[Bug 160410] Hangs and needs to be forcibly closed

2007-11-06 Thread Jai Harrison
Public bug reported:

Now here's an interesting bug that I encountered when taking screenshots
of specific windows and then opening my home folder where I had saved
them. Nautilus completely hangs and, after a little work, I realised it
was because of one of the images file names.

I can confirm that a PNG with the following filename causes Nautilus to
hang and that the only resolution is to rename the file in the terminal.
(mv filename newname)

Screenshot-mIRC - [#zfgc (Windfyre, Solly) [20] [+nrt]: -=#=Z=F=G=C=-
http:--www.zfgc.com- -=- Happy Non-Halloween! -=- Rules: http:--www.zfgc
.com-chat- -=- http:--www.pp].png

I can't say exactly which character causes the problem (and I have tried
to rule it out) but anyone can easily reproduce this and see for
themselves.

[Bug 138408] Re: gutsy: gdm greeter is crashing

2007-11-06 Thread nardis_Miles1
Same problem. I just wanted to add that kdm is another workaround. I'm
running radeon xpress 200M with a compiled ATI proprietary driver (v
8-40) on a compaq presario v5000. Finally, it seems very strange that
compiz is now required for the Ubuntu desktop.

[Bug 155732] Re: Leaving long message in gnome-screensaver locks system

2007-11-06 Thread kimbja98
Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce this bug with any reliability, so
it could be dependent on a number of other factors such as free memory
space or currently running programs. The screensaver does eventually
return but upon exiting (by typing in password), Xorg uses 100% CPU and
it's very difficult to use programs during this period. It can stay
that way for a long time but can recover. I'd therefore suggest that
this bug be closed as it's unlikely a user would find him/herself in
this situation (unless you have colleagues who'd find it funny which is
how I came across this). I generated the text by typing in lol,
copy/pasting recursively untill I was pasting many paragraphs
continuously for 30 seconds by holding ctrl+v.

[Bug 160345] feature request: conditional statements in recurring calendar events

2007-11-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

when I am setting up a calendar event to be recurring, I noticed a
section for exceptions, however it is not practical to put in the date
of every exception in quite a few circumstances, so I was wondering if
you could implement conditional statements, to explain consider the
following situation:

I am setting up events to remind me to take out the trash on mondays,
however if there happens to be a holiday they won't pick up but will do
it the next day and since holidays are all day events I could just set
it to be the next day when there is an all day event on monday. I'm sure
there are other conditions you could set for it, but I can't think of
any right now

[Bug 156292] Re: I get visual notifications of new mail despite requesting no notifications

2007-11-06 Thread Simon Bridge
Just for fun, I had the same thing - except it was persistent until clicked.
Checking, I found:

$ gconftool-2 -R /apps/evolution/mail/notification
 notification = true
 blink-status-icon = true

So I did:

$ gconftool-2 -s /apps/evolution/mail/notification/notification -t bool false
$ gconftool-2 -s /apps/evolution/mail/notification/blink-status-icon -t bool
false

So now it reads:

$ gconftool-2 -R /apps/evolution/mail/notification
 notification = false
 blink-status-icon = false

I am getting e-mail notification, but it doesn't flash...
Running Ubuntu 7.10 + Evo 2.12.0

Removing the notification thing from the panel results in a popup with
the message you have received x mail appearing under the main menu.

[Bug 160362] Ubuntu has some information for you.

2007-11-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Sometimes after upgrading system, an icon appears in the notification bar.
A light bulb, if I recall correctly. With the icon comes the following message:
Ubuntu has some information for you. (or something like that)
It might have something to do with restarting Firefox after upgrade, but I
cannot say for sure.

I was watching a real user (not interested in hacking) use Ubuntu
when this happened. The feature seems to cause a problem in user
experience.

- Why does Ubuntu suddenly have some information for me?
- I didn't ask for any information.
- (notification ignored)

The feature seems to affect user as, if getting some information
would be a use case. The message is similar to software that
recommends you some entertainment, or advertises stuff to you.

User does not realize the information is a system message or
relevant in any way. It is just some information. People encounter
all kinds of useless information everyday. Why would this
some information be important to the user.

I think this would be fixed by telling the user something like
Maintenance required or Ubuntu needs your attention.
That kind of a message tells user that it is Ubuntu that has
a problem the user could solve. Not the other way around.
Maybe an apology for the inconvenience would also be
appropriate.

[Bug 160445] Tali 'straight' algorythm error

2007-11-06 Thread Vadim Khatkovsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

1. As I know, the 'Large Straight' game is 2 3 4 5 6 , and the 'Small Straight'
game is 1 2 3 4 5.
But Tali allows entering 1 2 3 4 5 for Large and 2 3 4 5 6 for Small. Moreover,
sometimes it allows entering smth. like 3 3 4 5 6 for Large and Small
Straights. Please fix.

2. Sometimes I see in computer opponent's lists written 100 or 150 for
'five of the kind'. Is it correct?

[Bug 73564] Re: [shares-admin] Sharing a folder does not create SMB account

2007-11-06 Thread Lealcy B. Junior
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 14774 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/14774

Windows users cannot access my shared folders. Always they try appears a
logon window, but it don't accept nothing.

The smbpasswd -a returns the output below:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# smbpasswd -a anyuser
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Failed to modify password entry for user anyuser

And the guest ok = yes flag in the smb.conf does not take effect.

There's anywhere a comprehensive tutorial to share some folder with a
windows user under SMB? Otherwise it's a dead feature.

[Bug 3923] Re: Cannot change default character encoding

2007-11-06 Thread Haz
A permanent config for the character set would be very useful. It has long been
a feature of PuTTY (Terminal Translation Chr Set).
It would be best set in Profiles (similar to PuTTY's saved session) rather than
globally, because its often required only for some specific purpose.

The only way I have been able to do this so far, as suggested in
http://osdir.com/ml/gnome.os.redhat/2002-10/msg00022.html, is to first setup
the required locale eg: via:
$ sudo locale-gen en_GB.ISO-8859-15
so that the new locale is listed by
$ locale -a
(as 'en_GB.iso885915').

Then I start GT like:-
$ env LC_CTYPE=en_GB.ISO-8859-15 gnome-terminal  ...  --disable-factory

But some of my Ubuntu's are resistant to enabling or using the new locale.
Although it is listed by 'locale -a' as above, when I try to start GT as
described above I get: gnome-terminal: 7773: ... locale not supported by C
library.
And yet I can select the same chr set from GT's Terminal Set Chr Encoding
menu!?
One of my GT's also shows its 'Current Locale' as 'ANSI_X3.4-1968' even though
this is not listed by 'locale -a' at all!?

Any helpful comments about these problems would be much appreciated.

2007-11-06 Thread Geoff Goehle
Update: I did a fresh install of Xubuntu 7.10 from live cd and had the
same problem, with the same solution.

Speaking of solutions. Here is a detailed set of instructions.

Edit /etc/init.d/gdm using your favorite text editor (backup first!).

Now between the lines:

stop)
  log_begin_msg Stopping GNOME Display Manager...

add the following:

stop)
  usplash_down
  log_begin_msg Stopping GNOME Display Manager...

Then save. Now the splash screen should start immediatelly after gnome
shuts down.

Although I (think) I originated this bug, there is (for me) a perfectly
acceptable workaround, which is to have two panels. One on the left hand
screen and another on the right. Then I distribute the things I want
between them.

So, I can't help but have some sympathy with its importance being low.

Also, I suspect that (part of) the problem is also the thing that
prevents a program from occupying the whole of *both* screens, instead
of just the screen that you are on, when you maximise. I think that this
is much better behaviour.

What you lose on the swings you, may, gain on the roundabouts...

[Bug 24070] Re: notification daemon should postpone showing the bubbles if applications are in fullscreenmode (instead of not showing them at all)

2007-11-06 Thread Torsten Bronger
What is meant with notification icon?

Anyway, with the instant messanger Gajim, you get little popup windows
in the lower right corner of the screen when a buddy becomes online (if
Gajim was configured for this). However, running one app in fullscreen
mode -- even if its window is not active -- prevents those popups from
showing up. I hear the audio signal for a buddy becoming online but no
visual notification who it is.

I consider this incorrect bahaviour, even if those notifications would
be delayed.

[Bug 160410] Re: Hangs and needs to be forcibly closed

2007-11-06 Thread Jai Harrison
I followed the instructions however the problem does NOT occur when run
through gdb. Odd, huh?

I looked into it a bit myself though and I've discovered the bug only
seems to appear in the user's home folder. I can view folders containing
a file with that filename normally (including sub-folders of the user's
home) provided they're not the home folder.

It always occurs in the home folder though, with that filename. Try this
to reproduce it.

[1] Go to Places - Home Folder
[2] If you don't already have a file called Screenshot-mIRC - [#zfgc
(Windfyre, Solly) [20] [+nrt]: -=#=Z=F=G=C=- http:--www.zfgc.com- -=- Happy
Non-Halloween! -=- Rules: http:--www.zfgc.com-chat- -=- http:--www.pp].png
then rename an existing one to that now.

Hm, I notice Exaile was just added to the list of affected projects, but
we already track this as bug 135930 (which has no activity because it's
deep in our too hard basket).

Assuming this is a client issue instead of a GStreamer one, any Exaile-

bug.

Should I mark this Closed-Invalid or should I mark #135930 a dupe?

[Bug 54091] Re: Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications

2007-11-06 Thread Vadim Peretokin
Yes it was for me. Somehow the font settings weren't being applied to
Firefox; I tinkered with them some and then it worked fine.

I don't have the steps for it though, sorry.

[Bug 160565] Rhythmbox Volume Control is laggy

2007-11-06 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Sebastian Bacher asked me to open a new bug report in bug 40813:

On Ubuntu Gutsy, when I move the volume control slider in Rhythmbox it
takes about a second for the volume to change.

Here are the soundcards of two diffent machines with the same problem:

00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7
Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

It is just a guess that the volume control might by applied at buffer
push time, instead of buffer pull - which would explain the lag of
approx. buffer size.

Gnome main volume control works as expected.

** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 131530] Re: 'Browse device...' in the bluetooth applet is useless without gnome-vfs-obexftp

2007-11-06 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Clusty : Some cell phones doesn't support browsing. Pairing and browsing
are different things. I suggest you to look at the documentation of your
cell phone or to test your cell phone on another computer to see if you
can browse files on it, so you'll be sure that your problem is or isn't
really a bug. Also, if you get problems with browsing, you can look if
you can find another bug report which describe the same problem than
yours ( because this one is more about not-installed-by-default gnome-
vfs-obexftp ).

Don't forget that you must install gnome-vfs-obexftp in order to browse
devices.

[Bug 104013] Re: System monitor: Resources displays 99% to 100% cpu

2007-11-06 Thread Jesse Aldridge
I was having the same problem, but brettalton's explanation helped understand
it.
I hadn't realized the system monitor only showed My Processes by default.
I think most semi-technical people like me would have this problem.

Maybe the view process options should be moved outside of the main
menu?

There's room for a drop-down box on the left side in the same row as the
End Process button.
