select folder in nautilus, right click, choose open with select application A.
at this time in "open with" submenu no applications listed (should be: A)
select folder in nautilus, right click, choose open with select application B.
at this time in "open with" submenu only application A listed (should be: A, B).
select folder in nautilus, right click, choose open with select application C.
at this time in "open with" submenu only applications A and B listed
(should be: A, B, C).
and so on ...

It was fixed this morning. The apparition of python-gtk2 in the Update

2008-09-02 Thread Przemysław Kulczycki
I suggest to add a "Run task manager" entry to gnome's panel context
menu, just like in Windows. This would be much easier to discover for
users than any keyboard shortcut.

The bug you linked is marked as a duplicate of a bug #11160 which was
about Gnome misbehaving when ctrl-alt-del was assigned as a shortcut,
not about just using that shortcut by default.

[Bug 264209] Re: keytouch should be connected with gnome-keybindings-properties

2008-09-02 Thread danielhollocher
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

This is a wish item. Keytouch is a program that automatically sets up
the keys of those non-standard keyboards, you know the ones with those
multimedia keys, whatever. gnome-keybindings-properties should have a
connection with keytouch, at least informing the user of its existence.

gnome-keybindings-properties is unable to take advantage of these extra
keys at all, where as keytouch is quite the opposite, it takes advantage
of these keys beautifully. Keytouch has reasonable defaults, and has
the flexibility to accommodate anything. But, the point of this bug
report is not to sell keytouch. Keytouch is great.

The problem was how damn hard it was to find out about keytouch! I
googled, I asked in #ubuntu, I googled again, I gave up. Then, one day
I'm trying random factoids on ubottu, I thought, lets try !shortcuts
factoid, see if it even exists. Voila! There it is. A link to a

gnome-keybindings-properties should have some connection to keytouch.
One can dream up some automated install system, and some clean way of

Everything in the help section is pretty
useless anyway. Its so bad, it looks like a poorly paid intern wrote
it. The first third is a description of what a keyboard shortcut is.
Why do I need a description of what a shortcut is? What kind of person
is going to click the System menu, then the preferences menu, then the
keyboard shortcuts menu, and NOT know what keyboard shortcut is? Are
there computer grannies clicking around on all the menus without a clue,
finding themselves with a strange window with lots of gibberish entitled
"Keyboard Shortcuts", and then saying to themselves, "I'm not going to
do what any normal unsavvy computer user would do, close this
meaningless window, and write emails to my friends, I'm gona click the
HELP button." Well, that person is fucked, because the 2 liner
explanation of what keyboard shortcut is simple yet obtuse enough that
probably only people who already know what a keyboard shortcut is will
understand it. Well, fuck those granny hackers anyway, because thats
what tutorials and general walkthroughs are for.

Next, is a restating of the directions of how to use the keyboard
shortcuts applet, which are ALREADY PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED IN THE MAIN
WINDOW. (I'm sorry, did I loose you with the capitol letters? Please
read the contents of this parenthesized section to understand more
clearly. The directions are "already prominently displayed in the main
  window.")

- The last section describes how the shortcuts are organized, incase you
couldn't figure it out from the setup already there? Lets see, there is a
heading called "Desktop". I wonder what kind of shortcuts could be there? Its
must be tough to figure out, lets check the help file: "Desktop: These are
general shortcuts for the... whole... desktop..." Brilliant! I must be on the
path to enlightenment. NO, I feel like I'm in an episode of the angry
videogame nerd reviewing one of the worst games ever. Oh, but I have been
unfair to this section. There is more, there is a "such as". Yes, instead of
looking at the listing of actual shorcuts available, I get a "such as" to point
out some of the "finer" shortcuts to be had. POINTLESS BULLSHIT!

Back to the original point. Please make it easy to find out about keytouch.
Just include a blurb in the help file or something. Or make an "advanced"
button that tells you about keytouch. This would save those looking to setup
their keyboards ALLOT of trouble, and give them a greater feeling that their
hardware is strongly supported in Ubuntu.

[Bug 264180] [NEW] Sizing buttons (upper right side) of windows disappear when using Extra Visual Effects

2008-09-02 Thread Rowyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am using Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04.1), and recently I turned on the
Extra Visual Effects feature to have that rotating cube effect (Compiz
Fusion i think) for workspaces. I'm not sure if that immediately caused
this: the sizing buttons on the upper right corner of any window just
disappeared. So any open window is by default maximized, and you can't
resize or minimize the current open window at all. I turned off the
Visual Effects and it all went back to normal.

[Bug 74325] Re: Baobab uses incorrect units

2008-09-02 Thread Endolith
99% of Gnome users are confused when you use "k" to mean "1024", since
it means 1000 everywhere else. Please measure in common decimal
multiples and use "k-" to mean 1,000, "M-" to mean 1,000,000, etc.

http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?units

Many Ubuntu/Gnome programs are following the standard now. Please make
Baobab consistent with them.

[Bug 264169] [NEW] radio does not list stations in rhythmbox, won't play

2008-09-02 Thread Martin D.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I just downloaded this player from ubuntu's list of selections.
Originally, it was indicated by the Synaptic Package Manager that
Rhythmbox was among the preloaded ubuntu applications, but the icon was
not to be found that would start the application, and I could find it
listed nowhere.

I deleted the application, then reloaded it. It showed up under the
Applications menu. However, when I opened it, there was none of the pre-
loaded data that was shown in the Help file. There was no data at all.
It would not search for a station I put into the Command line. It was as
dead as dead could be. I am running ubuntu 8.04

[Bug 242713] Re: Suspends that are longer than 6 hours will inexplicably claim to fail, but not really fail

2008-09-02 Thread Mario Limonciello
** Summary changed:

- Suspends that are longer than 6 hours will inexplicably fail
+ Suspends that are longer than 6 hours will inexplicably claim to fail, but
not really fail

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The bug is present in both Ubuntu 8.04 and Ubuntu 8.10
  (GPM 2.23.1-0ubuntu1 in 8.10 and 2.22.1-1ubuntu4 in 8.04)

Currently, g-p-m will make a series of annoying beeps in the event of a
'failed' suspend. Unfortunately, a 'failed' suspend just means that it
failed 'one' of the times on the way down or on the way up. It will
continue to try until it actually makes it down or up.

  Addressing bug:
This is typically caused by a suspend longer than 6 hours, because dbus will
time out the connection after 6 hours. I've supplied a fix to upstream gnome
which as been added to their tree to resolve the issue.

  Impact:
This bug is cosmetic (per say, since it's an audible sound), but can get
rather annoying.

  Test Case:
  1) Ensure audio is working
  2) Ensure that the checkbox to play a noise in the event of an error is
checked
- 3) Suspend a machine that is known machine for > 6 hours
+ 3) Suspend a machine that is known to suspend OK for short periods of time
for > 6 hours
  4) Listen for a series of annoying beeps

  Regression Potential:
This code path is only used when suspending > 6 hours. There shouldn't be
any regression potential.

2008-09-02 Thread Polygon
I have some new information, it seems that on boot, the touchpad
settings are applied correctly, but then it seems that the kernel loses
connection to the touchpad and reconnects, but once it does this, then
the touchpad settings are lost

here is a kern.log file showing some interestering lines on whats
happening when the touchpad screws up:

[Bug 263594] Re: String replacement changes \n to a new line

2008-09-02 Thread Andreas Moog
Thanks for reporting this issue. However, this is not a bug since \n is
the Escape-Sequence for "new line". If you want to have it replaced by
"\n" you should use "\\n" as string thus escaping the "\" and preventing
it from being interpreted. Feel free to report any new issues you might
find.

Didn't realise this hadn't been updated: it's the default font on

[Bug 242618] Re: Nautilus and other gnome apps using incorrect umask for new directories

2008-09-02 Thread Lutfi
I am not sure this also related bug on this case or not. Here i make the
files on my dekstop:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l Desktop/
total 4
drwxrwxr-x 2 lutfi Domain Users 4096 2008-09-03 04:56 directory
-rw-rw-r-- 1 lutfi Domain Users0 2008-09-03 04:56 file

I am use umask 0002 on /etc/profiles. And it is OK with umask now.
Thanks anybody :-D

Problem come from ownership of my files after copy/move to NFS server.
These compare copy and move using gnome and terminal.

Copy is OK. Because copy make new file/directory on NFS server. And the
ownership is same with NFS server. Ownership change from my Desktop
"lutfi.Domain Users" to be "lutfi.mis" on NFS server.

But why for moving from desktop using gnome have different ownership
with moving using terminal? Gnome give permission "lutfi.mis" (change on
server directory only. file no problem) and terminal still have my
original permission "lutfi.Domain Users" (both directory and file).

So? Why moving files with nautilus have different result with terminal?

[Bug 264140] [NEW] Epiphany sometimes stops loading web pages

2008-09-02 Thread Tessa Lau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

After having Epiphany open for a few days, it will eventually stop
loading web pages. Any attempt to load a web page results in the
browser just reporting "Loading..." indefinitely. It doesn't matter if
it's refreshing a current page, clicking on a link to navigate to a new
page, or typing a URL into the location bar.

After it gets into this state, no new pages can be loaded. If I close
down all epiphany windows and reopen epiphany using the Ubuntu
applications menu, the new window that comes up still has this problem.
It's only after I do a "killall epiphany-browser" and a restart that I
am able to load web pages again.

While in this state, an strace of the epiphany-browser process shows the
following loop:

poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8,
events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=11, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=12,

[Bug 264134] [NEW] ipod quick scroll displays incorrectly after rhythmbox transfer

2008-09-02 Thread Nick Russell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

After transferring songs to an ipod from rhythmbox, 'when "Quick
scrolling" on the iPod (rapidly spinning the wheel so that it starts
scrolling through the alphabet [first letter of each track/album/etc.]
rather than just songs)' the letters displayed are incorrect. 'Instead
of the normal alphabet progression, the letter 'T' [...] appear[s]
between the correct letters.' This only happens if I use rhythmbox to
sync the ipod, rather than itunes. I think it has something to do with
artists with 'the' in the their name.

Partially taken from ubuntuforum user Pauho's post (because he explained
it better than I can!) who is also having the same problem, here:

[Bug 189288] Re: Couldn't open display computer:/// Places Computer

2008-09-02 Thread Felix Kämmler
Hello guys, i had to suffer under this *** update as well. I spent
hours n front of my computer, downgraded gvfs, reinstalled it,
reinstalled nautilus over and over again-- nothing worked.

But now I got it working! nautilus will handle computer: , network: and
trash: correctly. The only thing that got it for me was downgrading bth gvfs
and gvfs-backends to version 0.2.3-0ubuntu3.
(0.2.3-0ubuntu4 is the version in the hardy repo, 0.2.5-0ubuntu2 the one in
hardy-updates.)
I used the download page from launchpad, you can also search for the packages
there (debs available):
gvfs-backends 0.2.3-0ubuntu3:
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/amd64/gvfs-backends/0.2.3-0ubuntu3
gvfs 0.2.3-0ubuntu3:
 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/amd64/gvfs/0.2.3-0ubuntu3
then download the debs. if you don't get your native package manager to install
them because you have a newer version installed, type the following into a
console:
sudo dpkg -i PATH\ OF\ DEB-FILE\

I hope it works for you. Remember not to update these files ever
I'm so happy now!! Good luck to all of you as well with this problem..

PS: I think updating on linux is 3times worse than virus attacks on
windows. But maybe it's a god idea to forget about all hardy-update
repos and only take repos from hardy, hardy-security and hardy-
backports...that's what I do now

[Bug 210561] Re: Time zone changes on every boot

2008-09-02 Thread newuser
Weird stuff about this bug!
My timezone is Europe/Rome. After every reboot, if I check about right click on
date&time in the panel, Preferences -> Clock preferences -> Locations -> I
select my location -> edit I can see a different timezone, everytime
America/Asuncion.
But if I left click on date&time in the panel and click on Locations below the
location is correct!
In other words.. locations doesn't change if I check it from the date&time
below, but it changes in America/Asuncion every reboot in the locations
settings!
Why that? It's a problem?

[Bug 264108] [NEW] Volume control sliders "separate" when dragged

2008-09-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

$ gnome-volume-control --version
GNOME gnome-volume-control 2.22.0

I have PulseAudio Sound Server selected for everything in
System->Preferences->Sound->Devices, i.e.
* Sound Events
* Music and Movies
* Audio Conferencing

In gnome-volume-control, I want to be able to drag the sliders, of the
PCM module for example, up and down to adjust sound volume. I also would
like the same volume level in both of my ears (using headphones) so I
choose to enable that the left- and right-channel sliders should be
locked/linked together so that I slide one of the sliders and the other
one follows. I do this by clicking the little "link" button below the
sliders and the status field at the bottom of the window says: "Lock
channels for PCM together".

When I actually slider the sliders up and down, adjusting the volume,
the locking of the channel sliders disables, effectively UNlocking the
channel sliders. This happens seemingly at random; I cannot give any
other reproduction directions other than..: mess around with the sliders
a little bit -- drag them up and down, maybe not too quickly, but
smoothly, for a little bit and I believe it will happen.

It is also visually apparent that the sliders unlock because the button
with the chain links on it changes from linked together to apart.

I don't know whether this is a problem with gnome-volume-control or GTK
or what, but I chose gnome-volume-control because that's what I see.
There are also no error messages if I run gnome-volume-control in the
terminal, and:

$ gnome-volume-control --gtk-debug=all
Unknown option --gtk-debug=all

... apparently the man page for gnome-volume-control is a little bit
mistaken or something.

To reproduce this, you do not need to have any sound playing, but my
experience in testing this problem out is that it does occur more
frequently! So if you intend to try this for yourself, maybe have a song
or something playing in the background while sliding the sliders up and
down. Doesn't matter either which slider (left or right channel) or
which module you change.

This problem also occurs when using the scroll wheel to slide the
sliders.

Thanks for your time!
