining are fine, it's
just the panel monitor that doesn't display a time. I installed batmon
today as a test, it's graphically very poor, but at least it reports a
percentage, it too cannot report an estimated time. Can an option for
percentage or time be added to the indicator applet until this is
resolved?

[Bug 775019] [NEW] google contacts don't work after upgrade to 11.04

2011-05-01 Thread Zoran Mijanovic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

After upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 I face a lot of problems with evolution. Before,
with Ubuntu 10.10 it works perfectly.
The first problem: I have over 1500 contacts in google/mail, but evolution
shows only 700. Today it is worse. It shows no contacts at all.
When I open contacts with web browser in https://mail.google.com/mail/...; I
find all 1500 contacts still present.
The second problem: When I want to close evolution, it become grey and stay in
that condition infinitely so I have to kill it by system monitor.
The third problem: I can not find mail files in my home folder. Before, I had
folder .evolution with lot of folders and files. Now there is only two folders
and few very small files.
