[Bug 135016] Evolution prevents nfs server from working when synchronising folders

2007-08-27 Thread RichardKinder
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 7.04, with all the latest updates as at 2007-08-27.

Evolution is running with an IMAP server on the back end, with the
settings and directory from an Ubuntu 6.06 install copied across into a
fresh 7.04 install.

NFS server is running on the 7.04 machine, works fine (albeit a bit slow
allowing clients to connect). Now, I had a couple of crashes on the
machine when trying to get a wireless USB driver to work, and had to
perform a hard reboot. This hard reboot probably caused something in
evolution to go bad, and when restarted after the hard reboot, will
attempt to synchronise the inbox to the server inbox ('Synchronising
folder X% complete' in the status bar). When this synchronisation is
happening, if I attempt to mount the nfs server on the evolution box
from another machine, the other machine times out with the message
'mount: RPC: Timed out'. There are no obvious error logs on the machine
that is doing the inbox synchronisation.

Please let me know what error logs you'd like me to collect. I'm
currently grabbing the output from 'CAMEL_DEBUG=all evolution' - don't
know if it'll give any insights though.

[Bug 132812] Re: When moving, renaming, deleting files, their backup copies are not modified

2007-08-27 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
Whether backup copies should be renamed with their originals depends on
the user's intent regarding the renaming. Consider the following use
case:

Apollo would like to debug his browser by resetting its configuration.
He renames ~/.browser, his browser configuration file, to
~/.browser.old. He doesn't notice that the backup copy remains in
~/.browser~ because backups are hidden in Nautilus. Apollo creates a
temporary configuration file ~/.browser and edits it several times using
gedit while debugging his browser. When he is finished, he moves the
temporary configuration file to Trash and renames ~/.browser.old back to
~/.browser. But when Apollo looks at the backup copy at ~/.browser~, he
is surprised. He expected to find the same backup copy of the original
file that was there before, but he finds instead the second latest copy
of the temporary configuration file saved by gedit.

Another use case about deleting sensitive information:

Venus saved drafts of her love letters to Apollo in her home directory.
Now that her hot-tempered husband Vulcan will come back from a journey
soon, she destroys the evidence by moving her letters to Trash and
emptying the Trash. She is not aware that the backup copies remain,
because she did not get any warning about them, and they are hidden by
default. Venus also doesn't understand the Unix permission model and her
home directory is world-readable. When Vulcan looks there, he will find
the disgraceful letters.

Depending on the user's intent, sometimes the backup files should be
treated as a single object with their originals, and sometimes not. What
bothers me is that currently the user doesn't get to choose, and that
leads to failures like those described in the use cases above.

The proper way to fix this from the usability point of view is to put
the home directory under a version control system. Until that is widely
accepted, a work-around is required. It could be a configuration option
to treat the backups and originals as a single object, or it could be a
set of warning dialogs that would notify the user that her action was
not applied to some backup copies of selected files and ask whether she
wants to rename/move/delete the backups as well.

The fix needs a bit more thinking before it can be implemented, but I
hope the problem is clear now.

This happens for example when new updates are available :
a message is displayed below the notification area and says New updates
available ... . If on this moment you quit for example gaim or skype from the

This bug is probably from the notification-deamon package but i'm not

[Bug 135051] Dutch upstream translation not included

2007-08-27 Thread Wouter Bolsterlee \(uws\)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

The Dutch translation that has been committed for quite a while to
upstream Gnome SVN has not entered Ubuntu yet. One of our translator's
has worked really hard to get the translation into shape, but it seems
(this is not the first time something like this happens) Ubuntu doesn't
care about translations.

So. PLEASE import the UPSTREAM nl.po into Ubuntu. This is extremely
demotivating for our translation team.

When 'Search all notes' is connected to a shortcut (through Preferences)

not have immediate focus, it is opened in the background.

[Bug 128232] Re: Eclipse SEGFAULTs in libgtk-x11: gtk_tooltips_set_tip()

2007-08-27 Thread Murray Cumming
This is indeed very annoying.

This is probably related to the deprecation of the GtkTooltips API in
GTK+ 2.12, in favour of the GtkTooltip (no s) API. Of course it
shouldn't cause a crash or change of behaviour. Maybe Eclipse is using
the API in some way that it shouldn't.

grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the

2007-08-27 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
