I had a similar problem while coding an openAL program. I found a simple
fix by using asoundconf
asoundconf set-pulseaudio
This makes alsa go via the long route, through pulseaudio, rather than
straight to the sound devices. Works fine so far. I haven't restarted

America/Vancouver, but the gnome clock applet uses America/Los Angeles
for the timezone of the Seattle location, so they didn't match and it

Gedit is a text editor, but I see no reason to prevent it from opening a
binary file even if its garbled and the user cant get anything
meaningful from it.
At least it could have a "This is an non-text file, so there is no
reason for you to open it. Click "Open anyways" if you want open it
anyways
I used Windows and in Notepad, I often opened non-text files.
Example, I would open executables and be able to find some meaningful
data. Sometimes, I found passwords for trojans. I discovered what email
address the keylogger send to, etc. I even saw some libraries that the
program called.

I didn't know that Metacity has any own compositor.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and when I don't have Compiz enabled, it is using
Metacity without compositing.
I am talking about the "minimize effect" when the compositor is not turned on.

Running with the same versions, I can confirm the bug. mp3, ogg, wma
all the same. Same behavior: slider doesn't move and no sound comes
out, but everything else appears to work as expected. It happens kind
of a lot for me, and stopping or restarting pulseaudio or restarting

It's funny you say that frago. All those bugs that make Hardy the

I tried 3 DVDs now called coasters. 1 of them stopped with an
input/output error which was caused by DVD speeds higher than 2x. Two
of them were coasters due to the fixating problem.
My drive is a writer included in my laptop, Acer Aspire 5920g. I'm not

Before the patch i had the same problem, with another problem. I had
some networkmanager error, and the slowdown appear. With this path, the
2 problem are solved for me.
But other people on ubuntu fr experience this bug, the slowdown is
resolved for him, but not the networkmanager bug.
Hey, thanks for reporting. Did you try only one DVD? Can you rule out a
fault in the media, with other words. What is the make and model of your
drive?
