In my case, problem went away after killing pulseaudio and restarting it. Interestingly, while gnome-volume-control showed both audio sources (digital/analog), pavucontrol only listed the HDMI one, and even though gnome-volume-control showed analog as selected, muting the visible HDMI source in

I figured out that there is an entry in /usr/share/applications but it is hidden in the start menu with the line OnlyShowIn=GNOME;. I'm using LXDE and because of this the entry is not visible. I don't know why the visibility is limited to GNOME because it can even be used in other desktop
