[Bug 250215] [NEW] Clicking 'help' in Appearance Preferences does nothing

2008-07-20 Thread mattismyname
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

Looks like this was also present in Hardy. I'm not sure if it's correct
to submit a new bug for Intrepid or not, so I'm submitting one anyway.

The hardy bug is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
control-center/+bug/136813

[Bug 241206] Re: On Hardy screen saver never displays

2008-07-20 Thread Greg
I am not certain if this is the same bug, but wihat I am seeing is; the
screesaver wont start after I turn it off, play a GL accelerated game like
FlightGear or SecondLife, then turn it on again.
The screensaver will not start after the set time. The screen begins to fade
but then it goes back to normal and no screensaver. It does this continuously
in serial fashion at the time interval setting for Gnome screensaver to start.
If I logout then in again the screensaver does start at the time I set.
I have also found it happens when I leave the screensaver turned on but start a
media player like VLC, that has simulated mouse click capability to stop a
screensaver starting. When I close this application the screensaver still wont
start.
It has also happened before but not always, if I start playing a streaming
video in flash player, inside a browser. When I do this I turn off the
screensaver because I am not sure flash player has simulated mouse clicking,
then turn it on again after.
I found that none of this problem happens if I login to another user account
even if I leave the normal account still loaded but just switched user.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 (latest updates), a Geforce FX 5700 with the restricted
nvidia driver from Ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 148701] Re: Search function in File browser does not function

2008-07-20 Thread Ryan Haigh
I am also hesitant to upgrade to Hardy at the moment as my system is
running just as I like it however it is indeed quite unlikely that
problem will be fixed in the 7.10 version of nautilus. If you haven't
had a look at the instructions for recompiling nautilus you really
should it is not difficult at all (if it was I probably wouldn't have
figured out how to do it)

[Bug 250231] [NEW] gnome-panel NTP time sync allows me to enter random URLs without complaining

2008-07-20 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. right click the time/date in gnome
2. select Adjust time/date
3. click the unlock and enter admin password so you can change time
4. select keep synchronized with internet servers
5. (now install NTP support if you didn't already have it, maybe reboot is
necessary I don't remember)
6. click the select servers button
7. click add and enter www.cnn.com

Actual:
It doesn't complain at all. User thinks his time is now being synchronized with
the specified server.

Expected:
It should print an error because www.cnn.com is not a valid NTP server.

---

I actually had a lot of problems with this because I didn't enter
www.cnn.com but I entered ntp.somehost.com (which some other webpage
told me was valid) and since GNOME didn't complain I thought everything
was working just fine. Later I discovered that the time was different on
machines which synced to the same NTP server and it turned out that this
NTP server was offline.

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1

Problem Nº1:
When any menu is open an I try to change/pause/stop/play the song that
Rhythmbox is playing whit my laptop multimedia keys, or my desktop keyboard
whit multimedia keys, don't change/pause/stop/play anything and Rhythmbox stay
in the same state.

Problem Nº2:
If a menu is open and I want to change the window I'm seeing whit ALT+TAB
anything happen.

They are a lot of other situations, but whit this two you understand the
situation.

I think the current operation when a menu is open is that all the
keyboard is capture by the menu, but I only need the ARROWS and ENTER
buttons, maybe the TAB, and not all the keyboard keys.

[Bug 250235] [NEW] Rythmbox doesn't build complete library from smb share

2008-07-20 Thread Paul Sebbage
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have two client machines running Hardy Heron 8.04 with Rythmbox
0.11.05. I am trying to access my music store on an Iomega Home Network
Hard Drive via a samba share. The share appears to be OK - no problem
browsing files with Nautilus from either client. Rythmbox sees the share
and starts to build a library but stops short. Strangely one client gets
to 3060 tracks in the library, the other gets to 537. Closing and
restarting Rythmbox seems to set it searching for tracks - the scrolling
bar at the bottom right of the window appears - but then it stops with
no tracks added.

The Iomega drive has the latest firmware update (K108 W15).

[Bug 245197] Re: 2.22.3 stable update

2008-07-20 Thread Pjotr12345
Today I tested the newest version in proposed. The problem seems largely
fixed, but not quite.

When I check the system load caused by gnome-system-monitor using the
command top in the terminal, the CPU load is almost imperceptible.
That's good.

But when I check the system load by double-clicking gnome-system-
monitor, so that it opens it's own full-size window, I see the crazy
values again (confirmed by top). 15 % CPU, with peaks as high as 21 %.

So it appears that as long as you use gnome-system-monitor only as a
little meter in the panel, there's no problem with this new version. But
do not double-click it, for then the trouble starts.

For most practical puposes the meter is therefore allright now. Upstream
should deal with the remaining problem, though.

[Bug 249568] Re: Backlight isn't turned off after inactivity on iBook G4

2008-07-20 Thread Wojtek Kaniewski
BTW, manual backlight adjustment with function keys works fine too --
the backlight is turned off completely when changed to minimal value.

I've also attached dbus-monitor log. The scenario was:
1. Wait for backlight to dim.
2. Press some key.
3. Wait for backlight to dim.
4. Press some key.
5. Wait for screen saver to activate.

GPM should turn off the display 1 minute after screen saver activation,
but looks like nothing happened as I kept logging for couple of minutes
longer.

[Bug 245129] Re: in every sistem window 'help' not work have this message : ' There was an error displaying help: Help document user-guide/user-guide.xml not found

2008-07-20 Thread Chris Coulson
I'm having difficulty repeating this. Just to clarify, the steps I am
taking to try and reproduce this are:

1. Open Nautilus
2. Click on Help - Contents (or just press the F1 key)

In my case, the help window appears. In your case, I assume you get an
error dialog with the error There was an error displaying help: Help
document user-guide/user-guide.xml not found

I would be grateful if you could confirm these steps and the behaviour
you see. Also, could you please make sure that you have the ubuntu-docs
meta-package installed:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-docs

Thanks!

[Bug 250265] [NEW] Simplifying transfer to Musicbrainz for a new release

2008-07-20 Thread Markus Drexelius
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

It is a little bit annoying to feed musicbrainz with a new release that
is'n available in musicbrainz. When I have entered the track numbers,
artis, etc. this information should be transferred to musicbrainz when I
click on Transfer Album button, so adding this new CD to musicbrainz
isn't so time intensive as it is now.

[Bug 250202] Re: evince chinese display bug

2008-07-20 Thread Nicolas Quenouille
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 138343] Re: evince consumes a lot of memory (1.5 GB VM)

2008-07-20 Thread Miguel Martinez
I've just added the following comment in the upstream bug:

Does the bugfix just require to update poppler to 0.8.4 (current as of
today)? Or does it also need patches presented here? It's a shame if a
full poppler 0.8 is required, since this will probably leave Ubuntu
Hardy users in the dust. Oh, well, there's always xpdf.

Does anybody here if hardy users will be able to enjoy this bugfix?

As a sidenote, since the gutsy kernel ubuntu has sucked quite a bit
during high IO processing. Hardy is somewhat better but high IO really
kills gutsy, while 100% CPU usage has never been an issue. Joakim might
want to have a look at bug #131094

[Bug 216738] Re: gnome share folder gui seriously flawed

2008-07-20 Thread Alexander van Loon
I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS with the very latest updates and I also
experienced this bug, which is the first time for me because usually
nautilus-share just works. Maybe it will help if I give the complete
(English) error message I have seen:

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare
directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error Permission denied
You do not have permission to create a usershare. Ask your administrator to
grant you permissions to create a share.

I assume that a workaround would be to start nautilus with sudo so I do
have permissions. This is a clean install of 8.04.1 with updates and I
didn't mess with the permissions myself, all I have got is one user with
default permissions. I'm also quite surprised that this bug was reported
in April, but that it is still present in Hardy? With all due respect
for the Ubuntu developer's work, this seems like a high priority bug
which should have been fixed already. Also, this bug is filed for the
package meta-gnome2, but shouldn't it be filed for the package nautilus-
share?

[Bug 250315] [NEW] Gnome Archive Manager wrong display the same filename multiply times in rar archive

2008-07-20 Thread John
Public bug reported:

Gnome Archive Manager displays the same filename multiply times in rar archive.
For example
there is test.rar - including test1.txt (1000 bites), test2.txt(234 bites).

Gnome Archive Manager, Xarchive, Xarchiver display while opening only
two times test1.txt 1000 bites, text1.txt 234 bites- this is test2.txt!

In console unrar, Midnight Commander show all filenames correctly!

So, it is a bug of Gnome GUI.

[Bug 243904] Re: LCD Brightness no longer works on Sony VGN-CR120E

2008-07-20 Thread Walter_Wittel
Still not working with latest updates today (this is a regression from
8.04 where it worked). Per above I can control the brightness via
/etc/acpi/sonybright.sh, so my impression is that it is related to the
panel Brightness Applet, perhaps not the gnome-panel itself.

If someone can provide with some steps to debug I can dig in a deeper.

[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2008-07-20 Thread staticmem
Problem I'm having is with Kaffeine and another application that uses
SDL sound. I'm using Hardy 8.04.1 LTS

While Kaffeine is running and starting the SDL application I receive this error:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:874:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

I killed the gnome-power-manager and this appeared to be a work around but I
was then unable to shut down the system.
I then tried killall pulseaudio as suggested earlier and this worked after
restarting the Kaffeine application.

I wanted a method to disable pulseaudio from starting up, so I tried:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop

This did not appear to do anything and disabling in BootUp-Manager also
does not appear to help. It appears that pulseaudio is run as a user
and not as a root daemon. I ended up with a simple work around (for
now) by renaming the pulse audio file to something else and restarted my
system. As expected the login prompt tune worked (root level) but
logging in as a user the System sounds are no longer heard but my other
sound applications seem be working for now.

$ sudo mv /usr/bin/pulseaudio /usr/bin/pulseaudio-renamed

Can pulseaudio be disabled altogether in the system, if so how?

[Bug 250326] [NEW] Shut Down... panel applet only restarts gnome on intrepid (near Alpha 3)

2008-07-20 Thread Walter_Wittel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Not sure if I got the right package. I didn't see Shut Down... listed
in the Synaptic description for this package.

When I click the Shut Down... icon I added to the panel, I get the
choices to Restart or Shut Down, but both of these just restart
gnome (same as ctl-alt-backspace). If I use the Options menu from the
logon screen shut down and restart work correctly. Also the Exit...
applet works on 8.04 on this hardware.

I don't know if Suspend and Hibernate work as they have never
functioned correctly on my hardware (Sony VGN-CR120E).

[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2008-07-20 Thread Eugenia Loli-Queru
Ok guys, I have an easy workaround that works for me. Create a sound.sh
file and type in it:

#!/usr/bin/sh
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils start

Then, save that file, and make it executable:
chmod +x sound.sh

Then, copy it to /usr/bin:
sudo mv sound.sh /usr/bin/

You will have to run this little script every time your laptop resumes
from sleep or hibernation I am afraid! I tried adding these two lines of
start/stop on the /etc/acpi/resume/'s alsa file, but it would NOT make a
difference, while running them on a terminal after the resume works!
Yes, you get some permission errors trying to run this script as a plain
user, but the weird thing is, it works! (honestly, it shouldn't have
worked!)

I hope this gives enough info to the ubuntu guys to fix this. I giving
this IBM T23 laptop to my little brother in Greece and the only
hardware-related bug in the whole system is this sound problem (even the
modem works!). I am leaving for Greece in 10 days and when the laptop
gets there, it will never get updated again because my bro is in dial-
up. So if this doesn't get fixed in 10 days, he will have to stay with
broken audio until this laptop dies...

2nd-workaround attempt.

for 1 you go to about:config (in firefox location bar); and use the
right mouse button somewhere in the config table you will see to say
New - Boolean.

Then you use the preference name i said and say true.

For that to work you need to be sure to use firefix 3.0.1. you can
check the version by running

dpkg -l firefox-3.0

on a terminal or in firefox in Help - About.

[Bug 250203] Re: The Menu capture all the keyboard buttons

2008-07-20 Thread Jon Packard
Thank you for taking the time to report the problems you've experienced
and helping to improve Ubuntu. Multimedia keys are set up globally, not
per program. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultimediaKeys for
information regarding this. If your multimedia keys are correctly
configured and you are having trouble with them in a specific program,
such as Rhythmbox, please file a bug report with details about the
hardware you are using and which programs they do and do not work in.
Also, in the future, please remember to file one bug per separate
problem. They are much more manageable when they are filed individually.

As for the menu problem, simply click outside the menu or hit the Escape
key to leave the menu, then switch to the program that you need. As for
changing the way this works, we appreciate your suggestion. However, the
changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more
discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or
forum. http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a
good start for determining which mailing list to use.

[Bug 250326] Re: Shut Down... panel applet only restarts gnome on intrepid (near Alpha 3)

2008-07-20 Thread Walter_Wittel
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 250009 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250009

Sorry about the dupe. One correction to the above. I tried suspend /
hibernate for the first time since reinstall of alpha 2 / upgrades and
suspend / hibernate now work :-). So the only problems are as described
in this and bug #250009.
