[Bug 1621282] [NEW] dconf-editor shouldn't be in Sundry
Public bug reported: In Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 Beta by default, there is one item in the Sundry folder in the Activities Overview: dconf-editor. It should be moved to Utilities instead. Unlike some of the other stuff in Sundry, it's not a legacy app. I tried working on this bug by patching gnome-menus but it's not working in GNOME. I also saw that Debian patches gnome-menus to keep alacarte out of Sundry but in Debian testing, alacarte is in Sundry so something isn't working right at all. Personally, "Sundry" never did make much sense and I don't believe it was ever defined. The category hasn't been updated in years. I think we should remove the Sundry category. ** Affects: ubuntu-gnome Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnome-menus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: In Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 Beta by default, there is one item in the Sundry folder in the Activities Overview: dconf-editor. [Bug 1621176] [NEW] zeitgeist gedit plugin not enabled by default
Public bug reported: This is similar to totem bug 1621162 except that gedit doesn't have "builtin" plugins. ubuntu-settings has this override: [org.gnome.gedit.plugins] active-plugins = ['docinfo', 'modelines', 'filebrowser', 'spell', 'time', 'zeitgeistplugin'] This would work except that the zeitgeist plugin is not installed by default (it's bundled with gedit-plugins which is in universe). The first time gedit is run, it removes 'zeitgeistplugin' from 'active- plugins' because it can't find the plugin. This means that if a user later installs gedit-plugins, the zeitgiest plugin still won't be enabled. Proposed fixes: 1. Have gedit recommend gedit-plugins. Or… 2. Split the zeitgeist plugin to its own binary package, promote that to main, and have gedit recommend it. Or… 3. Drop the override since it's not working anyway (the other plugins in that list are already set in the upstream schema). Or… 4. Work with upstream for a better way for certain plugins to be enabled by default. For now, I'm going to go with #3 because it's easiest. ** Affects: gedit-plugins (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: ubuntu-settings (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: ubuntu-settings (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gedit-plugins in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1621176 Title: zeitgeist gedit plugin not enabled by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit-plugins/+bug/1621176/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1621162] [NEW] zeitgeist totem plugin not enabled by default
Public bug reported: The zeitgeist totem plugin is not enabled by default. The intent is for it to be enabled, see near the bottom of: https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+junk/ubuntu- settings/view/head:/debian/ubuntu-settings.gsettings-override - I think that's because the override should be org.gnome.totem instead of org.gnome.Totem - My understanding is that when totem starts, it loads all the plugin listed in gsettings' "enabled-plugins" and loads all plugins that have Builtin=true. It then writes the combined list to "enabled-plugins". - Every other plugin in the gsettings override is Builtin, so the only purpose for that line is to try to activate zeitgeist by default. But this method doesn't work for upgraders since the list of plugins is already "user-configured" by totem when it runs. - Builtin plugins are not show in Preferences>Plugins. They cannot be disabled by the user (without editing system files). I propose that we set the Zeitgeist plugin to Builtin=true. If someone wants to configure Zeitgeist, they should use System Settings>Security & Privacy in Unity or install and run activity-log-manager in other desktops. If people complain (or if this is a problem), we could split the Zeitgeist plugin to another package. [Bug 1618370] Re: nautilus does not show external drives in sidebar if plugged in on reboot
The patch for that commit works without any changes with the current gvfs in yakkety (1.28.2). With the patch applied I see the is_removable variable using the gvfs-mount -li command, eg: Drive(0): WDC WD40EZRX-00SPEB0 Type: GProxyDrive (GProxyVolumeMonitorUDisks2) ids: unix-device: '/dev/sda' themed icons: [drive-harddisk-usb] [drive-harddisk] [drive] symbolic themed icons: [drive-harddisk-usb-symbolic] [drive-harddisk-symbolic] [drive-symbolic] [drive-harddisk-usb] [drive-harddisk] [drive] is_removable=0 is_media_removable=0 has_media=1 Unfortunately that variable is set to zero for all my drives, irrespective of whether they are external or are plugged in at reboot, so now I don't see anything appear in the sidebar, not even the SD card. (Actually, I see something appear briefly when I insert the card and then it disappears.) Upstream, they think that is_removable is just a copy of /sys/block//removable, and for me that is set to zero for USB and SD devices (but not for CDs). For instance, with kernel 4.6.0-10, for a USB device /dev/sdb: $ readlink -f /sys/block/sdb/device /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:0c.0/usb2/2-1/2-1:1.0/host3/target3:0:0/3:0:0:0 $ cat /sys/block/sdb/removable 0 I wonder if that variable is supposed to represent removable media as opposed to a removable drive? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1618370 Title: nautilus does not show external drives in sidebar if plugged in on reboot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/1618370/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1565780] Re: Xenial flashback session lacks access to nautilus preferences menu
I think we have a much deeper problem here: Some apps (nautlilus, control panel, gitg, ) are using new features (like the launcher icon context menu, mabye first provided by Unity, borderless windows etc.) and do not provide a reliable fallback for old desktops. So if the new features prove useful, the old desktops should retrofit them somehow (eg. making for example gnome-fallback handle external application menus like the Unity launcher icon menus) or the libs used to access these features should provide an internal fallback mechanism. A borderless window should never be shown without resize handles if it would have some in Unity. It is bad to load up the developers of apps with the handling of this new features, as many of them would fall to "new style" promises and would produce Unity-only apps this way. I am very pissed of by these shortsigthed developments, that lead to Ubuntu being an almost Unity-only system as of 16.04 now, with myriads of problems in any desktop other then Unity. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1565780 Title: Xenial flashback session lacks access to nautilus preferences menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1565780/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1621002] Re: Mediascanner2 test failure on yakkety/{armhf, arm64, ppc64el} with latest dbus-cpp
Good catch! I've seen this in the past due to uninitialised variables. With optimisation, the compiler gets more aggressive about register re-use, so a bug can manifest under optimisation when the uninitialised variable ends up in a register that had a previous value in it. (In debug mode, the variable often picks up a zero value instead.) Linux Mint 17.3 XFCE, Evolution 3.10.4 Comment #7 above points to a workaround that actually works. SyncEvolution. [Bug 1621002] Re: Mediascanner2 test failure on yakkety/{armhf, arm64, ppc64el} with latest dbus-cpp
This is looking like a case of the code being miscompiled under optimisation. To reproduce, build mediascanner2 using the "RelWithDebInfo" build type and then run: ./test/test_dbus --gtest_filter=*filter_codec The test program segfaults when calling Variant::as() on a variant that should have been initialised by reading out of a Message::Reader. [Bug 1621002] [NEW] Mediascanner2 test failure on yakkety/{armhf, arm64, ppc64el} with latest dbus-cpp
Public bug reported: When trying to build a new mediascanner2 release, tests failed on a number of architectures when building under Yakkety. Some relevant logs: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/281862518/buildlog_ubuntu-yakkety-armhf.mediascanner2_0.112+16.10.20160831-0ubuntu1_BUILDING.txt.gz https://launchpadlibrarian.net/282074929/buildlog_ubuntu-yakkety-arm64.mediascanner2_0.112+16.10.20160831-0ubuntu1_BUILDING.txt.gz https://launchpadlibrarian.net/281862178/buildlog_ubuntu-yakkety-ppc64el.mediascanner2_0.112+16.10.20160831-0ubuntu1_BUILDING.txt.gz The failure is occurring in code not touched by the changes in the silo, and I suspect that this is related to dbus-cpp or possibly GCC 6. The segfault doesn't occur on x86, but I was able to reproduce it on my Chromebook.
