[Bug 229172] [NEW] Rhythmbox 0.11.5 wont play audio unless another app starts audio first

2008-05-11 Thread Yanni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Upon restarting Ubuntu Hardy, 8.04, if I launch RB 0.11.5 and ask it to play a
mp3, it says it has an unknown error and is unable to play.
If i use another app, eg, vlc, and try to play a track it works, then if i use
RB, it works.

It seems that RB cant open the audio path to the soundcard ? and another
app has to establish it first ?

[Bug 229187] [NEW] Evolution mailing list does not render accents correctly

2008-05-11 Thread sebek
Public bug reported:

Under Ubuntu Gutsy, evolution 2.12.1, env var LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8

When creating a mailing list (shift+ctrl+L from the address book) and
you select a accentuated name from your address book to be included in
the mailing list, it is not rendered correctly in the contact selector
not in the mailing list view.

Instead of displaying :
Sébastien ABEILLE [EMAIL PROTECTED]
it is displaying :
=?ISO-8859-1?Q?S=E9bastien?= ABEILLE [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Screenshot attached.

There are no problems to render a accentuated name in a contact entry,
problem is only with mailing lists.

I had a look at #146184 which is also a rendering problem in mailing
list display, but with html special characters, fixed in 2.21.90, which
I can not test currently.

Would be nice if someone could try to reproduce it with Hardy see if it
is still there.

[Bug 210468] Re: try to access a .Trash-$USER directory on autofs mounts

2008-05-11 Thread Steve Langasek
Looking into every mount point for .Trash directories is not a bug.
Looking is the only way to see if there are contents there that should
be displayed in the system trash can! (As Sebastien notes, the trash
can is shown as the union of all the per-filesystem trashcans, so the
only way to ensure all trash contents are displayed correctly is by
checking each mount point.)

b) and c) are certainly bugs, I agree. unfortunately, b) may be an
inherent conflict between how gvfsd-trash and autofs work; gvfsd-trash
uses inotify to monitor the trash can, which means the reference count
on the mount point never drops to zero and autofs doesn't unmount. c)
should be straightforward to fix.

d) is very odd indeed. Does running ls /home have this same effect?
The last time I used autofs this was not the case, so I wonder what's
happening to cause this.

[Bug 229163] Re: gstreamer-properties crashes

2008-05-11 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-05-11 Thread Wydarr
Same thing happened for me: totem is uninterruptible, I have run a movie for
about 10 minutes or so, but what I did, was I was constantly searching (using
the mouse scroll wheel) for a specific part of the movie. After I've found it,
I watched it (for like 2 - 3 minutes or so), and then closed totem. And ever
since (it's been more than 12 hours) processor use is constantly at 100% (with
totem having a variable percentage depending on what other things I do on the
system) and system load at around 10.
The process name is:
10975 ?DNl 649:25 totem
file:///media/Iomega/Seriale/Kyle%20XY/Kyle%20XY%20-%20Season%201/Kyle%20XY%20-%201x02%20Sleepless%20in%20Seattle.avi
Notice that the movie runs from an external HDD, which has never been
disconnected, and that has NTFS file system.
Hope this helps.

[Bug 224448] Re: [hardy] [nVidia] White screen after resume from suspend

2008-05-11 Thread Olivier Cortès
I can confirm this on a Dell Precision M4300 (nVIDIA Quadro FX-360M with
nvidia-glx-new), up-to-date Hardy. Suspend/resume cycles work (many
times), but at ~90% of resumes I get a completely white screen. I can
type my password (sometimes I must click anywhere in the screen to grab
focus) and the screen unlocks as expected.

[Bug 223164] Re: Gnome freezes with drag / drop to 2 different windows

2008-05-11 Thread nexus
Ok, I found the way to force it:
- open a nautilus window (change from home to another directory)
- open a second nautilus window (don't change directory)
- resize the second window
- click on a file in the second window and move it - crash

I don't know if the directory changes are required. I tried it three
times now, two times I had to hard shut down (by pressing the power
button 4 secs), one time the x-server crashed and restarted
automatically (3. time, see below).

[Bug 229197] [NEW] rhythmbox notifications don't show album cover

[Hardy] Rhythmbox notifications of currently playing song don't show album
cover although it is available. Strange is that this album cover is displayed

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-05-11 Thread Wydarr
P.S.1 When I tried to restart, the computer locked and had to do a cold reset.
Probably it couldn't get the process out of the memory and refused to restart
the machine. Before pressing the restart button, I tried to check whether they
keyboard is working (press NumLock) but it didn't.
P.S.2 After the restart, tried to run the same flic, but didn't cause any
problem now.
P.S.3 Speaking for myself, I am not very proficient in computers, so if the
devs have any tasks that I can do on the computer when this happens again, that
might help them determine the cause, please, post here, because I check this
thread regularly.

Thanks and keep up the excellent job you have done so far!

[Bug 61871] Re: Documents opening in presentation mode

2008-05-11 Thread ViktorNagy
On Gutsy (Evince 2.20.1) the bug still exists.

I've found it by:
* start downloading a pdf file and select it to open in evince
* before download finishes, switch to evince and open a file in presentation
mode

Once the downloaded file opens it will be in presentation mode even
taking over your actual reading.

The procedure described above (switching the workspace) gave the bug as
well.

[Bug 117333] Re: tab options not working (from commandline)

2008-05-11 Thread Scott Scriven
BTW, this issue also exists in 2.16.1-0ubuntu1 (edgy) and
2.18.2-0ubuntu1 (gutsy). It probably is in every version of Ubuntu,
since the upstream bug was opened in 2002, and it's not fixed yet.

It doesn't sound like upstream has any interest in fixing it.
Apparently the --tab option was intended only to allow more than one
tab in a new window; it was not supposed to open a new tab in an
existing window.

There are two ways to fix this:

  - Changing the wording of --help to indicate the actual purpose of --tab.
  - Make --tab do what --help says it does.

The second option is probably better, but it may be hard to get the
change accepted upstream.

Could it be you shared the folder first by using the root account?
Be sure that the root account doesn't share the folder or you will still

To check you can use 'sudo nautilus' and go to the shared folder.

Thank you. The upstream bug reports are helpful.

Both the bug reports are quite old but with no fix downstream yet. So
I'm not sure when we could see this in [K]ubuntu.

I hope we all are aware of tmpreaper. It cleans files/folders in /tmp based on
how old they are.
Probably, till it gets fixed, I'll use something similar to it. TrashReaper?

Should a TrashReaper kind of approach be proposed for the next release?

[Bug 229228] [NEW] Nautilus Does Not Search USB Drive but Kfind Works Well

2008-05-11 Thread Oh01
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hello,

I have Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) fully updated (not upgraded to Hardy yet for
other reasons - I like Firefox 2.x). I run it on a Dell Dimension 4700
desktop. I also have a Western Digital (WD) My Book 1 TB (one
terabyte) external USB Hard Disk (this model has no other connectors,
only USB). Applications System Tools Storage shows SCSI device: scsi
8: Vendor: WD, Model: 10EACS External. It uses the vfat file system. It
auto-mounts on start-up, restart, resume from suspend or resume from
hibernate, or when I plug it in I can read to it and write from it
without problems (see Note below, though). My main problem is that when
I try to search it for files in Nautilus using the Search icon or Go
Search for Files, I always get no results. For example, searching for
*.AVI or *.avi brings up nothing, though the files are there. Nautilus
does not even seem to try to read the USB drive, as it does not wake
up (it is on standby whenever it is not used for a few minutes).

The same goes for Places Search for files from the top GNOME panel. No
matter what options I select, either Name contains, or Name matches
regular expression: *.AVI or *.avi does not find any files. At least
this utility seems to try to read the USB drive as it wakes up, but
the search finds nothing.

I keep my family photos and videos on the USB HD (no room on internal HD
-- yes, I know, I take lots of photos and videos). Being unable to
search this drive was a major inconvenience when trying to find in which
folder I had a particular video, for example.

I thought that maybe the factory-default volume name for the USB drive,
My Book -- note the space between the words -- was the problem, as
some command-line utilities cannot handle names with spaces. I changed
the name using mtools to MY_BOOK and re-mounted it, as per
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RenameUSBDrive . But Nautilus
searching still did not work.

After lots of Googling, I finally found a workaround: use Kfind instead
of Nautilus for searching USB drives. (Thanks go to Shudder from the
Arstechnica OpenForum at
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/96509133/m/211008250931?r=211008250931#211008250931
)

Kfind works properly (and quickly) using the same search (*.AVI). It
finds video files in any folder or sub-folder on the USB drive. Why does
Nautilus not do the same?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Note: Trying to Right click the USB drive Unmount Volume from the
Desktop results in the icon disappearing, but then I get an error
message: Cannot unmount volume: Cannot unmount the volume MY_BOOK
Details: Cannot remove directory. I don't know if this is related to the
above issue with Nautilus.

I am using Hardy Heron. I was copying a large set of files over my home
network when I received an error that the target directory was full. The
only options I was given at this time were: Close, Skip, and Skip All.
Though unfavorable, only the Close option was useful. In this situation
gvfs should let the user to redirect the pasting of files - chose a
different target directory to continue moving files. It could be called
Redirect.

1) Using Ubuntu 8.04
2) Package 0.2.3-0ubuntu4
3) Target directory of pasting was full, expected to seamlessly continue
pasting elsewhere
4) gvfs gives option to Close, and useless option to Skip, and Skip All.

[Bug 229228] Re: Nautilus Does Not Search USB Drive but Kfind Works Well

2008-05-11 Thread Oh01
I should have mentioned that both in Nautilus and Places Search for
files, I did select Look in folders: MY_BOOK. Still no search results,
though.

Also, Nautilus can browse and view the files on the USB HD without
problems. It's only the Search that does not work.

[Bug 229228] Re: Nautilus Does Not Search USB Drive but Kfind Works Well

2008-05-11 Thread Oh01
Hmm.. When using Places Search for files in MY_BOOK, I do get results
if I don't use wild cards, e.g. if I just search for Name contains: AVI
without the *. at the front. Not intuitive to people who are used to
wild cards for partial file names, but it does work. (I know, strictly
speaking, Name contains implies all the wild cards, but the program is
not forgiving if the user does not realize this right away.)

Unfortunately, Name matches regular expression: *.AVI still does not
work.

Also in Nautilus, Search: AVI in MY_BOOK brings up an error:

The folder contents could not be displayed.

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote
application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy
blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection
was broken.

[Bug 229228] Re: Nautilus Does Not Search USB Drive but Kfind Works Well

2008-05-11 Thread Oh01
Kfind is not installed in Ubuntu by default (though it may be in Kubuntu). To
add Kfind to Ubuntu, got to System Administration Synaptic package manager
(enter administrative password) Search: kfind
Check mark it, select Apply and wait for the process to finish.

You can add a quick shortcut to Kfind by Right-clicking on an empty spot
on the top GNOME panel, Add to panel Custom application launcher
Name: kfind, Command: kfind, click OK. You now have a Kfind icon on the
panel. The icon is even nice-looking (in the default Human desktop theme
at least): a computer with a magnifying glass, as proper for finding
tools.

[Bug 229223] [NEW] Find breaks on ~/.gvfs directory

2008-05-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When running find in a particular way there is an error reading the
~/.gvfs directory and find bombs.

sudo find / -name '.*something.*'

produces:

find: /home/myboxoftricks/.gvfs: Permission denied

The problem:

* doesn't happen without the sudo
* doesn't happen without the -name
* doesn't happen when ~/.gvfs isn't on the search path

so basically when .gvfs in on the search path, and you use sudo and the name
switch, find bombs.

Same problem is being reported with other distros. It seems to be a Gnome
glitch.
Not good that root's file access is denied.

[Bug 156226] Re: Screen is not locked when laptop lid is closed

2008-05-11 Thread zoidberg
I confirm this bug on Hardy.

Pedro's solution worked for me too, but I see no reason why this option
isn't available in the Screensaver or power-management dialog.

(That said, I still don't know why the gnome-screensaver-preferences
dialog doesn't offer all the extensive settings available in
xscreensaver... One day, I might be switching to KDE completely...)
