[Bug 1619867] Re: Changes to Startup Application Preferences not being remembered in Ubuntu Unity 16.04

Not sure why that would make a difference.

Are you really saying that the file bash.desktop, which you now have
shown is created as expected via the GUI, is removed if you reboot?

[Bug 1621282] [NEW] dconf-editor shouldn't be in Sundry

2016-09-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 Beta by default, there is one item in the Sundry
folder in the Activities Overview: dconf-editor. It should be moved to
Utilities instead. Unlike some of the other stuff in Sundry, it's not a
legacy app.

I tried working on this bug by patching gnome-menus but it's not working
in GNOME.

I also saw that Debian patches gnome-menus to keep alacarte out of
Sundry but in Debian testing, alacarte is in Sundry so something isn't
working right at all.

Personally, "Sundry" never did make much sense and I don't believe it
was ever defined. The category hasn't been updated in years. I think we
should remove the Sundry category.

[Bug 1620806] Re: gedit edit window is transparent when using Ambiance and Radiance themes

2016-09-07 Thread Paul White
** Description changed:

In a freshly booted and fully updated Ubuntu 16.10 the edit window of
gedit is transparent using the *Classic* colour scheme. Other colour
schemes seem to work as intended.

- The text of loaded files shows against the desktop wallpaper.
+ The text of loaded files shows against the desktop wallpaper but when no
+ files are loaded gedit displays its edit window or pane as it should do.
+
+ To clarify this bug is only apparent when a file is loaded.

files. I haven't found any other application affected by this problem.

I used the search tool but it doesn't told me that there was another
post.

You can close this bug if you want. I'll read if that's going to be
fixed and if not I'll come back to the LTS version.

Thanks anyway

  * debian/ubuntu-settings.override:
- Skip "Let's Go Shopping" pop-up on first run of Software app.
This change was accidentally dropped in 16.10.1
- Drop totem override that doesn't work (LP: #1621162)
- Drop gedit override since the zeitgeist plugin isn't installed

[Bug 1621203] [NEW] evolution crashes when run in vnc session

2016-09-07 Thread Christopher Weber
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu
   Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
   Release: 16.04

2) The version of the package I am using:
   evolution 3.18.5.2-0ubuntu3
   vnc4server 4.1.1+xorg4.3.0-37.3ubuntu2
   xfwm4 4.12.3-1ubuntu2
   fluxbox 1.3.5-2

3) What I expect to happen:
evolution runs so I can access mail/calendar.

4) What happened:
   I'm running vnc4server with xfce4 as the window manager/desktop.
When I attempt to start evolution the following happens.

   [cweber@usacwebera ~]: evolution

   (evolution:22961): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'evolution' received an X
Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
 (Details: serial 95 error_code 1 request_code 149 (RANDR) minor_code 8)
 (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
   Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

This happened using fluxbox too, but does not happen if I'm at the local
dexktop using
either xfce4 or fluxbox. Nor does it happen in an ssh session using X
Tunneling.

Only when in a vnc4 session.

[Bug 1621176] [NEW] zeitgeist gedit plugin not enabled by default

2016-09-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

This is similar to totem bug 1621162 except that gedit doesn't have
"builtin" plugins.

ubuntu-settings has this override:
[org.gnome.gedit.plugins]
active-plugins = ['docinfo', 'modelines', 'filebrowser', 'spell', 'time',
'zeitgeistplugin']

This would work except that the zeitgeist plugin is not installed by
default (it's bundled with gedit-plugins which is in universe). The
first time gedit is run, it removes 'zeitgeistplugin' from 'active-
plugins' because it can't find the plugin. This means that if a user
later installs gedit-plugins, the zeitgiest plugin still won't be
enabled.

Proposed fixes:
1. Have gedit recommend gedit-plugins. Or…
2. Split the zeitgeist plugin to its own binary package, promote that to main,
and have gedit recommend it. Or…
3. Drop the override since it's not working anyway (the other plugins in that
list are already set in the upstream schema). Or…
4. Work with upstream for a better way for certain plugins to be enabled by
default.

For now, I'm going to go with #3 because it's easiest.

[Bug 1621162] [NEW] zeitgeist totem plugin not enabled by default

2016-09-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

The zeitgeist totem plugin is not enabled by default. The intent is for
it to be enabled, see near the bottom of:

https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+junk/ubuntu-
settings/view/head:/debian/ubuntu-settings.gsettings-override

- I think that's because the override should be org.gnome.totem instead of
org.gnome.Totem
- My understanding is that when totem starts, it loads all the plugin listed in
gsettings' "enabled-plugins" and loads all plugins that have Builtin=true. It
then writes the combined list to "enabled-plugins".
- Every other plugin in the gsettings override is Builtin, so the only purpose
for that line is to try to activate zeitgeist by default. But this method
doesn't work for upgraders since the list of plugins is already
"user-configured" by totem when it runs.
- Builtin plugins are not show in Preferences>Plugins. They cannot be disabled
by the user (without editing system files).

I propose that we set the Zeitgeist plugin to Builtin=true. If someone
wants to configure Zeitgeist, they should use System Settings>Security &
Privacy in Unity or install and run activity-log-manager in other
desktops.

If people complain (or if this is a problem), we could split the
Zeitgeist plugin to another package.

[Bug 1621157] [NEW] No window handles on non-Unity desktops

2016-09-07 Thread dronus

When using gedit in Ubuntu 16.04 on other desktop environments (eg.

For example, if gedit window is maximized, there is no header and no

[Bug 1618370] Re: nautilus does not show external drives in sidebar if plugged in on reboot

2016-09-07 Thread Rocko
The patch for that commit works without any changes with the current
gvfs in yakkety (1.28.2). With the patch applied I see the is_removable
variable using the gvfs-mount -li command, eg:

Drive(0): WDC WD40EZRX-00SPEB0
  Type: GProxyDrive (GProxyVolumeMonitorUDisks2)
  ids:
   unix-device: '/dev/sda'
  themed icons: [drive-harddisk-usb] [drive-harddisk] [drive]
  symbolic themed icons: [drive-harddisk-usb-symbolic]
[drive-harddisk-symbolic] [drive-symbolic] [drive-harddisk-usb]
[drive-harddisk] [drive]
  is_removable=0
  is_media_removable=0
  has_media=1

Unfortunately that variable is set to zero for all my drives,
irrespective of whether they are external or are plugged in at reboot,
so now I don't see anything appear in the sidebar, not even the SD card.
(Actually, I see something appear briefly when I insert the card and
then it disappears.)

Upstream, they think that is_removable is just a copy of
/sys/block//removable, and for me that is set to zero for USB
and SD devices (but not for CDs). For instance, with kernel 4.6.0-10,
for a USB device /dev/sdb:

$ readlink -f /sys/block/sdb/device
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:0c.0/usb2/2-1/2-1:1.0/host3/target3:0:0/3:0:0:0

$ cat /sys/block/sdb/removable
0

I wonder if that variable is supposed to represent removable media as
opposed to a removable drive?

[Bug 1278437] Re: can't move link type .desktop files around on desktop

2016-09-07 Thread Greg Malone
Affirming that I can reproduce the "can't drag a link icon around on the
desktop" issue on 16.04

When reporting it separately was referred to this thread by sysop.
Looks like this issue's been around a long while.

Like has been said, doesn't prevent core functionality of Ubuntu or
Nautilus, but is a rather up-front issue -- because it's a basic desktop
action -- that causes consternation at times.

Still, I really appreciate Unity desktop.

[Bug 1565780] Re: Xenial flashback session lacks access to nautilus preferences menu

2016-09-07 Thread dronus
I think we have a much deeper problem here: Some apps (nautlilus,
control panel, gitg, ) are using new features (like the launcher
icon context menu, mabye first provided by Unity, borderless windows
etc.) and do not provide a reliable fallback for old desktops.

So if the new features prove useful, the old desktops should retrofit
them somehow (eg. making for example gnome-fallback handle external
application menus like the Unity launcher icon menus) or the libs used
to access these features should provide an internal fallback mechanism.
A borderless window should never be shown without resize handles if it
would have some in Unity.

It is bad to load up the developers of apps with the handling of this
new features, as many of them would fall to "new style" promises and
would produce Unity-only apps this way.

I am very pissed of by these shortsigthed developments, that lead to
Ubuntu being an almost Unity-only system as of 16.04 now, with myriads
of problems in any desktop other then Unity.

[Bug 1599930] Re: libqt4-core dependents does not install

2016-09-07 Thread Antonio J. de Oliveira
No system bug. Just wrong packaging after substantial system changes on
an LTS. It works. Blame it on Zetes...

Check this:

http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/ccid.php

Or in PT

http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/pt/software/ccid.php

It is working on my system, after a lot of hours of trial and error...

Please confirm

Greetings

Antonio

[Bug 1620806] Re: gedit edit window is transparent when using Ambiance and Radiance themes

2016-09-07 Thread dino99
Well, quite old and probably explain such trouble:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/light-themes
Adwaita is the ubuntu default since a while.

Recent naming is 'ubuntu-themes' which provide 'light-themes' and others
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-themes/16.10+16.10.20160829.3-0ubuntu1

So better report against 'ubuntu-themes' nowadays

[Bug 1621002] Re: Mediascanner2 test failure on yakkety/{armhf, arm64, ppc64el} with latest dbus-cpp

2016-09-07 Thread Michi Henning
Good catch!

I've seen this in the past due to uninitialised variables. With
optimisation, the compiler gets more aggressive about register re-use,
so a bug can manifest under optimisation when the uninitialised variable
ends up in a register that had a previous value in it. (In debug mode,
the variable often picks up a zero value instead.)

Not sure if there is an easy way to track down whether this is the case
or if this is a genuine code generation problem.

[Bug 1459235] Re: Google Address book: Unable to open address book

2016-09-07 Thread shelleyfrank
Linux Mint 17.3 XFCE, Evolution 3.10.4
Comment #7 above points to a workaround that actually works. SyncEvolution.

I am syncing my local address book in Evolution using syncevolution mentioned
in post #7 above.
I followed the instructions given on the page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SyncEvolution/synchronize-google-contacts-with-evolution-addressbooks
to set up syncevolution. There they mention a file,
/usr/share/accounts/services/google-contacts.service that needs to be edited
before syncevolution can be set up. I discovered that this file doesn't exist
on my system! I found the file here:
https://apt-browse.org/browse/ubuntu/trusty/main/i386/evolution-data-server-online-accounts/3.10.4-0ubuntu1/file/usr/share/accounts/services/google-contacts.service
and I created it in my /usr/share/accounts/services/ folder, added the missing
line, and started setting up syncevolution.

What it does is syncing the Evolution address book under "On This
Computer" and not the "@gmail.com" Contacts. However, the result
is identical and acceptable.

[Bug 1621002] Re: Mediascanner2 test failure on yakkety/{armhf, arm64, ppc64el} with latest dbus-cpp

2016-09-07 Thread James Henstridge
This is looking like a case of the code being miscompiled under
optimisation. To reproduce, build mediascanner2 using the
"RelWithDebInfo" build type and then run:

./test/test_dbus --gtest_filter=*filter_codec

The test program segfaults when calling Variant::as() on a
variant that should have been initialised by reading out of a
Message::Reader.

When compiling with the "Debug" build type, the test program completes
without error.

I can probably solve the immediate problem in mediascanner2 by disabling
optimisation for the affected file.

[Bug 1620806] Re: gedit edit window is transparent

2016-09-07 Thread Paul White
Interesting dino99!

I always use the default (Ambiance) theme. Changing to Radiance makes no
difference. But changing to Adwaita restores the white background of
gedit's edit window. Changing back to Ambiance or Radiance gives me the
transparent window.

Is this a bug in light-themes or a rogue user setting as logging in as
another user and the Guest session both show gedit to be working
properly.

2016-09-07 Thread Paul White
Just to clarify I am *not* running Xubuntu.

This install may well have started out as Xubuntu but it was
successfully converted to Ubuntu during the Xenial cycle. gedit worked
perfectly both before and after upgrading to *Ubuntu* Yakkety.

I noticed this problem yesterday so possibly caused by a conflict with a
recently upgraded package?

[Bug 1621002] [NEW] Mediascanner2 test failure on yakkety/{armhf, arm64, ppc64el} with latest dbus-cpp

2016-09-07 Thread James Henstridge
Public bug reported:

When trying to build a new mediascanner2 release, tests failed on a
number of architectures when building under Yakkety. Some relevant
logs:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/281862518/buildlog_ubuntu-yakkety-armhf.mediascanner2_0.112+16.10.20160831-0ubuntu1_BUILDING.txt.gz
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/282074929/buildlog_ubuntu-yakkety-arm64.mediascanner2_0.112+16.10.20160831-0ubuntu1_BUILDING.txt.gz

The failure is occurring in code not touched by the changes in the silo,
and I suspect that this is related to dbus-cpp or possibly GCC 6.

The segfault doesn't occur on x86, but I was able to reproduce it on my
Chromebook. Attached is a stacktrace from the test_dbus test program.

[Bug 1620740] [NEW] Dragging web link icon on desktop fails w "Error while copying..."

2016-09-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I attempt to move a desktop icon that is a browser shortcut
(Chrome) to another location on the desktop, it fails with this error:

"Error while copying.
The file "files" cannot be handled because you do not have permissions to read
it."

Dragging regular app icons on the desktop does not have this problem.

Here is the content of an example web link icon that has the problem:

[code]
~/Desktop$ cat OwnCloud\ Web.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Link to Files - ownCloud
Type=Link
URL=https://sharpestcrayon.com/owncloud/index.php/apps/files/?dir=/=4
Icon=/home/greg/Pictures/owncloud-square-logo.png
Name[en_US]=OwnCloud Web
[/code]

System:

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

google-chrome-stable:
  Installed: 53.0.2785.89-1
  Candidate: 53.0.2785.89-1
  Version table:
 *** 53.0.2785.89-1 100

Other Places doesn't work at all anymore - clicking on it does nothing.
Should I report this as another bug, or is it a known issue?
