[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs
Peter Wuertz has made some good suggestions. Why haven't they been considered? Peter said: (a) if backup enabled: - copy, not move the original file to a backup file - reset file pointer, overwrite the original file in-place (b) if backup disabled: - reset file pointer, overwrite the original file in-place or just tell the user that gedit is not able to backup the file and proceed with method (b) anyways if the user agrees My opinion is that the developers don't like the idea of copying the complete file as a backup because copying isn't "efficient." However, that is a poor reason for not resolving this bug. Just do as Peter suggests and make a copy of the file! Many, many editors do that already and the performance hit is not noticeable at all. (Other editors give the user config options, as Peter also suggests.) Please fix this! Like many people have said, ALL my documents are on Windows shares. [Bug 206212] Re: Cannot enable desktop effects without ati restricted driver
Yes, this seems to happen for all ATI graphics cards now. It must be because although the open source ATI drivers support compiz on many cards (actually it supports it much better on my card than the proprietary driver, which has all sorts of problems), ALL ATI cards are now blacklisted by compiz (see bug 201330). You can enable compiz by editing /usr/bin/compiz and removing the check for ATI drivers, but gnome-appearance-properties *still* forces you to install the restricted drivers before it will run compiz, which I think goes against the Ubuntu philosophy. There should be a way to configure gnome-appearance-properties so it does one of the following: 1) For whitelisted ATI cards, it should just run compiz. 2) If it's unsure about the card, it should warn that there may be problems and ask if you want to try anyway. If it works, it should remember this for next time so it doesn't have to keep asking. ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None => gnome-control-center -- Cannot enable desktop effects without ati restricted driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/206212 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 208038] Codepage / Encoding issue
In the strace there was a mention of some files with the name of Sigur Rós in them. The file system is UTF-8, but for some reason these files names have ISO8859-1 or Windows 1252 encoding. This usually makes ls and other command line tools just show "?" for the non-latin characters. I tried moving this directory out of the path, and Rhythmbox no longer segfaults! [Bug 208038] [NEW] Rhythmbox + SSHFS = SEGFAULT
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch) Release:8.04 (updated per March 28) Rhythmbox 0.11.5-0ubuntu1 I mount a directory through sshfs like this: sshfs $MUSICSERVER:mnt/mp3 /mnt/timbuktu_mp3/ -p $SSH_PORT I then open up Rhythmbox. I would expect Rhythmbox to ignore the directory (since I haven't imported it, and it's not a subdir), and show me my library. What happens is that it segfaults. Almost exactly the same behavious was experienced on Ubuntu 7.04 with the use of mp3fs - another FUSE file system, but this was fixed (or at least works) in Ubuntu 8.04. ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Rhythmbox + SSHFS = SEGFAULT https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/208038 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 206212] [NEW] Cannot enable desktop effects without ati restricted driver
You have been subscribed to a public bug: After installing Hardy 8.04 beta (i386 -shows as generic), I had full desktop effects. I did not enable the restricted drivers! I use a Radeon 9600XT and know the restricted drivers don't allow for desktop effects. I selected the desktop effects to "none" to check something, and now the system try's to download and enable the restricted ATI driver when I try to re-enable the desktop effects. [Bug 208026] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties asks for reboot if you cancel ATI driver install
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center gnome-appearance-properties can't tell if fglrx drivers were installed correctly or not, and asks you to reboot if they weren't installed. To reproduce: 1. Run gnome-appearance-properties on a system with an ATI card. 2. Select 'normal' effects. 3. jockey asks 'do you want to install the fglrx drivers'. 4. Select cancel. 5. gnome-appearance-properties says that you should reboot the computer and try again when the new drivers are available. Note that this *probably* also happens if you have Synaptic open and tell jockey to install the drivers (as reported in bug 202898). jockey will fail since another package manager is running, but gnome- appearance-properties still thinks the drivers were installed.
