[Bug 882255] Re: No administrative actions possible (password refused) after enabling passwordless login
** Description changed: If I choose not to have a password for my operating account, every operation fails if it needs root access. Reproducible even on a newly set up machine. See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862543 Release: 11.10 Steps to reproduce: 1. Install Ubuntu 11.10 as normal. During installation, when you are asked to choose a password, enter one, since the installation can not continue if you do not do so. 2. Boot the newly installed system and log in as usual. 3. Choose System Settings from the launcher on the left and open User Accounts. 4. In the User Accounts window, click on Unlock at the top right of the dialog. Enter your user password when prompted. 5. Click on the four dots next to the Password label to change your password. 6. Select Log in without a password from the dropdown box. Close the window. 7. Try to perform an action requiring administrative privileges. For example, try running sudo apt-get update from a terminal. Expected behavior: sudo should require the user's password and accept it, or proceed without requiring any password altogether. Actual behavior: sudo requires the user's password and does not accept it (since it is set to an empty string in /etc/shadow). Further notes: After disabling the password request at login, the /etc/shadow file related to the test user account I created looked like this: test::15283:0:9:7::: - This shows that the password hash is made completely empty; that conflicts with the policies listed in /etc/sudoers, which require a password to be given in order to + This shows that the password hash is made completely empty; that conflicts with the policies listed in /etc/sudoers, which require a password to be given in order to perform + administrative actions. Workaround: -If you can not perform administrative actions but can still login without a password, open a terminal and type passwd. This command should prompt you for a new password and change it without any problems. -If you can not login, you can reset your password by booting into recovery mode and changing it there. Follow the instructions at http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword. You may also choose to use a password for your account and to enable autologin at the same time. This choice will enable you to benefit the advantage of not entering a password at boot time with the security of Ubuntu requiring your password when attempting to perform privileged actions. Of course, this helps when you are the only desktop user or the primary one. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882255 Title: No administrative actions possible (password refused) after enabling passwordless login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/882255/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1008043] [NEW] Lowscore misrecorded as 0:00 in gnomine 3.4.1
Public bug reported: When you tie with the last lowscore, the message pops up saying you did not make the score list. If you press 'New Game', a new game starts, setting the time to 0:00, and the scorelist pops up. I do not know if you need to beat the 10th lowscore by a fragment of a second, or just tie. The only reason I could figure this out is because it happened twice today. Screenshot attached. [Bug 1008068] [NEW] Gnome program not running under XFCE since 12.04
Public bug reported: This is a renewal of bug #994240 . Since upgrade to ubuntu 12.04 one of the gnome support functions of XFCE is broken, i.e. nautilus -n does not work anymore. However, bug #994240 is constantly closed by a guy named Sebastien Bacher who ignorantly insists on that this is not a bug but the inability to use XFCE. On the other side, the ubuntu guys replied to the question #196103, that this is a bug. So I cannot open a bug report, because the launchpad people claim it is not a bug, and I cannot ask a question because the answer people claim that it is a bug. After all it turns out to be rather a problem of a denial of service attack driven by Sebastien Bacher against launchpad by closing legitimate bug reports. How would one report this as a bug if not like this? [Bug 1008117] [NEW] Nautilus suggests option for mounting hibernated ntfs partitions that could lead to data loss
Public bug reported: --- What happens: --- If a user tries to open an ntfs partition that has been hibernated while using Nautilus they will be presented with this dialog: -- Unable to mount XP Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 14: Windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda3': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is hibernated. For example type on the command line: mount -t ntfs-3g -o remove_hiberfile /dev/sda3 /media/XP_ --- The last suggestion, mount the volume read-write with the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option, is problematic because doing this would delete the 'hiberfile.sys' file and cause the user to lose all information on the saved session--potentially including unsaved work. Here is a selection from the ntfs-3g manpage explaining this option: remove_hiberfile Unlike in case of read-only mount, the read-write mount is denied if the NTFS volume is hibernated. One needs either to resume Windows and shutdown it properly, or use this option which will remove the Windows hibernation file. Please note, this means that the saved Windows session will be completely lost. Use this option under your own responsibility. The fact that the exact command to do this is prominently displayed (and is the only command displayed) without any warning that this will delete the saved Windows session only aggravates the risk of data loss. --- What should happen: --- 1. If a command is to be prominently displayed it should be the command to mount the partition in read-only mode (see command below)--this is the only completely safe way to mount a hibernated ntfs-partition without risking data loss. mount -t ntfs-3g -o ro /dev/sda3 /media/XP_ 2. Created attachment 62423 Preview of Abschlussarbeit.pdf as intended to print OK, just so people don't vote the document is broken I attached Abschlussarbeit.png, which shows how the document is supposed to print. What does in fact not print, though, is the PNG logo in the lower right corner. The text is kept to a minimum to make debugging easier. We've been having that problem for months at work with just about every document we try to print - generated by LaTeX, OOo, LibreOffice, you name it. There is always some image that does not print. The renderings I get from evince (master, with poppler master and cairo master), ghostscript (9.05 and master) and mupdf (master) all match the png you posted as attachment #62423. I looked at the document after running it though: :; mupdfclean -d -a Abschlussarbeit.pdf Abschlussarbeit.pdfc to make it readable. The only odd thing I found was that the ink was set (via 0 g 0 G) multiple times in a row. That is redunant – even redundantly redundant ☺ – but shouldn’t cause any harm. [Bug 1008226] [NEW] screen is unlocked for several seconds after wakeup from suspend
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** You have been subscribed to a public security bug: My laptop is configured to require my user password after waking up from suspend (or of course, after locking). Expected behavior: I close my laptop screen, initiating a suspend. Later, I open the laptop and am required to enter a password before I can interact with my session. Actual behavior I close my laptop screen, initiating a suspend. Later, I open the laptop and am shown my session unlocked. There is a short pause of several seconds (the duration differs) where whatever screen I was previously on is visible, and can be interacted with. If I was viewing a sensitive document, someone could take a picture of my screen before the lock kicked in. [Bug 941463] Re: No way to set empathy to automatically start on login
I just wanted to complement Ken VanDine on his great suggestion! Adding some common applications to the Startup Applications Preferences menu, is an excellent way to make things easy for new users. The option to Auto-Start those applications can be disabled by default, but as long as it is easily accessible for a newbie user to enable, this problem is solved.
