[Bug 1881851] Re: Memory leak from GDM's gnome-shell process
The first thing we need to check is what extensions might be installed system-wide that could interfere with the login screen. Please run 'gnome-shell-extension-prefs' and disable/remove all but the three Ubuntu-default extensions. Then reboot. Since this test may take some days or weeks to complete I will also mark this bug as private, to avoid noise from unwanted "me too" comments. At least until the cause of the leak is known. ** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Information type changed from Public to Private -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1881851 Title: Memory leak from GDM's gnome-shell process To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1881851/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1881851] [NEW] Memory leak from GDM's gnome-shell process
Public bug reported: On my laptop that I keep running but suspend/resume multiple times per day, the gnome-shell process which GDM keeps running in the background has some type of memory leak. It is currently up to 2 GiB after an "uptime" of 28 days. No issues with the actual gnome-shell process I use at 382M, though it appears to have crashed/restarted more recently. $ ps -efly S UID PIDPPID C PRI NI RSSSZ WCHAN STIME TTY TIME CMD S gdm 48014325 0 80 0 2069448 3159004 - May05 ? 00:03:07 /usr/bin/gnome-shell S hackel7553185378 1 80 0 392064 1374538 poll_s May26 ? 02:21:02 /usr/bin/gnome-shell ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 Package: gnome-shell 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-29.33-generic 5.4.30 Uname: Linux 5.4.0-29-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: zfs zunicode zavl icp zcommon znvpair nvidia_modeset nvidia ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.2 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip Date: Wed Jun 3 00:33:57 2020 DisplayManager: gdm3 GsettingsChanges: InstallationDate: Installed on 2019-12-03 (182 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 19.10 "Eoan Ermine" - Release amd64 (20191017) RelatedPackageVersions: mutter-common 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 SourcePackage: gnome-shell UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to focal on 2020-04-24 (39 days ago) ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug focal third-party-packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1881851 Title: Memory leak from GDM's gnome-shell process To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1881851/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thanks. Yes indeed the X server has zero monitors attached, but still has a usable desktop area of 1024x768. [Bug 1793007] Re: gnome-disk-image-mounter creates loopback device but it is not mounted automatically
This bug is still valid in Ubuntu 20.04. The utility creates the loopback device OK, but the mount sometimes works and sometimes silently fails. This utility has no debug or verbosity option, so there's no way for the end user to give useful information about the failure. That's something that could be remedied first if the devs have no idea why it fails. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-disk-utility in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1793007 Title: gnome-disk-image-mounter creates loopback device but it is not mounted automatically To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-disk-utility/+bug/1793007/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 968213] Re: Too many icons in Gnome Shell Activities Overview require ellipses
There has been many proposals to upstream throughout years for fixing that stupid and ridiculous ellipsis. [Bug 1236619] Re: gvfs smb / cifs file copy performance is terribly slow
Apologies, launchpad didn't keep the neatly tab separated column format, but hopefully the script can help others to test. Attached png of side-by-side comparison of script output. Only the latency for accessing a single 4K block doesn't seem to differ too much, but for every other mult-block sequential IO read, in terms of latency, bandwidth and IOPS, GVFS is over 10 times slower than CIFS. While I know fuse mounts (userspace filesystems) will be understandably slower than kernel space mounts, more than 10 times slower is significant and indicates there's inefficiencies / room for improvement. ** Attachment added: "GVFS-SMB vs CIFS" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/1236619/+attachment/5379760/+files/gvfs-smb_vs_cifs_seq_read_benchmark_ubuntu_18.04.4.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1236619 Title: gvfs smb / cifs file copy performance is terribly slow To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/1236619/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Hi Salima, this bug has been identified as happening only for people who were upgrading from a previous version of Ubuntu (that came with a previous version of Pulseaudio). Daniel Van Vugt found a workaround (check comments 18 and 19 above), and a fix has been made by the Pulseaudio developers and is being reviewed (see comment 41 above). [Bug 1881687] [NEW] Desktop is blank after logging in without a monitor attached
You have been subscribed to a public bug: On Ubuntu 20.04, I have an AMD system with an integrated GPU (Ryzen 3 3200G with Radeon Vega 8) I am using lightdm instead of gdm3. My GPU is using the amdgpu driver. I have no specific xorg.conf in place. I am using x11vnc to login and view the desktop remotely. There is no monitor attached. After logging into lightdm's greeter, I am presented with a blank desktop with the Focal Fossa background image and a mouse cursor, but no other visible interface or windows. There is no menu bar at the top of the desktop and no application bar on the left. This all works perfectly fine if a monitor is attached before lightdm (and thus Xorg) is started. If I change the settings at login to use fvwm for my session it works fine. This is also the case for Gnome Flashback mode (using metacity). But the default of gnome-shell/mutter does not work without the monitor. Nor does using Wayland. [Bug 1881542] Re: Can't lock my screen after the latest update
Thanks for the video. That clearly shows gnome-shell is crashing, as hinted by your syslog output too... Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps: 1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug. 2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us. 3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921, reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1. Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself. ** Tags added: focal ** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Summary changed: - Can't lock my screen after the latest update + gnome-shell is crashing when trying to lock the screen -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1881542 Title: gnome-shell is crashing when trying to lock the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1881542/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1881423] Re: error channel closing too late to send/recv
Best I can tell that message is from Firefox. Sometimes applications' log messages get incorrectly labelled as coming from the shell. ** Package changed: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) => firefox (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1881423 Title: error channel closing too late to send/recv To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1881423/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
