[Bug 81723] Re: [apport] gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in ??()

2007-01-30 Thread hggdh
ah well. It did not take long for me to get fed up with the response
times with Valgrind running.

I could not reproduce it, but the Valgrind log does report on
unitialised buffers and lost memory. On the chance this might help, I
will attach it here.

[Bug 82321] [feisty] nautilus-cd-burner does not umount device and fails to erase automounted cdrw

2007-01-30 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

I insert a cdrw, it gets automatically mounted. I start writing an ISO
to that cd using nautilus-cd-burner, it asks if I want to erase the
cdrw, but then it fails without telling what error it had. I guess that
it is because of the cd being mounted and umount it (the only way I
found in feisty is to open a terminal and type sudo umount /dev/
Then I can burn to the cd. I think it worked in edgy.

[Bug 72732] Re: alt-f6 doesn't reliably switch between windows within an application

2007-01-30 Thread Christopher Armstrong
This is rather disappointing, given that it also doesn't work with other
applications like Emacs.

* Is there a way for me to easily get the Group name of arbitrary
windows? xwininfo doesn't provide it, as far as I can tell. Even
something that's accessible through a Python interpreter would be fine.
I guess I could do a little ctypes-ing...

* Are there any other potential sources of information to determine
which windows are from the same application, that you can think of?

[Bug 60447] Re: [edgy] Workspace switcher: Maximized windows have one pixel gap

2007-01-30 Thread Torsten Schoenfeld
Yes, it is the panel. No, I don't think it's not a bug. It makes no
sense to display a few *empty* pixel lines for the panel. It doesn't do
that for the task list (which is at the bottom, in my case). And it
also didn't do it for the panel in earlier versions. I'd happily file
this upstream if I were sure it's not caused by some Ubuntu-specific
change.

Re: [Bug 81977] Re: how to search for folders?

2007-01-30 Thread Andrew Frank
dear toby

i remeber that everying is a file (i read the original unix design
book... now you can guess how old i am (;-)

i use the gnome GUI:
i can search fine (for files and folders in my home directory) but not
down from root
e.g. open filesystem
ctrl-f: search for grub -- 0 files found (there is a directory in /boot!)

using beagle for searches for folders is not convenient, because beagle
is not always up-to-date and then does not show.

i suggest that the search in nautilus should work from the currently
displayed folder recursively downwards and search for folder and files
with a given name (allowing wildcards) - and not rely on beagle. the
answer in nautilus must be correct for the time i ask.

(i guess the above is a one line unix shell command...)

if your system does what i describe, then i would be interested to
understand where i made an error in installing (i am to ubuntu and back
to unix after N years)

thanks for the help and the good system
andrew

[Bug 77739] Re: LCD brightness setting doesn't work with Sony Vaio VGN-S5M

2007-01-30 Thread LaurentAlmeras
fdi policy file is right. I download it and it is the same I keep here.
The only problem I have is that if I click on the link, Firefox try to
open the file (because it is xml) and only displays text nodes. So I
need to right click and download.

You're right for the shift on brightness value. So the
laptop_panel.num_levels needs to be set to 20 in my fdi policy file.

I don't have the strange problem you describe. When does it happen ?
When you use smartdimmer in a terminal ? With the power management
applet ?

You should give your
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:smbios.system.product property
pour fdi policy file, in case Ubuntu packagers decide to integrate this
workaround.

[Bug 54211] Re: Gparted doesn't recognize partitions properly

2007-01-30 Thread davmor2
Basically yes it is a bug. However it is not a bug that the Ubuntu devs
can work on. It is a bug in the main program. In order for the gparted
team to work on it they need to know about the bug. You will therefore
need to report it to gnome.bugzilla.org. They may well ask for more
info which is why you will need to report it. I hope that makes it
clearer for you.

[Bug 82330] alt-f2 runbox in gnome doesn't know about ~/bin

2007-01-30 Thread Scott Anderson
Public bug reported:

Unlike a bash shell, the alt-f2 runbox only uses the system path. Any
scripts/apps/whatever in ~/bin won't be found with alt-f2.

I worked around this by adding ~/bin to the path in /etc/profile if it
exists.

[Bug 77739] Re: LCD brightness setting doesn't work with Sony Vaio VGN-S5M

2007-01-30 Thread Jonathan Lambrechts
Ok, I've got your fdi file now, sorry. My smbios.system.product key is
VGN-FE21M. But wouldn't it be preferable to detect the GPU ?
I'm not sure but I think num_levels is 21 : 0.1.2...20 and 1.2.3...21
constitute 21 different levels.
The problem (going to 0 then step up to the desired level) occurs when I change
the brightness using hal (through gnome-power-manager), not when I invoke
smartdimmer from the command line.

[Bug 82361] Subtitles look crap with default totem deinterlace method.

2007-01-30 Thread Volanin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-xine

I use totem-xine as my default media player to watch DVDs.
Everything runs fine, but when I select the deinterlace option
for interlaced DVDs, the movie subtitles (and some picture
details) start to look very pixelated.

This is very annoying.

After some research, I found that you can change the deinterlace
method in the following configuration file:

~/.gnome2/totem_config

Under these commented lines:

# deinterlace method (deprecated)
# { none bob weave greedy onefield onefield_xv linearblend }, default: 4
# video.output.xv_deinterlace_method:onefield

Although it is marked as deprecated, I uncommented the option
and experimented with the other methods, and I found out that
GREEDY gave me the best definition without the problems found
with ONEFIELD (the default method).

I am suggesting here for the default method to be changed to something
else, to avoid the pixellated effect in DVD subtitles.

Just for information:
- Celeron M 1.6GHz with 1GB RAM.
- Intel 915GM with 128MB RAM.
- Ubuntu Edgy 6.10

Thank you a lot.

Filtering on GPU is a bad idea because I think there is also computers
with nvidia chip and correct acpi implementation.

You're right for num_levels.

I have the same problem of brighness going to 0 then going to the right
brightness. It seems to be a gnome-power-manager bug (I don't have this bug on
previous version, and I just reinstalled my patch on my Feisty).
If you are interested, I have debug trace of the instructions send to hal by
gnome-power-manager (you can see it by yourself by
sudo killall hald
sudo hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes
) = there is a lot of brightness update starting from 0 value.

[Bug 76274] Re: Brightness Settings Don't Work

2007-01-30 Thread Paul Sladen
This is more likely a 'hal' or kernel issue:

  /usr/share/hal/scripts/hal-system-lcd-set-brightness

Currently has the following code for Sonys:

  elif [ $HAL_PROP_LAPTOP_PANEL_ACCESS_METHOD = sony ]; then
# echo {1..8} /proc/acpi/sony/brightness
# http://popies.net/sonypi/2.6-sony_acpi4.patch
echo $((value + 1)) $HAL_PROP_LINUX_ACPI_PATH

Does this work on your laptop. Could you also please include the DMI
decode data for your laptop as detailed on the HotkeyResearch page above
so that we can identify your laptop.

[Bug 77294] Re: gparted won't detect swapfs on Feisty Herd1

2007-01-30 Thread Brian Murray
Thanks for your bug report. Feisty Fawn Herd 2 was released somewhat
recently and Herd 3 is scheduled to come out this week. We would be
interested to know if you have the same issue with either of those.
Could you please test either one and let us know the results?

[Bug 71298] Re: Gparted in edgy version

2007-01-30 Thread Brian Murray
Thanks for you bug report, however I am not really clear on what bug you
are seeing. Could you elaborate on how gparted doesn't recognize the
/ file system? Or possibly comment on this bug with detailed steps so
we can try and recreate the issue you are seeing? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 69881] Re: Wrong partition list in gparted (sata disks) with kubuntu 6.10

2007-01-30 Thread Brian Murray
Thanks for your bug report. However, with the information you have
provided we are not currently able to troubleshoot this issue. If you
could add the output of 'fdisk -l drive' and /var/log/syslog and
/var/log/partman that will allow use to track down the bug better.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't
fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You
may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.

Re: [Bug 54211] Re: Gparted doesn't recognize partitions properly

2007-01-30 Thread Wilson Velazquez
davmor2 escribió:
Basically yes it is a bug. However it is not a bug that the Ubuntu devs
can work on. It is a bug in the main program. In order for the gparted
team to work on it they need to know about the bug. You will therefore
need to report it to gnome.bugzilla.org. They may well ask for more
info which is why you will need to report it. I hope that makes it
 clearer for you.

Yes, it's very clear now. Even more: I think it's a bug in parted libs,
because gparted is only the graphic part of the program (basically), but
the thinking part is parted libs, reiforced with the fact that with
qtparted the problem is the same. I'll report it to gnome.bugzilla.org
anyway. Thanks.

[Bug 82381] network-admin generates chat script with invalid modem init string

2007-01-30 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

network-admin creates a chatscript that contains the modem
initialization string ATFH0M0 which is invalid. First, it is IMHO
not good to initialize the modem back to factory defaults without
prompting the user(F). Second, if there is anything after the ATF it
needs to include the profile number first. That is, ATF is valid (the
modem assumes profile 0) but ATFH0 is incorrect (because 'H' is not a
valid parameter for F)

Note that the last statement is not necessarily correct for all modems,
but I believe it is for many, and it definitely is for mine. Further,
all modems which support the AT command set should accept an ATF0 --
that is, 'ATF0H0M0' should be correct in more cases than 'ATFH0M0'

[Bug 64064] Re: Run Application dialog does not run applications in ~/bin

2007-01-30 Thread Jonh Wendell
What Sebastien means is: The problem exists, but it's not gnome-panels's
fault. It affects all (or most) gnome softwares.

He (Sebastien) will investigate and tell us how to fix it (or at least
where the problem lives).
