[Bug 1716579] [NEW] gnome-software uses a very high cpu amount

2017-09-11 Thread fcole90
Public bug reported:

The room was silent, when the fan of my laptop suddenly started making
noise. I checked it and it was because of the intense amount of CPU in
use because of gnome software.

Gnome Software CPU use was over 60%.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2017-09-11 Thread bjv
Suffering badly on 16.04 LTS, every time I need to move >100MB or so
from SSD to USB2 external drives. Transfer of large files seems to
block/cause Nautilus & "File Operations" dialogue to become choppy/hang.

[Bug 1716432] Re: With dash to dock enabled, title in window is not centred aligned to clock when the window is maximised

2017-09-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed... but maybe not a bug?

It's a good thing that the window title is always centred. In fact it
might look weird at lower resolutions if that wasn't true. The user
would notice the lack of symmetry.

I think the real bug here is that intelli-hide is not enabled, IMHO :)

There's some discussion upstream too at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=787240 - but note that it's a
confused bug report that starts out being about a different bug, which
is reported in Launchpad as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-shell/+bug/1714330 . I will file a new upstream bug for the
_console_boxed_value_set_x crash.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 1716503] [NEW] gnome-shell --wayland works only when --mode=initial-setup

2017-09-11 Thread marco ghidinelli
Public bug reported:

Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.25.91-0ubuntu4

marcogh@fate:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch)
Release:17.10

Since a couple of version of gnome-shell, --wayland doesn't work anymore.

When launching from console with:

  gnome-shell --wayland --display-server --mode=classic

the screen remains black, the cursor appears in the middle, and nothing
else.

killing gnome-shell from remote ssh brings the console back, with no
error.

Curiously, it works (and it's wayland) when i add

  --mode=initial-setup

The Xorg version works fine.

[Bug 1716456] [NEW] crash on click Activities when app is running

2017-09-11 Thread Edson T. Marques
Public bug reported:

I believe this bug is related to the video driver but I'm not sure ...
Anyway there goes the report:

This is a crash that happens every time I open two different
applications (for example: Chromium and Nautilus), one of them in
workspace 1 and the other in workspace 2.

When I change the focus between them for some time (from 3 to 5 times),
there is a crash that causes, first, the window manager (or gnome shell,
I'm not sure) to reboot, then, if I insist on trying to switch between
the applications for some more times, the crash seems to be more severe
and ubuntu returns to the login screen (gdm3).

I'm using a dell inspiron 15 series 7000 (gaming), notebook with 2
displays (one is the display of the notebook itself and the other is an
LG 23EA53, connected via HDMI and configured as a primary)

To make the focus change I use the mouse, I click on "Activities" and,
with the mouse, I click on the application that appears in the
workspaces pile to the right of the display, below and above,
successively until the crach occurs.

Using Alt-TAB it seems at first that the crash does not occur ... or it
takes longer to occur :-)

This crash occurs when both applications are in the same workspace as
well ... And if one of the applications is a virtual machine session of
Virtualbox, crash occurs more quickly (with less focus shifts).

[Bug 1631750] Re: Language installation doesn't work in Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 Settings app

2017-09-11 Thread Jeremie Tamburini
I found the same problem with the language setup on Ubuntu 17.10.
This could be related to the new Gnome Settings (just let me know if you think
I should open a new bug report).

I was running Ubuntu 17.10 in Italian language, previously installed
with the old Gnome Settings. I wanted to switch to English language but
I couldn't because of this bug.

Following the steps of the bug description, the only difference was the
terminal warning: "Language it_IT not installed, trying to install it"
..which is a bit strange because the system was already set to Italian, I
wanted to set the en_US.UTF-8.

I've noticed that while trying to change the language settings, the
strings in /etc/default/locale don't change at all.

:: WORKAROUND

1- sudo nano /etc/default/locale
2- Comment or delete the existing strings end write the following:

LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en"

If I want to go back to the Italian setup I just need to write the
following:

LANG="it_IT.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="it:en"

3- Press [Ctrl]+O and [Enter] to save the file. Press then [Ctrl]+X to exit
from Nano editor.
4- Log-out and log-in again or restart the system. After the log-in the system
is asking if you would like to update the names of the folders into $HOME
(Desktop, Music, Video, etc..).

[Bug 1716432] [NEW] With dash to dock enabled, title in window is not centred aligned to clock when the window is maximised

2017-09-11 Thread Andrew Hayzen
Public bug reported:

With the dash-to-dock extension enabled and intelli-hide not enabled,
the title of applications is not centre aligned with the gnome shell
clock, as shown here [0].

Possible solutions are
1) When the window is maximised to align the title to the monitor centre not
window centre
2) When dash-to-dock is enabled move the clock to be slightly off monitor
centre so it would line up with the window centre
3) Ignore the alignment issue :-)

[Bug 1716419] [NEW] File Transfer progress indicator would not go away

2017-09-11 Thread Dilip
Public bug reported:

I use stock Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity. Since some time I have been
noticing that the file transfer indicator on launcher icon for Nautilus
won't go away ( even if file transfer is complete )

The icon indicator gives an idea that there is still file transfer in
progress, while there is none. I could see the progress indicator across
various icon theme. For eg. in Unity Icon Theme, Papirus Icon Theme.

If I remember correctly, it's been there since Sept 2016 ( at the least
).

It would be great if you guys can fix it.

PS: I tried the commands you gave for a good bug report.I couldn't get
any output on the terminal for those commands. Just to be clear, I have
latest updates installed.

[Bug 1716409] Re: Unable to install flatpak on Ubuntu artful

2017-09-11 Thread Martin Wimpress
I installed `gnome-software-plugin-flatpak`.

I had to download the `flatpakref` file, then double click it via the
file manager, which caused GNOME Software to spit assorted errors and
claims of something going wrong. I was however presented with an Install
button which when clicked prompted for a password and then dumped me
back at an Install button.

I then searched GNOME Software for 'Pithos' and it found an entry where
the source was flathub. I was able to install it by clicking the Install
button.

I doubt what I've described is how the installation flatpaks is intended
to work. Can someone confirm the intended experience so we can identify
what might not be working correctly in Ubuntu?

[Bug 1716415] [NEW] Alt + Tab then Alt + Right / Left arrow logs me out

2017-09-11 Thread Brian Murray
Public bug reported:

One of my systems if I use Alt + Tab to launch the window switcher and
then use Alt + Right or Left arrow to switch windows I either receive a
tty or get the gdm lock screen. Neither behavior is what I'd expect -
the key stroke moving through the window list. This seems to work on
another system of mine and certainly did work on this system (otherwise
I wouldn't be using the key stroke) so perhaps a package was updated and
I haven't rebooted yet?

[Bug 1716409] [NEW] Unable to install flatpak on Ubuntu artful

2017-09-11 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

I saw a news article with a link to install a flatpak.

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/09/download-pithos-pandora-app-1-4

I clicked the link expecting to be able to install the flatpak, but the
experience appears broken. I'm on an up to date Artful install

What I did was:-

Click on http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/09/download-pithos-pandora-app-1-4
Click the flathub link:-
https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/io.github.Pithos.flatpakref
This downloaded the flatpakref file.
I clicked the file in my browser, nothing happened

I then tried finding the file in nautilus and double clicked it.
GNOME Software launched and presented an error "Don't know how to handle
'file:///home/alan/Downloads/io.github.Pithos.flatpakref' (see screenshot).

If I search for pithos in GNOME Software I am able to find the older
version from the deb repo, but not the newer version from flathub.

Do we not support flatpak/flathub out of the box? Or is my system
uniquely hosed?

[Bug 1716378] [NEW] No sensible diagnostics for expired certificates

2017-09-11 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Public bug reported:

I had a running OpenVPN setup that one day "suddenly" failed to connect.
It took a while to figure out that the certificates I've been using had
expired.

Expected:
- An error message indicating that certificates expired.

Actual:
- Generic failure to connect error message.
- Generic OpenVPN log file contents.

It might be nice to check certificate validity before handing
certificates off to OpenVPN to use. If the certificate is expired, the
far more user friendly thing to do would be to show a specific error
bubble stating that's the case.

[Bug 1716160] Re: System goes to sleep with lid closed after login

2017-09-11 Thread Franck
Thanks @Daniel for the workaround, it does the trick.

Notice however, as I'm not sure I was clear enough, that the lid is
already closed when the session begins, it's not an event that happens
while the session has began.

Also notice it is a regression regarding the behaviour of Unity 7...

[Bug 1705157] Re: "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu on Xorg" randomly start the same session (maybe Wayland maybe Xorg)

2017-09-11 Thread Iain Lane
I'm looking at the "first login gives the wrong session" bug. I can
reproduce in a VM that it says "Ubuntu" but you get "Ubuntu on X" (or
whatever the exact name is).

In this case GDM is using the "fallback" (default) session. It is set to
ubuntu-xorg despite ubuntu being valid, being the first in the list and
being selected in the UI. I think there might be a difference in sorting
between the UI's presentation of sessions and the selection of fallback
sessions - that's what I'm about to start investigating.

[Bug 1716357] [NEW] a typo in evince-previewer.desktop breaks /etc/mailcap

2017-09-11 Thread Esko Järnfors
Public bug reported:

Release version: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Package version: 3.18.2-1ubuntu4.1

/usr/share/applications/evince-previewer.desktop comes from the evince
package. It has an empty entry in mime types between application/x-ext-
cb7 and application/oxps.

===8<===
...
MimeType=application/pdf;application/x-bzpdf;application/x-gzpdf;application/x-xzpdf;application/x-ext-pdf;application/postscript;application/x-bzpostscript;application/x-gzpostscript;image/x-eps;image/x-bzeps;image/x-gzeps;application/x-ext-ps;application/x-ext-eps;application/x-dvi;application/x-bzdvi;application/x-gzdvi;application/x-ext-dvi;image/vnd.djvu;application/x-ext-djv;application/x-ext-djvu;image/tiff;application/x-cbr;application/x-cbz;application/x-cb7;application/x-ext-cbr;application/x-ext-cbz;application/x-ext-cb7;;application/oxps;application/vnd.ms-xpsdocument;
...
===>8===

This entry gets included in /etc/mailcap via update-mime trigger from
the package mime-support and the result is a broken line:

===8<===
...
application/x-ext-cb7; evince-previewer %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
; evince-previewer %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
application/oxps; evince-previewer %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
...
===>8===

Some programs that use /etc/mailcap get confused by the broken line so
it would be nice if the typo it originates from was fixed.

The expected result in /etc/mailcap from running update-mime:
===8<===
...
application/x-ext-cb7; evince-previewer %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
application/oxps; evince-previewer %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
...
===>8===

[Bug 1715722] Re: Allow safe override of GDM3 theme

2017-09-11 Thread Didier Roche
Thanks for reporting the bug upstream! I tried to add some more context
to the upstream bug report from our vendor perspective.

The fix looks good, thanks! I'm currently testing it more. Also, I'm
adding gnome-session to it: we can provide the same experience for
people wanting to go really full GNOME and installing gnome-session. The
priority though is lower than ubuntu's default, ofc.

I'll give it a little bit more test (I just modified slightly your
description) and will sponsor it, thanks again!

[Bug 1716341] [NEW] Settings for external monitor are delete after reboot, suspension, log out

2017-09-11 Thread Jeremie Tamburini
Public bug reported:

New Gnome Settings on Ubuntu 17.10

Settings for external monitor are working but after reboot/suspension
/log-out log-in, the system will not remember the setup.

Example:
1- open Gnome Settings and select "Devices → Displays"
2- set the external monitor as "Single Display" and click on "Apply"
3- log-out

After log-in the laptop monitor will be set as default instead of the
external monitor.

[Bug 1714410] Re: Can't change display configuration, Method ApplyConfiguration is not implemented on interface org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig

2017-09-11 Thread Rocko
I logged bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-
center/+bug/1716322 for my issue (g-c-c can't change display settings
due to scale factor 2).

I think we need a separate bug for not remembering the settings after a
restart because this bug thinks it's fixed, and I think it's a bug in
gnome settings daemon rather than g-c-c.

I find Artful to be pretty flaky at the moment when restarting -
sometimes it remembers my settings, sometimes it doesn't; sometimes I
get a Wayland session but sometimes I get an X11 session (even though
I've always selected the Wayland option at login). Sometimes the Wayland
session crashes. In X11 I can change the resolution using xrandr, but
not in Wayland. In Wayland I can adjust the trackpad settings, but not
in X11.

[Bug 1716322] Re: gnome-control-centre fails to change display resolution due to "Scale 2 not valid for resolution"

2017-09-11 Thread Rocko
This might be related to the setting "org.gnome.desktop.interface
scaling-factor", because if I manually set it to zero (gsettings set
org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 0), g-c-c now can change the
display resolution.

But g-c-c should not fail just because of an invalid setting.

[Bug 1716322] [NEW] gnome-control-centre fails to change display resolution due to "Scale 2 not valid for resolution"

2017-09-11 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

When I run g-c-c and try to change the laptop's display resolution from
4K to 1920x1080, it fails silently (it should really show the error, but
that's another bug). If I have run it from the console, this message
appears:

(gnome-control-center:5356): display-cc-panel-WARNING **: Config not
applicable: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Scale 2
not valid for resolution 1920x1080

I'm currently running in an X11 sesssion, but that's only because
Wayland keeps crashing and the session seems to be defaulting back to
X11 when I run it again.
