[Bug 2035016] Re: one of 3 monitors "frozen" when a window moves there

2023-09-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I managed to finally reproduce this by accident:

1. Set up 3 monitors.

2. Fullscreen a window on one of them.

3. The monitor with the fullscreen window accidentally lost HDMI
connection. When plugged back in it was frozen.

[Bug 2037017] [NEW] Sharing tab hangs gnome-control-center

2023-09-21 Thread Dave Jones
Public bug reported:

On the Ubuntu Desktop for Raspberry Pi current Mantic beta images (with
gnome-control-center version 1.45.0-1ubuntu1), on a Raspberry Pi 4B,
switching to the "Sharing" tab hangs the application (presenting the
Force Quit / Wait overlay prompt).

Worse, re-launching the application simply re-opens the "Sharing" tab
resulting in another hang. A workaround for now is to launch the
application from the command-line, forcing initial selection of a
different tab, e.g. "gnome-control-center info-overview".

Launching the application from the command line with "gnome-control-
center sharing" also causes the hang, but unfortunately there's no
additional console output to shed any light on the situation. I'm not
sure if this is Pi specific (haven't attempted it on any other platforms
yet).

[Bug 1965303] Re: Migrate from fbdev drivers to simpledrm and DRM fbdev emulation layer

2023-09-21 Thread Mario Limonciello
I've uploaded the jammy backport of this patch into the queue, so
assigning it to myself. As I have readily seen this problem on my own
test kernels I'll validate it with a local kernel with the matching
kconfig options when it's accepted. This can then be done in advance of
waiting for matching changes landing in OEM-6.5, or HWE-6.5.

** Changed in: gdm3 (Ubuntu Jammy)
   Status: Triaged => In Progress

** Changed in: gdm3 (Ubuntu Jammy)
Assignee: (unassigned) => Mario Limonciello (superm1)

** Description changed:

- [ Impact ]
+ [ Impact ]
The fbdev subsystem has been deprecated for a long time. We should drop it in
favour of using simpledrm with fbdev emulation layer.

  This requires Kernel config changes:

  FB_EFI=n
  FB_VESA=n

fbcon will still require FB to be available, but will use the fbdev
  emulation layer

When this stack is enabled, it changes boot timing such that some
drivers may take a longer time to boot and GDM may hang in a black
  screen.

+ This issue has been readily reproduced in Ubuntu and reported to upstream
mutter.

  * Ensure that a kernel with required kernel changes can boot to GDM using DRM
driver (amdgpu, i915, or nouveau)

[ Where Problems could occur ]
  * Race conditions could be exposed to DE environments
  * Software that expects to find DRM device at /dev/dri/card0 may have a
problem.
  * Some older versions of NVIDIA driver might not work properly.

This is a tracking bug for Change: Replace the fbdev drivers with simpledrm and
the DRM fbdev emulation layer
For more details, see:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/ReplaceFbdevDrivers

This change replaces the legacy Linux frame buffer device (fbdev)
drivers that are still used in Fedora, with the latest simpledrm driver
and the DRM fbdev emulation layer.

If you encounter a bug related to this Change, please do not comment
here. Instead create a new bug and set it to block this bug.

[Bug 2036957] [NEW] [mantic] Nvidia GPU not detected using on-demand

2023-09-21 Thread Francois Thirioux
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Laptop: Legion with Intel + Nvidia 3070 gpu

I reported https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2033735
but I realize this could be a GNOME (including gdm?) issue. That's not a
hardware failure as W11+hdmi is working with on-demand. That's not
Nvidia-535 related since I get the same bug using Nouveau.

- Using Nvidia dGPU: all is ok (well, in a X11 session!)

- Using dynamic graphics:
--- Nvidia gpu is not listed in g-c-c system details (only Intel gpu is listed)
--- App menu's option to launch with dGPU is missing
--- HDMI monitor is not detected

When I boot, I notice in gdm's screen that my monitor is not activated
(full black). It is when I use Nvidia dGPU-only mode. So that's not only
a GS stuff, as far as I can see.

I get this related to Nvidia in logs:

[Bug 2035016] Re: one of 3 monitors "frozen" when a window moves there

2023-09-21 Thread William Grant
Here's another journal from the boot after the one before, with the same
settings as before (I've set MUTTER_DEBUG_TRIPLE_BUFFERING=never but not
yet rebooted).

My primary display should have multiple hangs in the last couple of
minutes here. I unwisely fullscreened a YouTube video in Firefox, and
recovered by replugging my docking station. This repeated a few times,
with a LUKS unlock prompt sometimes stopping it from hanging until I
dismissed the dialog, until I hit Esc to de-fullscreen the video and
replugged one last time. I think my secondary display might also have
hung at some point during this boot, but I forget.

[Bug 2036647] Journal log

2023-09-21 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Yesterday I got crashes whenever I tried to maximize it or resize it.

I started Ubuntu on Wayland from SDDM though.

After I started it from GDM I no longer reproduce the problem, although
I rebooted in between so...

I didn't get a crash file in /var/crash. I attach the journal from
yesterday, filtered for gnome-terminal. You can see 3 segfaults, and I
think that is indeed the number of times I tried the terminal before
giving up on it.

No, this is a fresh Mantic minimal install from 18/9 with all software
installed as snaps, except from MATLAB (propriety), RStudio (deb),
thinlinc (deb) and nautilus-dropbox (deb).

As I wrote above, I noticed that locale seems to be a mix of en_US and

en_US.

[Bug 2036597] Re: Strange permissions and/or links to default directories in home folder (Music, Pictures, Public, Templates and Videos))

2023-09-21 Thread Martin Randau
.config/user-dirs.dirs is rewritten at boot and logout/login and xdg-
user-dirs-update after correcting the file and logout/login does not re-
create the folders. It's not nautilus-dropbox since removing it does not
stop the error from occurring. Attaching a log from a boot where before
rebooting I had corrected user-dirs.dirs. When I logged in, my changes
were gone and the folders were again links to themselves. Note that
Pictures and Documents were not changed to links, probably because these
were non-empty.

[Bug 2035016] Re: one of 3 monitors "frozen" when a window moves there

2023-09-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Interesting, thats 3 monitors on an Intel GPU. I can't see any errors
that would lead to a freeze, but the second last CRTC to be used there
(CRTC 182) does seem to have been using fullscreen direct scanout on its
last frame. It also looks like mutter is intending to display the cursor
on that CRTC for subsequent frames but no calls to the kernel were made
to do so.

The common theme here seems to be fullscreen direct scanout was used
before the freeze.

Will: Do you find that MUTTER_DEBUG_TRIPLE_BUFFERING=never solves it,
like Ernst does?
