[Bug 208467] Re: Camera Device button Open F-spot Photo Manager doesn't work

2008-05-17 Thread Michael Ellerman
I did a bit of digging, and wrote a systemtap script to work out what
was happening ... and I think I know what's going on.

Nautilus is launching f-spot, this is configured in from
System-Preferences-File Management, then the Media tab. There is a
drop-down next to Photos, which lets you choose what to do when photos
are found.

On my system there are five options, ask, do nothing, open folder and
Open F-Spot Photo Manager and Open F-Spot Photo Manager. The trick
is that you need to use the second option - it corresponds to
/usr/share/applications/f-spot-import.desktop, which passes the --import
option.

So problem number one is that /usr/share/applications/f-spot-
import.desktop and /usr/share/applications/f-spot.desktop, both have the
name F-Spot Photo Manager - so there's no way to determine which is
which in the Nautilus configuration. That is an f-spot bug. It's fairly
easy to fix just by changing the name to F-Spot Import or something.

The second bug is that f-spot --import with a file:// URI doesn't seem to work.
I can see this from my stap script:
17432 exec f-spot /usr/lib/f-spot/f-spot.exe --import file:///media/disk

Which does open f-spot, and even opens the import window, but no
directory is selected. I have to manually select my disk from the drop-
down menu.

Using f-spot --import /media/disk works fine. That also seems to be a
bug in f-spot.

[Bug 231302] [NEW] Easy GNOME Nautilus GUI to synchronize data between a remote computer and a local directory

2008-05-17 Thread Sebastien CELLES
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

Hello,

Nautilus provide a very usefull interface to mount remote directory
(for example a samba/cifs share)

But sometimes it's very usefull to have a backup of the data
(for example when you are offline).
With Windows XP or Vista (at least Professional version) for example
you can right click on a Network drive to synchronize it.
I think it could be very usefull to provide a GUI for such a feature.
Unison, for example, could be used.
I'm talking about Unison (instead of rsync) because it's bidirectionnal.

Best regards

[Bug 231302] Re: Easy GNOME Nautilus GUI to synchronize data between a remote computer and a local directory

2008-05-17 Thread Sebastien CELLES
I forget to say that the last version of Unison now provide a GTK2 UI so a
piece of code can probably be reused
Moreover an other feature can be add :
detect if user is online or offline (in fact for each share, we have to
detect if this share is available or not)
It means that if a smb share can be mount, this share is considered
online and the computer should ask if I want to synchronize it.

On MS Win, the user can ask to synchronize
at startup or at shutdown

if a share is unavailable at startup, but become available when working on the
deskop
A popup message (at bottom left) appear to ask if you want to be synchronize

[Bug 231293] Re: totem keyboard usage

2008-05-17 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 231147] Re: F2 doesn't work in Nautilus with read-only files

2008-05-17 Thread Magnentius
Thanks for your quick reply! Please forgive my tone, I didn't intent to
sound this annoyed. Overall it is great software!

I just set a file to read-only to and renaming seems to work indeed.
Initially I received this error when copying the VIDEO_TS directory from
an unprotected retail dvd to my hard drive. So I tried this again but
even know the F2 function seems to work just fine. So I recorded a
television program with my dvd recorder and copied the VIDEO_TS folder
to my hard drive. Now the F2 function does not work. So I checked the
permissions:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Bureaublad/test$ ls -l VIDEO_TS

totaal 54636

-r-xr-xr-x+ 1 magnentius magnentius12288 2008-05-17 10:22
VIDEO_TS.BUP

-r-xr-xr-x+ 1 magnentius magnentius12288 2008-05-17 10:22
VIDEO_TS.IFO

-r-xr-xr-x+ 1 magnentius magnentius32768 2008-05-17 10:22
VIDEO_TS.VOB

-r-xr-xr-x+ 1 magnentius magnentius16384 2008-05-17 10:22
VTS_01_0.BUP

-r-xr-xr-x+ 1 magnentius magnentius16384 2008-05-17 10:22
VTS_01_0.IFO

-r-xr-xr-x+ 1 magnentius magnentius 55771136 2008-05-17 10:22
VTS_01_1.VOB

This seems normal for read-only files. So I made a test directory which
I gave use-only permissions and the F2 function doesn’t work on the
files in it now!

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Bureaublad/test$ ls -ld VIDEO_TS

dr-xr-xr-x+ 2 magnentius magnentius 4096 2008-05-17 10:22 VIDEO_TS

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Bureaublad$ ls -ld test

dr-xr-xr-x+ 3 magnentius magnentius 4096 2008-05-17 10:30 test

*Conclusion*: the F2/rename function does not work on files in a read-
only directory.

[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition

2008-05-17 Thread aaron
I have seen this bug in a few places and I have not found a simple
solution to post in the Ubuntu forums. I am having. the same problem. I
understand how to edit the fstab entries. But before I post a reply to
this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=774426 in the
Ubuntu forums, I would like to make sure that I have the fix correct and
easy enough to follow for just about every body.

You need to determine the partition and device that contain the ntfs partition.
 #sudo fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 60801 4883840017 HPFS/NTFS
You then need to open the fstab file in /etc/fstab and add and entry to mount
the ntfs partition with the correct mount options to ensure that it is mounted
as the correct user.
First create the directory to mount the ntfs partition to.
sudo mkdir /media/[myntfs_part]
#gksudo gedit /etc/fstab
then add the following lines to the fstab file.
/dev/sdb1 /media/[myntfs_part] ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1

Is this the correct solution. I am not sure if I should use the /media
directory or the /mnt directory. What is the standard. I see Rocko using
/c.

I also feel that the user should always have the default option of
sending data to the trash directory even if it is insecure. The average
every day desktop user is not interested in performing all the above
steps just to be able to have files got to a trash can. If it is a
security risk the the user should be told this in the delete prompt as a
warning. Only having a permanently delete option as has been stated will
cause some frustration when people realise later that they can't get
their files back.

If Ubuntu is designed as an average every day desktop system the
security risk when heaving a multi-user work station would mean that it
has already gone to beyond the average every day desktop system where in
the majority of cases only a single person uses a computer. On a multi-
user work station the user should be told that their files, when deleted
and moved to trash will be available to other users on the system. Josh
Smith and Rocko have made this point quite well.

[Bug 231318] [NEW] F8 build keyboard accelerator doesn't work.

2008-05-17 Thread Murray Cumming
Public bug reported:

In gedit, the External Tools plugin adds a Tools/Build menu item which
runs make in the terminal output pane. It has an F8 keyboard
accelerator.

This worked great in Ubuntu Gutsy, but in Ubuntu Hardy I notice that the
F8 accelerator does not work. I have to choose it from the menu instead.

[Bug 145015] X freezes, hogging CPU

2008-05-17 Thread Paul Taylor
Maybe the bug has metamorphosed. At any rate, the following is similar, but I
cannot work out
the appropriate heading under which to report it - if you know, please
redirect my report as
appropriate.

I now have Xubuntu 8.04 (from the 24 April CD image) on the same
machine.

On several occasions it (probably the X server) has frozen. This collection
of log files comes
from the first such occasion. The update-manager was doing its stuff in the
background
(fixing the SSL vulnerability), although that hangs too, and I think I had XDVI
running, maybe
Firefox. I was mainly using Emacs22-gtk. I deleted a line in a file, the
lines either side appeared
superimposed, then the mouse cursor disappeared.

I managed to login remotely using ssh. I found that the X server was taking
98% of the CPU,
so I killed it, but it resurrected itself and again hogged the CPU. This
happenned several times.
However, I managed to save these files from /var/log.

I have had two more similar experiences, without being about to save the
logs.

Similar reports on other Linux web sites have said that X hogs the CPU when
there is a remote
session, but that I cannot see how to do diagnosis without having a remote
session.

[Bug 231319] Re: send/receive mail button

2008-05-17 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 231336] [NEW] Cannot login after adjusting time

2008-05-17 Thread Marc D.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When my PC boots up sometimes the CMOS is reset (probably something
wrong with the CMOS battery). After the Ubuntu login screen it displays
a popup saying that the system time is probably not correct, offering
you the option to adjust it or ignore it. When I click ignore it logs in
fine. But when I choose to adjust it shows the time and date settings
dialog (but without a border, and in the upper-left of the screen).

Expected: after adjusting the settings and clicking close the dialog
closes and logs me in to the system

What happened: after adjusting the settings and clicking close the
dialog closes, but nothing happens (I only see my desktop background).
Killing X, and logging in ignoring the warning works fine.

[Bug 231337] [NEW] Inhibit not working if gnome-screensaver is disabled

2008-05-17 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

gnome-screensaver 2.22.2-0ubuntu1 (hardy)

I prefer not to use the screensaver, but to just disable the screen
through gnome-power-manager, so I unchecked

/apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled

Unfortunately with this option disabled, when I play a video in totem,
the screen becomes black. This does not happen instead if the option is
enabled!

[Bug 13333] Re: Evolution hangs when I start it

2008-05-17 Thread Mario Vukelic
I have been seeing this sometimes with evolution in Hardy, before and
after release, currently with version 2.22.1.1-0ubuntu2. Usually it
happens immediately after reboot and logging in: evolution hangs when
started through the session manager. It hangs right at the start of
listing the mail folders. When I kill and restart evolution proper, I
have the same result. Killing evolution-alarm-notify as such does not
help, but killing all the remaining evolution-* processes does.

[Bug 231318] Re: F8 build keyboard accelerator doesn't work.

2008-05-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report. The way upstream solved it is that they
used ctrl-f8 as default keybinding, and that's still the default and
working correctly on my hardy installation. Do you have a
.gnome2/accelsgedit which redefines this key? What locale do you use?
Not sure why F8 is not working when configured but there must be a
technical reason if upstream switched to use something else

[Bug 231369] [NEW] Add Restart Alsa to Gnome Volume Control Applet Submenu

2008-05-17 Thread carl.b
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: volume-control

It is unfortunately common for applications to crash locking up the alsa sound
system preventing sounds functioning
(recreateable in all distributions by forceably terminating an active xine
application)
In my case common culprits
Totem
Firefox+Flash
Amarok and Xine based players.

As an experienced user i know restarting alsa will resolve this
however for a novice user this is a difficult task possibly requiring a full
reboot.

the addition of a object on the context menu of the volume control entitled
Restart Sound System (ALSA) (Attached)
or similar
with the attached action
`gksu /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart`

could become a potent resolution.

Addition of this button to the Volume Control Application could be
beneficial also.

** Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
