[Bug 44756] Calculator wont turn on "Thousands Separator".
Public bug reported: The calculator, Gcalctool 5.6.31, has a minor bug. The menu option "View, Show Thousands Separator", often doesn't work. Its a bug in toggling this option on and off. As well as often failing to turn this mode on, it also can fail to turn this mode off. If I use the keyboard shortcut, ^K, this also fails to work. No, on second thoughts, perhaps its not a bug, it just looks like one. It just doesn't behave the way I expected it to. I've had a further look at this, and now I'm not sure if its a bug, or just unexpected behaviour. If I enter a number, then select the option to Show Thousands Seperator, it doesn't change how the existing number is displayed. So I thought that the "Show Thousands Separator" mode was not working. But if I press the "=" key then it correctly shows commas in the number. This may not count as a bug. But I had difficulty turning on this mode, because I saw that the existing number had not changed, (commas were not added to it), so I thought it was not working. I realise that when the user enters a number, the program can't add commas yet, because it doesn't know the user had finished entering the number until he presses "=" or some other operator key. But when I selected the option to "Show Thousands Separator", I expected the number currently being displayed by the calculator to change, at once. Perhaps it should be changed to do so. Your comments are welcome on this. Should the calculator have this small change made to it? ** Affects: gcalctool (Ubuntu) Severity: Minor Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed -- Calculator wont turn on "Thousands Separator". https://launchpad.net/bugs/44756 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 44770] HAL bootup command is wrong (falls back to -h)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hal When my Kubuntu/Ubuntu loads up, and the Usplash screen starts loading processes, I noticed after a dist-upgrade and the removal of Klaptop for Kpowersave (which doesn't work either because of this HAL problem), HAL no longer loads properly (My guess is one of the switches is wrong because it falls back to what I believe is the --help screen. When I start "/usr/sbin/hald start" manually it runs (shows up in Ksysguard, actually, two show up, one is 12K and the other bigger and actually shows the command that I run to start hal (/usr/sbin/hal)). It runs for about 5-10 minutes (I'm guessing, not actually counting) then it disappears from ksysguard, and I'm back to the normal, typeable terminal where I chose to "/usr/sbin/hald restart" and it showed up in ksysguard for another 10 mins then it went. Then I did "/usr/sbin/hald stop" and it's now showing up in ksysguard again. Oh wait, it just stopped (not showing up anymore). Any suggestions? I use synaptic to reinstall hal, libhal1, and still it's broken. Any more info you need? [Bug 32643] Re: [Bug 32643] Re: unmounting of removable drives should show a progress dialog
Windows recognizes the difference between a USB mass storage device that's a smaller removable device (i.e. flash drive) vs a larger device (i.e. external hard drive). It sets sync on smaller devices and async on larger devices. I feel we should do the same, also. I would rather lose some of my life on a thumb drive rather than having to remember to sync it periodically to avoid losing data in case of a system lockup/crash/poweroff. Why should we have a different way to handle large removable devices than we do internal static drives? The scenario you show would also happen to a normal disk drive, because they are async by default (however, things like journaling help this a lot). I recently (April 2006 or May 2006) posted a message about this issue to the ubuntu-devel mailing list, and I was told that it's not possible to use a high resolution framebuffer because that would break compatibility with certain older hardware. [Bug 35423] Re: System clock reverts to GMT at boot
I was about to report a bug about the time going haywire as well, but I *think* the problem described in this bugreport is identical to my problem. Previous releases of Ubuntu didn't have the Ubiquity Live CD installer. Those installers used to ask me a question about whether the time was set to local time or GMT (if I recall correctly). My most recent Ubuntu install was done with a recent Ubuntu Flight of Dapper, with the Ubiquity Live CD installer. The Ubiquity installer does not ask the question. My timezone is set to Europe/Amsterdam, my time zone is GMT + 02:00 (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/europe/european-union/the- netherlands/time.htm). However, my clock is displaying GMT + 04:00. Maybe Ubuntu thinks my time zone is GMT, and adds another 02:00 to it for some reason? That's my suspicion, I have no idea. My Windows XP install - I have a dual boot - is also affected, and is displaying the incorrect time as well. -- System clock reverts to GMT at boot https://launchpad.net/bugs/35423 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

First, the bug is also available in ubuntu but with different fonts. e.g in gedit change the font to KacstOne and you see the same bug.
