[Bug 882255] Re: No administrative actions possible (password refused) after enabling passwordless login

2012-06-03 Thread Alessandro Menti
** Description changed:

If I choose not to have a password for my operating account, every
operation fails if it needs root access. Reproducible even on a newly
  set up machine. See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862543

  Release: 11.10

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 11.10 as normal. During installation, when you are asked to
choose a password, enter one, since the installation can not continue if you do
not do so.
  2. Boot the newly installed system and log in as usual.
  3. Choose System Settings from the launcher on the left and open User
Accounts.
  4. In the User Accounts window, click on Unlock at the top right of the
dialog. Enter your user password when prompted.
  5. Click on the four dots next to the Password label to change your
password.
  6. Select Log in without a password from the dropdown box. Close the window.
  7. Try to perform an action requiring administrative privileges. For example,
try running sudo apt-get update from a terminal.

  Expected behavior:
sudo should require the user's password and accept it, or proceed without
requiring any password altogether.

  Actual behavior:
sudo requires the user's password and does not accept it (since it is set to
an empty string in /etc/shadow).

  Further notes:
After disabling the password request at login, the /etc/shadow file related
to the test user account I created looked like this:
  test::15283:0:9:7:::
- This shows that the password hash is made completely empty; that conflicts
with the policies listed in /etc/sudoers, which require a password to be given
in order to
+ This shows that the password hash is made completely empty; that conflicts
with the policies listed in /etc/sudoers, which require a password to be given
in order to perform
+ administrative actions.

  Workaround:
-If you can not perform administrative actions but can still login without a
password, open a terminal and type passwd. This command should prompt you for
a new password and change it without any problems.
-If you can not login, you can reset your password by booting into recovery
mode and changing it there. Follow the instructions at
http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword.

You may also choose to use a password for your account and to enable
autologin at the same time. This choice will enable you to benefit the
advantage of not entering a password at boot time with the security of
Ubuntu requiring your password when attempting to perform privileged
actions. Of course, this helps when you are the only desktop user or the
  primary one.

[Bug 1008043] [NEW] Lowscore misrecorded as 0:00 in gnomine 3.4.1

2012-06-03 Thread Mark A Gerads
Public bug reported:

When you tie with the last lowscore, the message pops up saying you did not
make the score list.
If you press 'New Game', a new game starts, setting the time to 0:00, and the
scorelist pops up.
I do not know if you need to beat the 10th lowscore by a fragment of a second,
or just tie.

The only reason I could figure this out is because it happened twice
today. Screenshot attached.

This bug allows someone to get to the top of the list if they can just
beat the 10th lowscore and then wait to cause a tie.

[Bug 1008068] [NEW] Gnome program not running under XFCE since 12.04

2012-06-03 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

This is a renewal of bug #994240 . Since upgrade to ubuntu 12.04 one of
the gnome support functions of XFCE is broken, i.e. nautilus -n does not
work anymore.

However, bug #994240 is constantly closed by a guy named Sebastien
Bacher who ignorantly insists on that this is not a bug but the
inability to use XFCE.

On the other side, the ubuntu guys replied to the question #196103, that
this is a bug.

So I cannot open a bug report, because the launchpad people claim it is not a
bug,
and I cannot ask a question because the answer people claim that it is a bug.

After all it turns out to be rather a problem of a denial of service attack
driven by Sebastien Bacher against launchpad by closing legitimate bug reports.

How would one report this as a bug if not like this? How does Ubuntu
protect launchpad against malicious ignorants?

I stumbled over your patch by googling the maximum image dimensions error
message and I pulled it into our git:

Thanks for investigating this.

Btw, we had to integrate the transupp.{c,h} files as these routines are
not exported by libjpeg.

Still happening in an up-to-date Precise install.

I don't think this is a duplicate of #410636. Fixing that bug will act
as a workaround for this one, but it looks to me the real issue here is
the click and release event being processed as separate actions.

[Bug 1008117] [NEW] Nautilus suggests option for mounting hibernated ntfs partitions that could lead to data loss

2012-06-03 Thread adempewolff
Public bug reported:

--- What happens: ---
If a user tries to open an ntfs partition that has been hibernated while using
Nautilus they will be presented with this dialog:
--
Unable to mount XP

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 14: Windows is hibernated, refused
to mount.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda3': Operation not permitted
The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown Windows
properly, or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option, or
mount the volume read-write with the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option.
For example type on the command line:

mount -t ntfs-3g -o remove_hiberfile /dev/sda3 /media/XP_
---

The last suggestion, mount the volume read-write with the
'remove_hiberfile' mount option, is problematic because doing this
would delete the 'hiberfile.sys' file and cause the user to lose all
information on the saved session--potentially including unsaved work.
Here is a selection from the ntfs-3g manpage explaining this option:

remove_hiberfile
Unlike in case of read-only mount, the read-write mount is
denied if the NTFS volume is hibernated. One needs either to
resume Windows and shutdown it properly, or use this option
which will remove the Windows hibernation file. Please note,
this means that the saved Windows session will be completely
lost. Use this option under your own responsibility.

The fact that the exact command to do this is prominently displayed (and
is the only command displayed) without any warning that this will delete
the saved Windows session only aggravates the risk of data loss.

--- What should happen: ---

1. If a command is to be prominently displayed it should be the command
to mount the partition in read-only mode (see command below)--this is
the only completely safe way to mount a hibernated ntfs-partition
without risking data loss.

  mount -t ntfs-3g -o ro /dev/sda3 /media/XP_

2. A warning should be included in the Nautilus dialog which explains
that using the 'remove_hiberfile' option to mount the drive in read-
write mode will require deleting the saved Windows session and losing

[Bug 537970]

2012-06-03 Thread W-mjordan
Created attachment 62423
Preview of Abschlussarbeit.pdf as intended to print

OK, just so people don't vote the document is broken I attached
Abschlussarbeit.png, which shows how the document is supposed to print.
What does in fact not print, though, is the PNG logo in the lower right
corner. The text is kept to a minimum to make debugging easier.

And, seriously, if you take a look at the experiments I performed to
narrow down the problem (comment #2 above), how can you think I post a
bug for an obviously broken document? We've been having that problem for
months at work with just about every document we try to print -
generated by LaTeX, OOo, LibreOffice, you name it. There is always some
image that does not print. And I tried to view and print the document
with Adobe Reader, too, and if I write Adobe Reader prints correctly,
you can take my word for it.

If anybody can get me started on building the project, I'm glad to help.

[Bug 537970]

2012-06-03 Thread James H. Cloos Jr.
The renderings I get from evince (master, with poppler master and
cairo master), ghostscript (9.05 and master) and mupdf (master) all
match the png you posted as attachment #62423.

I looked at the document after running it though:

  :; mupdfclean -d -a Abschlussarbeit.pdf Abschlussarbeit.pdfc

to make it readable. The only odd thing I found was that the ink was
set (via 0 g 0 G) multiple times in a row. That is redunant – even
redundantly redundant ☺ – but shouldn’t cause any harm.

Oddly, gs 9.05’s psdrgb device was unable to render the file; every
other output device I tried with gs 9.05 worked fine.

In any case, poppler master with cairo master renders correctly.

pdftotext -htmlmeta output is missing metadata from PDF catalog. pdfinfo

e.g. a pdfinfo output:

[Bug 875878] Re: Easymp3gain Hangs when clicking Add File or Add Folder

2012-06-03 Thread Mossroy
On my computer, the debian package works, but not the quantal one. The
sourceforge package crashes as in comment #13
Testing both on Precise amd64, with all current updates.

It's a good thing that it's fixed in Quantal, but could something be done for
Precise LTS?
I understand that backporting the fix on gtk can be too complicated/risky. But
there seems to be a way to make it work as the debian package works?

In any case, this application is currently unusable on Precise : its
purpose is to modify audio files but you can't select them...

[Bug 1008226] [NEW] screen is unlocked for several seconds after wakeup from suspend

2012-06-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug:

My laptop is configured to require my user password after waking up from
suspend (or of course, after locking).

Expected behavior:
I close my laptop screen, initiating a suspend. Later, I open the laptop and am
required to enter a password before I can interact with my session.

Actual behavior
I close my laptop screen, initiating a suspend. Later, I open the laptop and am
shown my session unlocked. There is a short pause of several seconds (the
duration differs) where whatever screen I was previously on is visible, and can
be interacted with.

If I was viewing a sensitive document, someone could take a picture of
my screen before the lock kicked in. Also, if someone had a quick
reaction time, or if the screen lock took an abnormally long amount of
time to kick in (it is usually 2-3 seconds), they could disable the
screen lock or perform some undesirable action with my user permissions.

[Bug 1007628] Re: Windows ist nicht eingehängt

2012-06-03 Thread Evan Peck
Vielen Dank! Ich für mein schlechtes Deutsch
entschuldigen.

[Bug 941463] Re: No way to set empathy to automatically start on login

2012-06-03 Thread GuiMaster
I just wanted to complement Ken VanDine on his great suggestion! Adding
some common applications to the Startup Applications Preferences menu,
is an excellent way to make things easy for new users. The option to
Auto-Start those applications can be disabled by default, but as long as
it is easily accessible for a newbie user to enable, this problem is
solved.

I noticed that the panel application Weather Indicator automatically
inserts itself into the Startup Applications Preferences menu during
installation, and hopefully in the future more and more applications
will do the same.

[Bug 537970] Re: Evince does not print images in some pdf files.

2012-06-03 Thread Matthias Jordan
This leaves me wondering why the heck the document renders correctly on
screen but Evince is not able to print it. I'm not really sure if I made
myself clear here: The document (and every other document that has this
problem) can be read correctly on screen with all images, but printing
it results in missing images (e.g. the blue logo in
Abschlussarbeit.pdf). This is exactly as the original bug description
states.

[Bug 1008268] [NEW] Custom keyboard shortcuts stop working after reboot

2012-06-03 Thread Luke Feetham
Public bug reported:

I have set 10 custom keyboard shortcuts as Alt+num to increase the
volume above 100% using the command (e.g. for Alt+9) pacmd set-sink-
volume 0 10, which all work as expected. However, once I re-start
my computer they no longer work. The custom shortcuts are all still
present in the KeyboardShortcutsCustom shortcuts section, but pressing
any of the key combinations has no effect. The expected functionality of
the key combinations can only be restored by

1. Assigning a different shortcut key combination, and
2. Changing this back to the key combination that I want.

But this will stop working again after I restart my machine.

My graphics card is GeForce GTX 560M, and I am using the proprietary

The calculator is the only program in which I am experiencing screen refresh

If it's at all relevant, I'm using GNOME Classic with Compiz.

Ioannis,

As mentioned above, this bug is a duplicate of Bug #973014 (I found out
about it after I reported this bug), see comment 22 on that bug for a
temporary workaround (basically renaming the file /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
