[Bug 249803] Re: When Escape is pressed to dismiss Log off/Switch User screen, the desktop stays dimmed

2008-08-10 Thread xrayA4T
ok, I have found some extra info. I was unable to replicate the bug with
Compiz running, so I switched it off. I was then able to replicate but
was unable to switch Compiz back on. In searching for a fix a came
across https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/control-
center/+bug/231904 and saw that the key
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager was indeed selected. By un-
checking Metacity as my compositing manager I was able to get Compiz
working again. The dimming issue again went away. If I then went to
System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual Effects I was able to turn off
Compiz and the issue was still fixed. I then went back and re-checked
Metacity as my compositing manager and the problem was back. So it looks
like an issue with the Metacity compositing manager interacting with the
logout manager.

[Bug 256814] [NEW] "Main menu" applet takes a time while displaying menu the first time; "Menu bar" does not have this problem...

2008-08-10 Thread Roman Polach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

While default "Menu bar" gnome panel applet is very responsive to clicking,
the same is not true for "Main menu" applet.

Seems like "Menu bar" has always cached menu items and it displays menu
immediately.
But in "Main menu" at least first click after login takes a while (or a long
time on slower machines).
Subsequent clicks are handled much more quickly.
It would be nice to have "Main menu" applet as fast as "Menu bar"..

[Bug 230485] Re: firefox "blinks" black & removes main menu / task bar at top of Ubuntu desktop screen

2008-08-10 Thread DavidC
I have been having the same or similar problem. I would open Firefox and it
would only be maximized and could only get out of it by going to file-close or
alt-tab to another application to get the Gnome menu and application bars to
minimize it.
I saw someone had the problem here with stumbleupon so I looked in my addons
and found I had interclue running. I disabled interclue and the problem
stopped. I then installed stumbleupon and after running a short period and
restarting Firefox it returned, disabled stumbleupon, restarted Firefox and it
was corrected again.
I have my ideas as to what it may be but I'm sure someone who can program
could figure what exactly it may be. The bug seems to be associated with addons
that search or log information/links on sites visited.
My suggestion is to maybe disable all addons and add them back one at a time
testing them all and seeing what the offending ones have in common. Probably be
a good Idea to give the bug fixers here the list.
I hope this helps someone temporarily get running, and the programmers to ID
the bug.
Dave

[Bug 256618] Re: New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying)

2008-08-10 Thread Kevin Lange
In response to Dylan McCall, should the animation behavior be changed,
there is a slim (but possible) chance that I would accept this. Probably
not, but it's a start.

It seems like the following should be done:
1. Add an option to gconf, bool, 'update_autohide_strut', default = disabled
(because users don't like change forced upon them as default values, this is a
known fact of creating a new release)
2. Change current behavior to update after animation cycle. (which would
improve performance when the option is enabled)
3. Add in original exception when gconf option is disabled. (because that's the
entire point of this bug report)
4. ...?
5. Profit.

On another note, the last bit of my original report is a simple joke,
and no hard feelings are meant towards Vincent Untz for what he did,
even if I am a bit ticked off about it. It's not like this is a closed-
source app I'm forced to use - I can go and 'fix' it for myself, just as
I did.

I also have a forum topic running for any less-pertinent discussion of
the bug: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=885625

[Bug 204654] Re: add UTC entry to clock

2008-08-10 Thread klotz
Perhaps TZ isn't the right approach here: the self help for Coick 2.22.2 claims
General/Panel DIsplay a UTC clock type:
"Use UTC: Select this option to display Universal Coordinated Time, also known
as Greenwich Mean Time, in the applet."

However, I note that when I use Preferences in Clock 2.22.2,
General/Panel Display doesn't offer the UTC option.

This might be a better fix to upstream, since the applet already claims
to support it and it's documented and easily discoverable.

This is more like a bug in thinking then programming. You guys provided us with
very inconvenient "automated feature" to set POP server port to 25 without
possibility to change it. Any POP server that works with other port then 25 is
practically invisible to Evolution. For example gmail ... not accessible from
Evolution anymore!
This is critical to put back. Btw., plz don't turn Ubuntu into Windows. We want
control over our system and not a bunch of automated things we can't control,

[Bug 152176] [NEW] volume control status sometimes incorrect

2008-08-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Occasionally, when using the media keys with the mouse on the second
display, the volume control that appears will show 0 volume. Pressing
the media keys again reveals the volume I expect (70-90%). The volume
is actually at a good level when this happens, so it is strictly a
status display problem.

I believe this happens when using the media (volume adjust) keys on the
second screen for the first time. I have not noticed it happening on my
primary screen. I use the nvidia driver w/ 2 displays combined to a
2960x1050 desktop.

Update: see first reply

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

I have an autohide panel on the righthand side of my screen.

Previously, revealing the panel would slide it over the windows on

After upgrading to Intrepid, revealing the panel resizes the windows on
screen.

I've reproduced the old behaviour on my laptop (although it's autohide
panel is on the left) and have attached an image illustrating this.

Re: [Bug 248273] Re: Annoying beep sound

2008-08-10 Thread oddvar
Yes you are correct. This beep sound is not a system-sound, but some very
low- volume "pulse" or likewise. The sound is not always there at boot, I would
say more like 76-80% of the time. When it is strong enough to catch my attention
it is very annoying. I noticed after I installed Gutsy the sound disappeared
but came back after system update.

Thanks, Oddvar

I presume the tick box to the left is enabled? If you click the play
button do you get a short drum roll? The reason I'm asking about this
option is that if it is enabled but you have no sound specified, you get
a system beep instead.  I thought that might have been the cause;
clearly the problem is not that simple.

I'm from Chile and here the most popular size of paper is letter and legal. The
default size in eog is A4, I don't know why but is easy to change and I happy

[Bug 256736] [NEW] Printing to a pdf in portrait mode from evince fails if paper is wider than it is tall

2008-08-10 Thread Fred LeMaster
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

If you create a custom paper type where the page width is larger than
the page height evince will always orient the paper so that the longer
dimension is the height. Switching the orientaion to lansdcape will make
the dimensons correct but then the pdf file is sideways.

To replicate:
Try creating a custom paper type that is 5 in x 3 in. Print a document that is
wider than it is tall. The resulting pdf file will have your content jammed at
the top of a page that is 3 in x 5 in.

This is in Hardy Heron evince-2.22.2-0ubuntu1

[Bug 240178] [NEW] GDM randomly crashes on ATI HD 2400PRO AGP

2008-08-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have AGP version of ATI HD 2400PRO. My GDM randomly crashes and then I
get back to the text mode. Last time in the text mode I saw an error
report in my /var/log/gdm/:0.log file, so I attached it and I hope it
will help.

edit: I had ATI Radeon 9550 a few weeks ago and I never saw anything
similar to this, although I didn't test it on Hardy for a long time.

[Bug 256618] Re: New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying)

2008-08-10 Thread Dylan McCall
If this is turned into a gconf option, the functionality is still
broken. The strut should only need to change once; to the end point.
While it means we don't get a nice smooth animation, it will probably
feel smoother anyway because resizing windows is a very costly operation
for the time being.

In addition, I think this may give us some serious usability problems.
If the struts are changing when the user opens the panel, this means
that everything on his desktop is unexpectedly changing position as
well! What if he decides to close a window after opening the panel? User
moves mouse off the panel, onto the close button, and holds there for a
bit. Suddenly the panel closes and everything goes back to where it was,
all before the user can react. He accidentally clicks the "format my
hard drive" button instead.

Lame example, but the only things which should move are those that the
user directly tells or expects (within reason) to move. Anything more
causes immense confusion.

[Bug 256658] Re: Attempt to copy files to DVD+R DL failed with non-specific error

2008-08-10 Thread Richard Johnson
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

I tried to drag and drop (copy) a large, nested set of files and
directories to a DVD+R DL (Memorex). This failed, once with an older
unused DVD and once with a brand new disk. This is a serious bug, since
I must back up before fixing my dual boot Grub by reinstalling Hardy
Heron. My current Hardy installation is part of an upgrade chain that
  started with Feisty Fawn.

The error message box contains: Error writing to disc
There was an error
writing to the disc:
Unhandled error,
aborting

My current Grub fails to offer Vista (Longhorn) as an option, after
working successfully since Feisty Fawn was first installed as a dual
boot. The latest set up downloaded updates to Hardy were the
approximate time of this failure. Hardy seems to work fine, and I can
see my Vista files. Thus, for me, this is an extremely urgent fix to
  the bug preventing my download.

After dragging and dropping to the DVD icon, the Writing Files to DVD
box appeared and, after checking out the files (2.3 G worth), offered
the option of "Write to DVD". I accepted and the error box cited above
  appeared almost immediately.

+ Note: reinstalled Hardy Heron after making a new installation disk.
+ Installed without problem, lost files (fully backed up), but Grub
+ appeared with the Longhorn optional boot showing, so that solved the
+ problem. The bug, however, remains to be fixed.
+
  Please advise.
  Thanks!

[Bug 256691] Re: apt-get update problem

2008-08-10 Thread Nick Ellery
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. We'd be grateful if you would then
provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 250106] Re: No images found in obex

2008-08-10 Thread KevinM
Regarding viewers and the memory stick. If a right-click and use Open
with Firefox I get the message 'obex is not a registered protocol'. If
I use Fspot 'Fspot encountered a fatal error - Invalid URI: The hostname
could not be parsed'. Gimp gives me a Jpeg and gimp error message. It
may be something to do with delays in sending data from the phone to the
PC. The picture presentation in Nautilus is a default icon not a view
of the actual picture (see attached).

[Bug 256707] [NEW] gnome-session crashes with nvidia driver enabled

2008-08-10 Thread alexrudd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

Anytime I try to use the latest (beta) nvidia driver, I cannot login.

The driver (my card is a GeForce Go 7400, so I use nvidia-glx-177) loads
fine since I can see the nvidia splash screen. The GDM greeter works
fine also, but as soon as I log in X crashes. KDE4 crashes too, but I
figured I would report the bug against GNOME.

with some success on other help terms later, so I didn't quite give up
on it, and now I'm confirming your bug.

One of many ways to reproduce:
1. Open help
2. Search for "startup"
3. Click the first link (it's
file:///usr/share/gnome/help/users-admin/C/users-admin.xml#goscustsession-5)
4. It won't load, so click it again or any other link.
5. Window disappears.

[Bug 249803] Re: When Escape is pressed to dismiss Log off/Switch User screen, the desktop stays dimmed

2008-08-10 Thread xrayA4T
Hi, I am not sure where to find the driver in 8.04. I have a intel 910M
integrated based chipset. I have noticed that on my machine when I press
the green icon to bring up the menu the back ground goes half dark then
gets darker rather slowly on my machine. If I press esc straight away it
returns fine. If I do it on the second darkening level then it stays
dark. I have found if I try to turn on Visual Effects to normal which
fails on my machine, it goes back to none but the screen resets to full
brightness. The mouse stays bright. It looks like there is an overlay
that is dimming the background that is not getting removed.

[Bug 256686] [NEW] gimp launches when panel icons clicked

2008-08-10 Thread spiderbatdad
Public bug reported:

Recent updates in Intrepid, titled alpha4, have resulted in gimp launching
whenever panel icons like file system or home are clicked...this holds true for
trying to access the folders through the Places menu as well.
Numerous other programs are crashing, and appearances keep changing to
(blue)human
I have tried to create valgrind with dbg symbols for gimp and gnome panel.

[Bug 256679] [NEW] Seahorse is listing passwords multiple times

2008-08-10 Thread David I.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using
Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

2) The version of the package you are using
seahorse:
  Installed: 2.23.6-0ubuntu1

When clicking on the 'Passwords' tab, Seahorse lists my passwords. *good*
But when selecting another tab and switching back to 'Passwords', my passwords
are listed again, but the former List is there too.
So every entry is doubled.

I can repeat this and everytime the passwords are shown one more time...

[Bug 256678] [NEW] error#461106 gnome-panel update/upgrade

2008-08-10 Thread roger thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

as update manager crashes (i.e.gets stuck in a loop) if serious or grave bugs
are discovered in 'Parsing found/fixed bugs routine',I used apt-get update and
apt-get upgrade.Upgrade pharsing found ; GRAVE error#461106 in Gnome-panel and
SERIOUS error#486777 in Xulrunner1-9 (merged with #492928) and GRAVE error
#493797 in Python 2.5
Ubuntu 0.8.04
Obviously these must be known bugs - so why are you trying to upgrade existing
packages with known bugs. This also brings to light the error in UPDATE MANAGER
that causes it to loop if GRAVE and/or SERIOUS bugs are found (it neither
ABORTS the upgrade -when it could report an error thro' Apport - nor does it
return to the user). It merely sits in a loop with the question ' Are you sure
you want to continue (y/n/?...) ' showing in the description pane.

[Bug 256675] [NEW] Mouse get stuck as grabbing a file and then hovering it above the "Places" shortcuts.

2008-08-10 Thread Felipe Xavier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

How to reproduce this bug:
1. "Grab" a file with the cursor, then try to move this file and, as you're
moving, hover it above the "Places" shortcuts.
2. The cursor gets stuck as the message drag-n-drop cursor and you can't click
on other windows, etc.

Sometime later, nautilus will try to move the file to "/" and if you
cancel it will show an error, if you click on details:

"DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken."

Details:
1. Ubuntu 8.04.1.
2. Nautilus version: 1:2.22.3-0ubuntu2.
3. This bug doesn't happen always.

[Bug 256658] [NEW] Attempt to copy files to DVD+R DL failed with non-specific error

2008-08-10 Thread Richard Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I tried to drag and drop (copy) a large, nested set of files and
directories to a DVD+R DL (Memorex). This failed, once with an older
unused DVD and once with a brand new disk. This is a serious bug, since
I must back up before fixing my dual boot Grub by reinstalling Hardy
Heron. My current Hardy installation is part of an upgrade chain that
started with Feisty Fawn.

The error message box contains: Error writing to disc
  There was an error
writing to the disc:
  Unhandled error, aborting

Please advise.
Thanks!
