[Bug 37153] Re: Text files with national characters in their names won't open.

2006-08-07 Thread oscar
Hello
I dont know if this bug is related, but I have a similar problem.
I have several files in:
/mnt/windows/Documents and Settings/Hernández/

Beagle is indexing files ok, and beagle search shows the proper files
when I am looking for it.

But when I double-click in a file from the search window in order to
open it, the asociated application cannot open it because the path to
the file is malformed.

For example, if the file corresponds to...
/mnt/windows/Documents and Settings/Hernández/doc.htm

...then Beagle tries to open this path...
file:///mnt/windows/Documents%20and%20Settings/Hern%E1ndez/doc.htm

...but the correct one should be:
file:///mnt/windows/Documents%20and%20Settings/Hern%C3%A1ndez/doc.htm

On the other hand, if I use te option reveal in folder the folder containing
the file opens correctly in nautilus...

Thank you
Oscar

[Bug 49296] Don't accept underscore _ in usernames

2006-08-07 Thread m_ax
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: user-setup

As i was installing my ubuntu, I found out, that i am not able to use my native
username m_ax. So I continued installing with username max. Than I changed
my login in /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/group to m_ax. But even when I
open Users and Groups from Administration menu, edit my(m_ax) preferences,
and click OK, I get error: Username have invalid characters.
Before I was able to switch to m_ax name, i also tried adding line:
NAME_REGEX=([a-zA-Z][_a-z]+){2,}
to /etc/adduser.conf
After this step, I was able to add usernames with underscores _ to names, but
gnome Users and Groups still not in friedship with me :(

[Bug 38623] Re: Rhythmbox freezes when launching it while writing CD using Nautilus CD Burner

No, it mean I cancel dialog of choosing what kind of CD I want to create
and then went to choose one iso file, click right button of mouse,
choosed Burn to disk... and then while I burned CD/DVD, Rhythmbox
didn't start to play and freeze, as it was waiting for CD drive to be
free and verified.

Strange thing is that I can't replicate it on fresh install with
updates, so it could be that this bug is gone.

[Bug 50669] Re: Evolution opens MicroSoft Office .doc files read only

2006-08-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. That's a feature of evolution, files are opened to
a temporary directory and without it people were modifing them and
saving changes to the temporary directory and having difficulties to
find it again then. With the read-only mode you have to save it to a
known location and then you can modify it. Closing since that's not a
bug but a feature

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2006-08-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. What do you think that nautilus should do? Prevent
you to move your icons where you want because the text overlap? The
automatic placement bug is known (and dapper and edgy have some fix for
it), but is there any reason to prevent users to manually make their
files overlap if they want too?

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2006-08-07 Thread Miles Lane
I proposed a approach to simplifying and solving the desktop icon layout
issue about two or three years ago in the gnome.org bugzilla database,
but my proposal was ignored. My belief is that Nautilus should perform
icon title truncation like that which is done by Windows. So, for
example One Two Three Four -- Here's a long icon title might appear as
One Two Three -- Then, on a MouseOver event, the title would be
rerendered in its complete form as highlighted text in a textbox.
Moving the mouse pointer off of the textbox dismisses the textbox.
There might need to be some maximum width for the textbox, where
rediculouslylongstringsthatgoonandonforeverwithoutanyseparationcharaters
get wrapped. I'm not sure how that should be handled, but I wonder how
windows does it. I am all for desktop differentiation from Windows, but
only when there is real usability benefit. Otherwise, meeting user
expectations with desktop consistency far outweighs the benefits of
tweaking UI.

The benefits I see to this implementation are:

Layout of desktop icons becomes vastly simpler, because the icon layout
becomes a grid with the exception of those pesky (to me) enlarged or
shrunken icons that Nautilus supports. Still, not having to contend
with variable height icon labels would greatly increase the consitency
of icon layout, which would (I think) lead to fewer UI layout bugs -- a
byproduct of K.I.S.S.. Personally, I would do away with enlarged and
shrunken icons, but everytime I mention this I get shouted down with
reasons that simply make no sense to me.

On to your comment about allowing users to put icons where they want to.
I disagree that this should be an option. Sure, allow users to place an
icon in a region, but having icons or icon labels overlap is harnful to
the usability of the desktop. I am not saying that there should be a
mandatory snap to grid layout. I am just saying that when the grid is
disabled, newly added icons should never overlap another icon unless all
the desktop is filled with icons (something that I have seen my wife do
with her Apple OS/X desktop for some insane reason).

In addition to the problem of icons positioned by users is the issue of
icons that are put of the desktop as a result of persistent network
connections, hotplug events for firewire, PCMCIA and USB devices. When
devices, drives and drive partitions are detected during the setup of
the desktop, oftentimes the associated icons are overlapped when the
user icons are added. This is just plain wrong. To resolve this
particular problem, I suggest Nautilus render user icons first, so that
other mechanisms (hotplug, etc) add the icons around the user-defined
icons (documents, program links, etc).

One last observation, Windows has one more feature that I find quite
appealing. When the desktop is set to automatically place icons in a
grid, I can click on an icon and drag it around the sequence of icons.
The icons (as I am sure you know) are arranged from top-left to bottom-
left in columns that stack from left to right. So, dragging an icon
from the middle of the leftmost column to the middle of a second column
causes all the icons between the icon's initial and new position to
shift up in the stack. This enables very straightforward position of
icons in heirarchy of frequency of use. At least, this is how I
utilise it. So, I would very much like to see Nautilus support this as
an optional layout method.

Comments, questions and concerns?

Thanks,
  Miles

I LOVE the fact that this install is on one CD. Wouldn't ask you to

[Bug 13727] network-admin locations do not get saved correctly

2006-08-07 Thread Jochem Kossen
Public bug reported:

(all on hoary with gnome-system-tools 1.2.0-0ubuntu1, possibly the bugs are
upstream bugs)

When i configure multiple locations in network-admin (System - Administration
- Networking), it seems to save certain data to all locations when i select a
location. For example, i have a location 'home' in which i configure interface
'ath0' to be configured and active. Interface eth0 is not configured, and
disabled. I also have a profile called 'work' where ath0 is not configured and
not active, and eth0 is configured and active. After selecting a location,
somehow the interface settings of all profiles get saved to the selected
profile. /etc/gnome-system-tools/network/profiles.xml seems to confirm my
symptoms (enabled , key and essid are all set to the same values for every
location/profile)

Other annoying bits:
 - on boot, ubuntu seems to select the last-used profile. But when i boot, i am
most probably at a different location than i was before, so actually, there
should be a 'default' location which is always used (in my case i'd disable all
interfaces, and select a location after booting)
 - Changes to locations/interfaces seem to be applied when 1) a different
location is selected, 2) settings of an interface are changed and 3) after
closing network-admin. IMHO network-admin should have a button 'apply', or a
'cancel' button when changing profiles, so it'd not reset the network after each
action (because you can't cancel the current network changes, you can't change
the settings either, until the changes time out, in case of wrong network
settings).
 - Together with bug 6802
[https://launchpad.net/malone/bugtrackers/ubuntu-bugzilla/6802] and bug 6882
[https://launchpad.net/malone/bugtrackers/ubuntu-bugzilla/6882] this makes

[Bug 51116] Re: Inline Image Attachment/Display - Evolution 2.6.1

2006-08-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. What do you mean by The in-line image display used
to be automatic now it's not working, that you have to click on the
attachement to display it when you receive a mail? Do you have a pointer
to that upstream discussion? We don't use a lot of patches for that
package so it's likely to be an upstream issue

Thanks for your bug. That's a feature of evolution, files are opened to
a temporary directory and without it people were modifing them and
saving changes to the temporary directory and having difficulties to
find it again then. With the read-only mode you have to save it to a
known location and then you can modify it. Closing since that's not a
 bug but a feature

[Bug 51116] Re: Inline Image Attachment/Display - Evolution 2.6.1

2006-08-07 Thread razboinik
When you try to insert an image on the composer window, it will display it, but
it won't send it attached to the msg.
Then I notice that the problem seems to be in the composer preferences, I have
the forward style as inline and it doesn't attach the in-line image, if I
change the forward style to attachment then it works well.
In previous version it worked well in both forward styles so the behaviour has
change.
I posted this on evolution mailing list but it seems nobody is having issues
with it, although the fact that I'm sending an image in a new message has
anything to do with forward inline style

[Bug 55512] gnome-system-log crashes after trying to copy text

2006-08-07 Thread Mark Reitblatt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

I opened up gnome-system-log, selected 8 lines in acpid with shift-click
then went to edit - copy. The program then crashed. I haven't been able
to reproduce it, but it might have happened because I left the log open
for a while (15 minutes) before I copied.

[Bug 55513] Repeated 1-3 sec lockups in Rhythmbox while accessing CD drive

2006-08-07 Thread Mike Stukalov
Public bug reported:

Using Rhythmbox 0.9.5

1. Start the app
2. Notice that UI locks every 1-2 second for 1 to 3 seconds. In this state the
application has very bad user experience.

I did a strace and this is the function which makes UI lock:
open(/dev/scd0, O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK|O_EXCL|O_LARGEFILE) = 26

I don't know if it is related to rhythmbox itself or my system, but I
don't get any freezes with other music players...

It is also reproducible with stock Dapper package (0.9.3-something)
