[Bug 249803] Re: When Escape is pressed to dismiss Log off/Switch User screen, the desktop stays dimmed
ok, I have found some extra info. I was unable to replicate the bug with Compiz running, so I switched it off. I was then able to replicate but was unable to switch Compiz back on. In searching for a fix a came across https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/control- center/+bug/231904 and saw that the key /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager was indeed selected. By un- checking Metacity as my compositing manager I was able to get Compiz working again. The dimming issue again went away. If I then went to System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual Effects I was able to turn off Compiz and the issue was still fixed. I then went back and re-checked Metacity as my compositing manager and the problem was back. So it looks like an issue with the Metacity compositing manager interacting with the logout manager. -- When Escape is pressed to dismiss Log off/Switch User screen, the desktop stays dimmed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249803 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 256814] [NEW] "Main menu" applet takes a time while displaying menu the first time; "Menu bar" does not have this problem...
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-applets While default "Menu bar" gnome panel applet is very responsive to clicking, the same is not true for "Main menu" applet. Seems like "Menu bar" has always cached menu items and it displays menu immediately. But in "Main menu" at least first click after login takes a while (or a long time on slower machines). Subsequent clicks are handled much more quickly. [Bug 230485] Re: firefox "blinks" black & removes main menu / task bar at top of Ubuntu desktop screen
I have been having the same or similar problem. I would open Firefox and it would only be maximized and could only get out of it by going to file-close or alt-tab to another application to get the Gnome menu and application bars to minimize it. I saw someone had the problem here with stumbleupon so I looked in my addons and found I had interclue running. I disabled interclue and the problem stopped. I then installed stumbleupon and after running a short period and restarting Firefox it returned, disabled stumbleupon, restarted Firefox and it was corrected again. I have my ideas as to what it may be but I'm sure someone who can program could figure what exactly it may be. The bug seems to be associated with addons that search or log information/links on sites visited. My suggestion is to maybe disable all addons and add them back one at a time testing them all and seeing what the offending ones have in common. Probably be a good Idea to give the bug fixers here the list. I hope this helps someone temporarily get running, and the programmers to ID the bug. [Bug 256618] Re: New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying)
In response to Dylan McCall, should the animation behavior be changed, there is a slim (but possible) chance that I would accept this. Probably not, but it's a start. It seems like the following should be done: 1. Add an option to gconf, bool, 'update_autohide_strut', default = disabled (because users don't like change forced upon them as default values, this is a known fact of creating a new release) 2. Change current behavior to update after animation cycle. (which would improve performance when the option is enabled) 3. Add in original exception when gconf option is disabled. (because that's the entire point of this bug report) 4. ...? 5. Profit. On another note, the last bit of my original report is a simple joke, and no hard feelings are meant towards Vincent Untz for what he did, even if I am a bit ticked off about it. It's not like this is a closed- source app I'm forced to use - I can go and 'fix' it for myself, just as I did. I also have a forum topic running for any less-pertinent discussion of the bug: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=885625 -- New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256618 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 248273] Re: Annoying beep sound
Yes you are correct. This beep sound is not a system-sound, but some very low- volume "pulse" or likewise. The sound is not always there at boot, I would say more like 76-80% of the time. When it is strong enough to catch my attention it is very annoying. I noticed after I installed Gutsy the sound disappeared but came back after system update. [Bug 256618] Re: New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying)
If this is turned into a gconf option, the functionality is still broken. The strut should only need to change once; to the end point. While it means we don't get a nice smooth animation, it will probably feel smoother anyway because resizing windows is a very costly operation for the time being. In addition, I think this may give us some serious usability problems. If the struts are changing when the user opens the panel, this means that everything on his desktop is unexpectedly changing position as well! What if he decides to close a window after opening the panel? User moves mouse off the panel, onto the close button, and holds there for a bit. Suddenly the panel closes and everything goes back to where it was, all before the user can react. He accidentally clicks the "format my hard drive" button instead. Lame example, but the only things which should move are those that the user directly tells or expects (within reason) to move. Anything more causes immense confusion. ** Changed in: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256618 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 256658] Re: Attempt to copy files to DVD+R DL failed with non-specific error
** Description changed: Binary package hint: nautilus I tried to drag and drop (copy) a large, nested set of files and directories to a DVD+R DL (Memorex). This failed, once with an older unused DVD and once with a brand new disk. This is a serious bug, since I must back up before fixing my dual boot Grub by reinstalling Hardy Heron. My current Hardy installation is part of an upgrade chain that started with Feisty Fawn. The error message box contains: Error writing to disc There was an error writing to the disc: Unhandled error, aborting My current Grub fails to offer Vista (Longhorn) as an option, after working successfully since Feisty Fawn was first installed as a dual boot. The latest set up downloaded updates to Hardy were the approximate time of this failure. Hardy seems to work fine, and I can see my Vista files. Thus, for me, this is an extremely urgent fix to the bug preventing my download. After dragging and dropping to the DVD icon, the Writing Files to DVD box appeared and, after checking out the files (2.3 G worth), offered the option of "Write to DVD". I accepted and the error box cited above appeared almost immediately. + Note: reinstalled Hardy Heron after making a new installation disk. + Installed without problem, lost files (fully backed up), but Grub + appeared with the Longhorn optional boot showing, so that solved the + problem. The bug, however, remains to be fixed. + Please advise. Thanks! [Bug 256691] Re: apt-get update problem
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: gnome-terminal => apt Status: New => Incomplete -- apt-get update problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256691 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 256700] Re: where to disposit the own phone no. in Ekiga?
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. [Bug 249803] Re: When Escape is pressed to dismiss Log off/Switch User screen, the desktop stays dimmed
Hi, I am not sure where to find the driver in 8.04. I have a intel 910M integrated based chipset. I have noticed that on my machine when I press the green icon to bring up the menu the back ground goes half dark then gets darker rather slowly on my machine. If I press esc straight away it returns fine. If I do it on the second darkening level then it stays dark. I have found if I try to turn on Visual Effects to normal which fails on my machine, it goes back to none but the screen resets to full brightness. The mouse stays bright. It looks like there is an overlay that is dimming the background that is not getting removed. -- When Escape is pressed to dismiss Log off/Switch User screen, the desktop stays dimmed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249803 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 256658] [NEW] Attempt to copy files to DVD+R DL failed with non-specific error
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus I tried to drag and drop (copy) a large, nested set of files and directories to a DVD+R DL (Memorex). Please advise. Thanks!
