What I did to solve this.
I noticed Evolution could not open certain emails from AOL. When I opened AOL
it would open at a certain email. I tried to open that email and AOL notified
me that it could not, so I deleted it. Then opened Evolution and found it had
loaded more of the emails.
Same problem with an internal CD drive (from my Dell 1525 N laptop) and
Ubuntu10.10.

Fontconfig is just a mess.
It can happly pick up a preffered that misses glyphs that
document needs.
So to fix the '=' issue I removed the 'ttf-symbol-replacement' font

From your description, this bug doesn't seem like a crash to me, but perhaps I
am missing something that Sebastien Bacher properly recognized. Before we
re-subscribe him to this bug and ask, have you tried enabling Apport and
seeing if a crash reporting window comes up (or a
