[Bug 201701] [NEW] Greeter appears to be crashing

2008-03-13 Thread Taleman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Installed XUbuntu 8.04 Alpha 6 from CD. After upgrade can't log to X
Window, GDM login screen shows briefly but then dialog box pops up
stating Greeter appears to be crashin ...,.

Clicking OK only makes it do this repeatedly.

Tried to change gdmgreeter to gdmlogin in files in directory /etc/gdm, no help.
Googling for hints did not turn up usefull stuff,
GtkModulesList=gail:atk-bridge:/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libdwellmouselistener:/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libkeymouselistener
is already commented out
[http://liltux.wordpress.com/2007/09/05/how-to-fix-the-error-the-greeter-application-appears-to-be-crashing-in-ubuntu/]

Can't right now provide more exact info, I can no longer log in even
from text mode console.

I tried booting with 2.6.24-11 kernel, booting stops and last line on console is
* Starting system log daemon

Machine is ASUS A7V motherboard, AMD Duron 750 MHz, 384 MB memory, Elsa
Synergy display card, two IDE hard disks.

[Bug 197669] Re: Could not open resource for reading YouTube+TotemPythonPlugin

2008-03-13 Thread fuoco
No I believe it's not related to confirmation of age.
Rather I suspect it might be related to gnomevfssrc gstreamer element - which
also causes problem with gnash and youtube.
I have tried to force giosrc instead of gnomevfssrc - that made gnash work very
very well, but with totem it fails with a different error this time:

The patch from Fedora has been applied upstream, and is included in libX11

So have we picked the best patch available? Considering that people say

The display card seemed cause problems. Changing display to anything better
than 800x600 with 8-bit color prevented X from starting.
Otherwise system was usable, but after dist-upgrade things got really messed
up.

I installed this 8.04 to check if my USB WLAN would work with 2.6.24 kernel.
That did work without any extra fiddling after I turned on my wireless access
point.
Now it seems I have to install again, can't do nothing now because can not
login to XUbuntu. Starting with 2.6.24-11 kernel I get:
init: tty1 main process (4229) terminated with status 11
init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
when trying to log in from console.

Am I missing something in the log there.

Could others post the similar log? I've looked through the GPM code and
it isn't obvious how it could be hibernating after a suspend. I'm
suspect to believe it is at a lower level in the stack. (i.e. the

[Bug 51662] Re: Runaway leak in composer

2008-03-13 Thread pekka72
I see this bug quite often. And it's very annoying when I am on my
laptop as I really have to switch it off to get out. ctrl-alt-backspace
won't work. I just see the memory raising and raising.

A general pattern is that it only happens when
1) I have a paragraph containing names of C++ classes with capitals in the
middle of the word and
2) I then try to change the text in the middle of the paragraph. I believe it's
when it tries to do the line wrapping that it fails.

An example is what I was typing just now:

Because it's an instance of FilterDesktop and not CombineParticles.
In FilterDesktop there's only one filter applied while in
CombineParticles there are three.

Then I wanted to come back to In FilterDesktop and change it to
FilterDesktop does only filter and therefore. I believe it's when I
accidentally removed a space and then had FilterDesktop does only
filterthere's only one (no space between filter and there) that
evolution started to leak.

One additional hint may be that I have english, french and german
spellcheck on all time.

[Bug 201701] Re: Greeter appears to be crashing

2008-03-13 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

So, ownership of .Xauthority file in my home directory went to root,
I've no idea why. Can it be the reason of switching to /tmp/.gdm* files?
Now, I deleted /tmp/.gdm* files, and reown to .Xauthority to myself.
However this time, I get this:

Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyxterm Xt error: Can't open display: :0.0

[Bug 201679] Re: Flash video (*.flv) defined with incorrect MIME type

2008-03-13 Thread Nathan de Vries
The major problem for me is uploading *.flv files via Firefox to media-
centric web services, which then need to special case application/x
-flash-video as a video format (as opposed to just checking for
video/*). Looks like this problem has also impacted OggConvert:

[Bug 201728] [NEW] Drag and drop error on wallpaper in gnome-appearance-properties

2008-03-13 Thread fouck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I try to drag and drop a wallpaper from gnome-appearance-properties to
the desktop. Then I get an error popup.

By launching the gnome-appearance-properties applets through term I can
the the following message when I begin drag 'n drop :

(gnome-appearance-properties:24549): Gtk-CRITICAL **:
gtk_icon_view_drag_begin: assertion `item != NULL' failed

I don't know if it is normal, because the feature is not yet implemented and
developers like better to keep drag 'n drop activated.
In this case, I don't think it is a really good choice (the user could think it
is a bug like i am now doing).

If anyone could give me more informations about this. Waiting for a
response I will try to investigate in the gnome-appearance-properties
code.

[Bug 175133] Re: Last.fm gives 'Handshake failed' error

2008-03-13 Thread Mads Peter Rommedahl
Confirming

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

  In Rhythmbox 0.11.2 in Gutsy I enabled the Last.fm plugin. I didn't
  configure anything, since I don't have a Last.fm account. When I then
open the Last.fm page in Rhythmbox, enter 'keane' in the 'Similar
artists' field, and then click Play, I get a 'Handshake error' and a
'Couldn't start playback' messagebox. Result: it doesn't work.

On the Last.fm website I can play songs without an account, so I don't
think an account is necessary for this functionality. If it nevertheless
is, it should be mentioned when enabling the plugin.
+
+ Step-by-step to reproduce:
+ I) Start Rhythmbox 0.11.2
+ II) Enable the Last.fm plugin (but leave the username/password blank)
+ III) In the Last.fm page enter 'keane' in the 'Similar artists' field and
click Play.
+ IV) An error should occur - either with or without a pop-up message. Either
way, no sound is playing.

Absolutly no problem at all. The patch has been incorporated in

Thanks !

[Bug 201593] Re: gnome-display-properties cannot put monitors beside each other, no other tool to do this available to users

2008-03-13 Thread Mike MacCana
I'm aware that 'Screen Resolution' has never done this. However Hardy
will not have the 'Screens and Graphics' available to users, where this
functionality was set up, as 'Screen Resolution' replaces it and
according to Bryce the older tool will not appear in the menus.

Ie. Hardy no longer has a user accessable tool to set up multihead,
which is a regression. A tool is being replaced by another tool which
does not entirely work as a substitute, and functionality is being lost,
hence non wishlist.

[Bug 187524] Re: [hardy] screen lights up when lid is closed

2008-03-13 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Here it is.

As far as I can tell, there's some kind of event that's triggered after
the lid is closed that lights up the screen. If I turn the screen off
using xset with a delay (something like sleep 5; xset dpms force off)
and close the screen before the delay is up, it stays off.

[Bug 18361] Re: Odd selection launchers/menu

2008-03-13 Thread Klaus G.
Just commented out:

-- button-widget.c --
401: || GTK_WIDGET_HAS_FOCUS (widget)
467-483: if (GTK_WIDGET_HAS_FOCUS (widget)) {...}

-- panel-menu-bar.c --
298: if (GTK_WIDGET_HAS_FOCUS (menubar)) ...

First removes the launcher's highlight when clicking on the menu-bar (still
highlighted when pointing the mouse over the launcher).
Second removes the launcher's dotted focus border when clicking on the menu-bar
(completely removes it - that's maybe not wanted).
Third removes the menu-bar's dotted focus border when clicking on the menu-bar
(completely removes it - that's maybe not wanted).

As I don't know how the panel is supposed to work, this is just a
workaround for my pleasure.

[Bug 181172] Re: totem dumps core shortly after startup

2008-03-13 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could
test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of
Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your
help.

[Bug 179323] Re: g-p-m starts ignoring the sleep key after a while

Here's the log. It's taken at the time when Fn-F4 still works; I
suppose it would be more interesting to do it after it stops working.
It's been a while since I last encountered that bug.

2008-03-13 Thread unggnu
I can confirm this. I am not sure now which packages causes it but it is
not an only compiz problem since it appears with the vesa driver too. I
am going to test another desktop like fluxbox or something like that. I
guess it has something to do with the gnome-settings-daemon or the
panel.
