[Bug 1662031] Re: Switching language and format broken

2017-10-10 Thread Olivier Tilloy
See conversation on the upstream bug report. It turns out calling
set_up_session_language() earlier (e.g. in on_setup_complete_cb) doesn't
fix the problem: gdm_session_start_session() calls send_environment(),
which overrides the environment set up by pam with the values from
/etc/default/locale again.

I guess not calling set_up_session_language() at all is the correct fix
in our case.

[Bug 1722533] Re: Gnome shell crashes on dual monitor lock screen

2017-10-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears that mutter is responsible for crashing your gnome-shell:

Oct 10 09:24:54 christophev-laptop kernel: gnome-shell[3920]: segfault
at 8 ip 7fae2eb67877 sp 7ffe5f1664d0 error 4 in
libmutter-1.so.0.0.0[7fae2eabe000+141000]

However in order to diagnose the problem further we will need a stack
trace. Please look in /var/crash for relevant crash files. And then
submit them using this command:

ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

[Bug 1722588] Re: crash on suspend

2017-10-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

Open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

[Bug 1722041] Re: No Ubuntu wayland option when swiching user with automatic login

2017-10-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I discovered recently that one way to make the Wayland login options
vanish is to have any bug in the mutter eglnative backend that triggers
an assertion. gnome-shell doesn't treat this as fatal, but it does
remove Wayland options from the list of login sessions in that case.

So this assertion from your log might be relevant:

loka 08 10:50:57 username-System-Product-Name gnome-shell[2848]:
setup_framebuffers: assertion 'width > 0' failed

Or it might be one of the other gnome-shell assertions in your log.

Subject: such an inspiration!

I say take it to the next level this year:

1. Weigh yourself immediately before and after, if possible. Get the weight
of your poo each time and do the math at the end of the year.
2. Note the amount of tp squares you use and how many ply it is. Estimate
how many rolls of tp you used at the end of the year.
3. Note the day/time of your poo, average when you're most likely to go
throughout the day.

[Bug 1722588] Re: crash on suspend

2017-10-10 Thread David Britton
FYI -- using apt-btrfs-snapshot reverts, I have nailed this down to an
update from:

gnome-shell 3.26.0 to 3.26.1

If I revert the package, the crash on suspend stops.

[Bug 1722652] [NEW] Silent private key password failure

2017-10-10 Thread Dylan Powers
Public bug reported:

If an openvpn connection has the private key password set to "Ask for
this password everytime", when an incorrect password is typed into the
prompt upon connecting, rather than reprompt for the password on
password failure (or immediately fail), nm-openvpn just reattempts the
same password over and over for a minute.

The following is repeated in the logs every 2 seconds:
Oct 10 13:48:02 mubuntu nm-openvpn[27181]: NOTE: the current --script-security
setting may allow this configuration to ca
Oct 10 13:48:02 mubuntu nm-openvpn[27181]:
SIGUSR1[soft,private-key-password-failure] received, process restarting

The workaround is to wait a minute for some sort of timeout to occur or go into
the settings and flip the "Ask for this password everytime" option to force a
reprompt.

[Bug 1722353] Re: Screen blanking and/or screen lock crashes gnome-shell user session on wayland - Ubuntu 17.10 beta

2017-10-10 Thread DJ Dallas
I did some experimenting. The wayland gnome-shell crash and monitor
power-saving issue seems to be limited to a hdmi connection, and has
something to do with the monitor searching for a signal on other inputs
after it has been blanked.

I dug out an old d-sub vga cable and connected the monitor to the graphics card
with that. Timed blanking of the screen or locking the desktop manually did not
cause a gnome-shell crash on wayland when using the d-sub cable. Monitor power
saving worked as expected.
The next thing I tried was reconnecting the hdmi cable and locking the monitor
to the hdmi input and turning off the automatic signal selection. With the
monitor configured that way, both timed blanking and manual locking of the
desktop worked as expected. The monitor successfully went to sleep and the
session resumed after user input.
I also tried plugging in a tv using hdmi. That didn't produce any session
crashes. However the tv makes no attempt to blank itself or enter a
power-saving mode; it just stays on with a "No Signal" notice.
I also connected an old 1680x1050 monitor using a dvi cable. That simply
refused to boot past the Ubuntu splash screen. However the same monitor works
perfectly when booting into the 17.10 beta live-cd, but the live-cd runs on a
xorg session and not wayland.
Next I connected that same old monitor using dvi together with the newer dell
over hdmi simultaneously, and booted successfully into a wayland session. (That
this combination actually worked and booted barely makes sense. Also the
primary monitor was changed between login prompt and the desktop being loaded,
but whatever...) With multiple monitors connected timed blanking or desktop
locking did not crash the gnome-shell session, but they still did not blank
properly. After blanking both screens, they were immediately both turned on
again with a only a black background and the mouse cursor on the primary
monitor. And that is how they stayed, with backlights both still on. No
blanking or power-saving was done thereafter. Mouse or keyboard input would
return the lock-screen to the displays and unlocking with a password would
successfully return the active user session. Lastly, after again locking the
dell monitor to the hdmi input and turning off the automatic signal selection,
both monitors would successfully enter power-saving modes and the user session
could be resumed after unlocking with a password.

TL;DR = It seems that the monitor disconnecting itself from the
blanked/inactive hdmi input in order to search for an active vga input
signal is what is triggering the gnome-shell crash and/or preventing the
monitor from entering its power-saving mode.

[Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2017-10-10 Thread Jeremy Soller
12:36 seb128 dmj_s76, right, we are likely to get it reviewed next cycle
12:37 seb128 it hasn't been high priority for us since we don't use

12:37 seb128 but we should be able to review those changes anyways
12:51 jackpot51 seb128 what about for creating new users? It is not
supported in gnome-control-center either
12:52 seb128 jackpot51, that would be a nice improvement to get

[Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2017-10-10 Thread Jeremy Soller
IRC Log:

10:39 jackpot51 Can we talk about this patch again?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1699216
···
10:39 ubot5 Ubuntu bug 1699216 in gnome-initial-setup (Ubuntu) "Encrypted
home support" [Wishlist,Confirmed]
10:40 jackpot51 I just saw a new accountsservice show up, superseding
my patches for encrypted home.
10:40 jackpot51 Here is a debdiff of the patch I want to keep in
accountsservice, one that allows gnome-initial-setup and gnome-control-center
to support Encrypted Home
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1699216/+attachment/4945507/+files/accountsservice_encrypt_home.debdiff
···
10:40 ubot5 Ubuntu bug 1699216 in gnome-initial-setup (Ubuntu) "Encrypted
home support" [Wishlist,Confirmed]
10:41 jackpot51 GunnarHj and others would you mind taking a look?
10:44 seb128 jackpot51, sounds a bit late in this cycle for such changes
10:47 jackpot51 All I want is the accountsservice patch, so we don't
have to hold a forked accountsservice
10:52 jbicha we never found anyone willing to review the accountsservice
patch :(
10:53 jackpot51 Well, every time accountsservice gets updated in
Ubuntu, I get fucked. Why? Because I cannot rename the package.
10:53 jackpot51 So I am probably going to have to drop the patches for
encrypted home entirely
10:56 jbicha once Ubuntu 17.10 is released, any SRUs for accountsservice
will have to age in -proposed for at least 7 days first. That gives you time to
update your PPA.
10:56 jackpot51 Ok, that would be good
10:57 jackpot51 Many users are getting pop-gnome-initial-setup removed
if they dist-upgrade
10:58 jackpot51 It doesn't break their systems, but it introduces a
significant amount of maintenance work
11:54 GunnarHjHi jackpot51, sorry if you felt ignored by my
accountsservice upload. That was not my intention.
11:54 GunnarHjI have noticed your patches previously, but
unfortunately they are too complex for me to review. The change I uploaded was
a trivial one, and that's what I do - trivial stuff. :)
11:54 GunnarHjHopefully some experienced developer will find the time
in the beginning of next cycle.
11:57 jackpot51 I dropped all our patches. Users will have to wait
until Ubuntu can merge the patch, it is too much maintenance work to have
encrypted home in gnome-initial-setup and gnome-control-center
11:59 jackpot51 The only other alternative was to use an epoch, which
would make it impossible to go back to the Ubuntu version if the patches are
merged
12:00 dmj_s76 This patch represents a fairly important feature for us.

This likely will not be fixed before Ubuntu 17.10 is released, but once
it is fixed, it will make a good Stable Release Update candidate.

I considered disabling the broken Actions from the .desktop as a
workaround, but I think that could cause translation problems when the
bug is actually fixed.

[Bug 1722583] [NEW] Revert empathy to 3.12.14

2017-10-10 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Empathy is undermaintained.

Upstream recommends that distros do not ship empathy 3.25.90 but instead
ship 3.12.14. Specifically, there are some bugs in the new version that
may take months before they are fixed.

https://mail.gnome.org/archives/distributor-
list/2017-September/msg0.html

(3.25.90 was released ~10 days before 3.12.14 was and ~2 weeks before
that announcement. We wanted a new empathy release to move to webkit2.)

Therefore, we should use a 3.25.90+really3.12.14 version for empathy for
Ubuntu 17.10.

[Bug 1712535] Re: Re-enable indicator support in empathy (Artful)

2017-10-10 Thread Ken VanDine
Those patches wouldn't actually provide libappindicator support needed
for the gnome-shell extension. Those patches provided integration with
the messaging indicator and unity. Not the application indicator. I'd
really like to see a messaging indicator extension for gnome-shell,
similar to appindicator, at some point.

[Bug 1722570] [NEW] Numbers of sidebar icons only show after Super + Number key had been pressed

2017-10-10 Thread Robert Orzanna
Public bug reported:

Hi all,

The discussion started here:

https://community.ubuntu.com/t/show-the-number-on-the-sidebar-icons-
when-just-holding-super-key/426/5?u=orschiro

Basically, you press Super + Number key to open a specific app from the
sidebar which position corresponds to the number you pressed.

Then you get to see this useful number on the icon.

The suggestion would be to show this number prior to opening the
application.

I tried to to describe this situation in this video:

[Bug 1722533] [NEW] Gnome shell crashes on dual monitor lock screen

2017-10-10 Thread djpate
Public bug reported:

I have a dual screen setup on my laptop. One is HIDPI and the other one
is a classic external monitor over HDMI.

I've setup my screens the way I like it and they work fine as long as
the computer doesn't look himself due to inactivity.

As soon as this happens, gnome crashes and I have to log back in -
sometimes 3-4 times before getting back to my desktop but with all
prograns and windows closed.

Upstream Gnome explicitly disabled the Desktop. I don't think they'd be

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1722501] [NEW] Tiling gedit sauses the gedit window to get stuck.

2017-10-10 Thread Jacob Vlijm
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu Budgie Beta2, fully updated, dragging a gedit window to be
tiled causes the window to be stuck where it is dropped.

Related: https://github.com/budgie-desktop/budgie-desktop/issues/1185
and https://github.com/budgie-desktop/budgie-desktop/issues/1189

After the fix, mentioned here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=788666, most windows can be
tiled now, except for gedit windows. Those still make the desktop hang.

[Bug 1698270] Re: Totem pauses and stutters during video playback even when CPU usage is low

2017-10-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Now looking into issue 3 from comment #11 again.

Every time the big stutter occurs it coincides with my PC's harddisk
LED. Also, the same place in the video seems to be the first time the
stream bitrate peaks over 10Mbps. So there seems to be some kind of
cause and effect at this particularly detailed part of the video.

The stutter only occurs in totem though. No other gstreamer tool seems
to exhibit the problem when playing the same video. Even using "gst-
launch-1.0 playbin uri=file:///" seems to not have the problem. So
all evidence at the moment is suggesting the biggest stutter is somehow
specific to the totem binary, and not gstreamer in general.

I've also just noticed a 5th source of stuttering; that is using
clutterautovideosink in an X11 session. Will ignore that problem for
now...

[Bug 1722487] [NEW] Failing to open some pictures - Improper call to JPEG library in state 200

2017-10-10 Thread Simon P.
Public bug reported:

When I am inserting the SD card of my camera in the PC and have a look
at the pictures, eog sometimes fails to show them, giving this error:
Improper call to JPEG library in state 200

I get that error when I am using the keyboard arrows to go back and forth
between the pictures I took. The next time I try to open the picture, it is
shown without a problem.
