[Bug 152228] Color for IOWait hard to distinguish from Idle color

2007-10-13 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

In the preferences, the default color for Processor IOWait is #002F3D,
which is very hard to distinguish from the default color for Idle
(#00). This can lead many people to think their CPU is at idle, when
it is at max IO wait.

I recommend changing it to white (#FF)

[Bug 112665] Re: /usr/share/gnome/gnome-panelrc fails to impact theme

2007-10-13 Thread Troy James Sobotka
No.

Unfortunately, the gtkrc will not affect the panel properly. For
example, if you tried to have gtkrc draw a 'flat box' or a custom drawn
element for the panel, it will not apply using the class overrides.

Apparently the gtkrc for the panel exclusively was to handle this, but
has gotten lost somewhere along the line.

In order to fully control the panel's theming, I can see no other way to
accomplish this. The current method of introducing a panel image is
extremely kludgy and doesn't elegantly handle all of the possibilities.
As far as I can see from the research, Debian has somehow managed to
bork the file. I would need to test another variation of Linux away
from the Debian tree to be certain. The list reading however, indicates
that this might be the case.

[Bug 152271] Error when enabling visual effects in appearance preferences under Gutsy

2007-10-13 Thread Infodroid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In the Visual Effects tab of the GNOME Appearance preferences, selecting
Normal or Extra visual effects pops up an error dialog box with the
message: The Composite extension is not available.

This is not a very helpful because it does not give any further
instructions on what needs to be done to get visual effects working. For
example, Ubuntu could automatically download and configure XGL.

In addition, it is integrated into the GNOME Appearance applet so one
would EXPECT it to work out of the box, like any of the other tabs in
the applet.

If the feature is not going to be supported on my hardware, the radio
buttons should be greyed out and a suitable message displayed with the
reason why I cannot access them.

The graphics hardware is ATI Mobility Radeon X1350.

correct the aspect ratio from the GUI menu. New video thumbnails are
also distorted, however in the other direction: They become much wider

The file you've posted simply is not a jpeg-file but a windows-bmp-file
(check it e.g. via file command on command-line). Gimp tries to open it
with the jpeg-filter, but fails with the above mentioned error-message.
Rename it to rubberchicken.bmp and it will work.

[Bug 37828] Re: Text rendered incorrectly in presence of ligatures and justified text

2007-10-13 Thread Tuttle
I am unhappy with this workaround because the ligatures worked well in for
example Incspape.
As a workaround it would have been sufficient not to use DejaVu in Firefox
instead of affecting other programs that now suffer from an inferior
typographical quality when using DejaVu.

This is not a bug in DejaVu but in Firefox, Firefox has still the same
problem if a font with ligatures is used like Palatino Linotype for
example.

[Bug 152331] Re: GIMP can't open JPEG for editing

2007-10-13 Thread Reuben Firmin
Understood that it's not a valid jpeg, but I don't think completely
crapping out is the right response from Gimp. Ideally it would say this
does not look like a valid JPEG, but here it is anyway. The KDE apps
(gwenview, konqueror, etc) all open it silently, which is perhaps
correct given their use cases.

It was sourced from a google image search, and saved by firefox. The
file name is jpg online. (If you search images.google.com for rubber
chicken you should find it and be able to reproduce the issue.)

gnome-terminal switches back into full screen automatically. Now any time I
change from a tab of one profile to a tab of another, it switches to full
screen. I can create as many other tabs as I want, and switching between tabs
of the same profile does not exhibit this behaviour, only when changing to a
tab of another profile.

[Bug 12125] Re: gnome-panel's context menu is not accessible when icons are too large

2007-10-13 Thread Hans Häggström
I also ran into this problem when I resized the panel to be 30 pixel
high instead of 24 (the application launchers grew to touch each other
and cover the whole panel space)

Rather than requiring users to hunt for one-pixel spots that can open
the context menu, why not simply add the panel context menu as a nested
menu on the context menu of any items in the panel? E.g. after the
'Remove from panel' and other context menu items of a launcher, there
would be a 'Panel Menu ' item, that has a submenu with the original
panel context menu.

This is not a perfect solution, as some panel items override the default
panel item context menu with their own (e.g. the Window List), but it
would work for many cases. It's also not that elegant, as it involves a
context menu with a submenu. Some other alternatives are to enforce a
few pixel cracks between panel items so users can access the panel, or
to include some special non-removable 'panel handle' panel item for
dragging the panel and accessing the context menu of it.

[Bug 31102] Re: Can't disable tooltips

2007-10-13 Thread Mike Sola
Tooltips are the most overrated feature/gimmick ever. I'm sitting here
looking at what the tooltips say and what they are obscuring on my
desktop, and this is ridiculous. The text inside tooltip boxes is
obvious and useless 75% of the time. The firefox tab of this very
webpage has a tooltip which is the exact same text as the tab - Bug
#31102 in GNOME Panel: Can't disable Tooltips. Gee thanks.

The tooltip box covers area immediately next to where the mouse is,
which is always the most relevant part of the screen to what you are
currently doing. I am almost always MOST INTERESTED in the window
contents UNDERNEATH the tooltip. When editing source code inside an IDE,
the tooltips hide the very lines of code you are trying to change. And
you can't change the code without seeing what the current line of code
is.

Sure, it's up to me to change all my settings. Maybe linux should just
not clone Windows braindamage.

[Bug 42275] Re: on incorrect permissions dialog cancel acts like skip (asks the same question for the next item)

2007-10-13 Thread RoAblate
I can confirm this is still a problem with the LiveCD 7.10 beta.

One minor point to add - I was seeing another dialog box, with a cancel button,
underneath the error dialog box.
But the user can not get to it. It is greyed out and the button is inactive.

While admittedly I don't do UI programming, this seems like a simple bug
to kill - don't have the error dialog box block user access to the other
dialog box's button so they can cancel the whole operation. You can
still require them to handle the error box response too, if it is too
much of a pain to cancel it automatically.

[Bug 152453] Double clic on .gtp (GNOME Theme Package) files should install them

2007-10-13 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

GNOME Control Centrer provides a new MIME type (from 2.18, if I'm right)
for theme packages. This MIME type is called application/x-gnome-theme-
package and it matches to a simple .tar.gz file with the extension
changed to .gtp. The XML definition for new MIME is installed as
/usr/share/mime/packages/gnome-theme-package.xml

Now, in a proper installation of gnome-control-center (at least in my
GNOME upstream installation under /opt/ using jhbuild), double clicking
on a .gtp file should install its content in $HOME/.themes and
$HOME/.icons, and should open the Appearance capplet allowing you to
select the newly installed theme.

On Gutsy, when I double click on .gtp theme, it's opened in File Roller,
reporting an error on unknown/unmanaged file type

It seems that both /usr/share/mime/packages/gnome-theme-package.xml (the
MIME type definition) and /usr/share/applications/gnome-theme-
installer.desktop (the MIME-application association) are propertly
installed, so I've no idea (maybe not updated stuff on upgrade from
Feisty?)

[Bug 146724] Re: gnome keyring manager cannot create permanent keyrings

2007-10-13 Thread aldeby
see also http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=483288

with gnome-keyring (2.20-0ubuntu4) gutsy the problem I reported is not
yet solved, hereafter some more details I found out:

the problem described in this bug (that is very similar to the one of GNOME bug
476644) seems to be caused by the interaction between gnome-keyring-daemon and
libpam-mount, hence so few people who reported this bug (only those that use
libpam-mout to mount encrypted partitions at login experience it)!

I can say without any doubt that gnome-keyring works perfectly with default
files
/etc/pam.d/gdm
and
/etc/pam.d/login
However if at the end of these files (and specifically /etc/pam.d/gdm) I
include line @include common-pammount
and reboot I get the reported problem: no keyrings are going to be loaded! and
NetworkManager as well as samba and other applications keep asking for the
password each time. and also gnome-keyring keeps asking also for the master
password in order to create a new default keyring (which it indeed creates in
$HOME/.gnome2/keyrings directory but cannot load).

as I wrote in GNOME bug 483288 if I kill the gnome-keyring-daemon and then
start it again having pammount enabled in both mentioned files I AM able to
bring the keyring working again as expected.
Unfortunately I should do this (killall then restart) at every reboot.

this is just to add that when string '@include common-pammount' is

+
+ As you can read in October 14 post hereafter the problem seems strictly
+ related to the use of libpam-mount together with gnome-keyring.

If I open that applet it shows only session keyring, if I manually try
to create another keyring (such as session or login) it first lists it
in keyrings list however when I click on the keyring a window pops up

[Bug 152228] Re: Color for IOWait hard to distinguish from Idle color

2007-10-13 Thread Greg Grossmeier
Thanks for the suggestion.

But this may actually be on purpose. I/O Wait means that the processor
is not doing anything, because it is waiting for some I/O to finish.
The CPU *could* be doing work, but it isn't. So, from the processor's
viewpoint (which is what the applet is showing), it is idle.

[Bug 152083] Re: gnome-terminal won't launch

2007-10-13 Thread remarK-
It occurs at all levels of visual effects, both off and on high and my
video card is an nvidia geforce 6800. I tried to install the nivida
drivers, but to no avail. As far as --sync goes, I haven't been at my
computer in a few days (out of town) and I haven't been able to try. If
any light, as far as what to expect and what --sync will do, that would
help me further this investigation.

Thanks for the attention to this matter.
