[Bug 87805] Re: "users and groups" empty since upgrade
I have this problem, although not directly due to an upgrade. I had to reinstall 8.10 from scratch (upgrade from 8.04 was a bomb). I left my /home partition intact. I then attempted to restore my users' accounts and passwords by pasting lines from backed-up /etc/passwd, group, shadow, and gshadow files. I didn't replace the new file entirely from backup, just lines pertinent to my 1000+ uid users. Overall the operation appears to be a success; my users can log in and their files and settings are intact. But there are some odd side- effects, like my primary login (uid 1000) was removed from the admin group in the process. I'm pretty sure I didn't do that manually, but I had to boot up in recovery mode to re-add it. I'm pretty sure my messing around with those four files caused all my users to disappear from that window. So maybe I'm the bug in this scenario. [Bug 305678] [NEW] Unresponsive extract button with multi-part rar file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: file-roller This one is a little strange, but it is reproducible for me on my local setup. I open a multi-part rar file by double clicking the .r00 file, then I click extract. The default folder shown is the current directory, but when I click extract nothing happens - the button clicks but the dialog acts as though nothing happened. Other buttons work as expected; it's as though extract simply does nothing. What's even stranger is the workaround I've discovered: I can then use the same dialog to change the directory (eg going to the parent folder), and then I can go back to the same folder I was in. Then the extract button works fine. ** Affects: file-roller (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Unresponsive extract button with multi-part rar file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305678 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 305664] [NEW] gnome-terminal keyboard shortcuts don't allow change
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal In gnome-terminal could not get keyboard shortcuts to accept changes. Changes are ignored. My fix was to edit using gconf-editor. Change /apps/gnome-terminal/keybindings and change the fields there (copy, paste was all I wanted to change, but was not allowed to from just gnome-terminal) Default installation does not have directory ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/keybindings needs also it's one file %gconf.xml. [Bug 293207] Re: Conversion of existing mailboxes fails silently
Well I gave it another go a couple nights ago, but still had no joy, even with the new packages. I was working from a relatively freshly installed and up to date Intrepid virtual machine within VMWare Fusion on a MacBook. I deleted my .evolution folder and then restarted Evolution to generate a fresh .evolution folder. I then installed hggdh's new patch from PPA. (I didn't completely uninstall Evolution first. Not sure whether that would have made a difference.) I then tried to restore a fresh backup of my settings/email from my old Hardy virtual machine--which also lives within VMWare Fusion. Unfortunately, the restore step still did not complete. After killing the Evolution process, I saw that there were large Inbox and other files in my .evolution folder, so I tried deleting the index files within the .evolution folder and restarting. It looked like the migration was working, but it wound up getting hung at 11% completion. I let it sit for a half an hour or more but finally killed it again. I wound up taking a deep breath and simply running an upgrade of my old Hardy virtual machine to Intrepid. That worked like a charm. The migration took a while when I first started Evolution, but at least it completed. My email within the Intrepid machine is now working great. I still have my Intrepid test machine and am willing to try other things on that, but I'm up and running again in Intrepid on my old virtual machine, so I don't have a lot of incentive to fool around with this any more. Not sure whether it's relevant, but my old virtual machine is 64-bit, and the new one is 32-bit. Could that affect whether or not a back-up is able to be restored??? Without being an expert in this area, I understand this means that the resources of graphics card have been exhausted. I believe this can be seen by the end user e.g. by drastically reduced scrolling performance e.g. in a normal gnome terminal (but I have not investigated this claim very carefully). Anyway I think writing an error to a log file about once a second in a clean system is not acceptable. Further details Hardware: Laptop IBM T40 Graphics card: (--) PCI:*([EMAIL PROTECTED]:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] rev 2, Mem @ 0xe000/0, 0xc010/0, I/O @ 0x3000/0, BIOS @ 0x/131072 Software: a plain intrepid installation with all recommended updates and only 3 minor additional packages installed Work around: Go to System --> Preferences --> Appearance // Visual Effects and change the default setting "Normal" to "None" Without understanding much of that topic I made the following guesses: - The "Normal" visual effects of 2008 are just too heavy for an approximately 5 year old laptop. (I understand business laptops like this one are not optimized for graphics performance anyway) - Because the graphic card runs out of resources the error occurs continuously If my guesses are correct the only solution is that Ubuntu must recognize during installation (or at each boot), whether the graphics card is powerful enough to handle "Normal" visual effects. If not, they should be disabled by default, because the average user - will not read the log files, - will not understand what the error message [driAllocateTexture:636] means (nor do I) - and will not be able to draw the conclusion that visual effect should be disabled I further guessed that gnome-control-center might possibly be responsible for the default settings, because it allows the user to change the visual effects. If this guess was wrong, the bug needs to be redirected to another package, whoever is responsible for choosing the default value) (Of course if my guesses above that the visual effects will just not reasonably work on "such an old" laptop graphics card were wrong, it might be possible to correct the implementation of the visual effects. Then again, the bug should be redirected to whoever causes the error message) ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- continuous [driAllocateTexture:636] even when idle https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/305586 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 305604] [NEW] Failsafe login doesn't use failsafe resolution.
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Due to bug 304955, my screen resolution was set to something my monitor couldn't handle. To address this, I hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace to kill my X session. When I tried to log back in, the resolution changed, and the monitor displayed its "out of range" message. I killed the session again, and logged in under a "failsafe" session, which did the same thing. However, the terminal-only session did *not* change the resolution, and opened up a perfectly usable xterm. There was no way to fix the problem with the tools that created it; I eventually had to delete ~/.config/monitors.xml by hand to make my account usable again. What I expected: I expected that the failsafe login would use the known- good resolution used for the login screen and the terminal-only session, which would let me open up the Screen Resolution applet, and change it back to something my monitor could handle. What happened: Logging in used the resolution stored in ~/.config/monitors.xml, making that session just as unusable as the regular one. I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid; I don't know which package to file this against, but I'm quite willing to provide whatever information might be helpful. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Failsafe login doesn't use failsafe resolution. https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/305604 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: bluefish Kubuntu 8.10 desktop, LAMP configured, HP dv8000 laptop, ATI X200M video. After opening program, on any menu item, when selecting item, program crashes. The following output was produced at the terminal window: The program 'bluefish' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'. (Details: serial 5738 error_code 2 request_code 53 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. [Bug 303384] Re: don't display podcasts in the music library
I guess, since RB knows the provider and title of the podcast, it could compare artists and titles from the library with providers and titles from the registered podcasts, and not show in the library those which match. [Bug 305558] Re: vertical maximize when double clicking on titlebar
Make sure that in System/Preferences/Windows the dialog is set as in the screenshot. You get in System by clicking on the third menu at the top of your screen (next to applications and locations). Preferences is the first submenu, windows is the last menu from within preferences. Open a application window, say firefox. Make sure it is only part of the screen, so it may not be maximized. Double click on the titelbar, assuming you have used firefox, then the titlebar is where the text is "Your homepage's title - Mozilla Firefox". If it was working correct, then it should only maximise in the vertical direction, that means that the titlebar is now at the top of your screen and the statusbar in now at the bottom of your screen. Instead I get a full maximise, so it also gets maximized in the horizontal direction. This is an irritating but, especially on widescreen monitors. BTW, the dialog has the name gnome-window-properties (seen from the output of ps aux). ** Attachment added: "Schermafdruk.png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20239920/Schermafdruk.png -- vertical maximize when double clicking on titlebar https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305558 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 305580] [NEW] Alacarte does not allow removal of a single application entry
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: alacarte On latest Intrepid (at least my 64-bit system) it is impossible to remove any single application from "Applications" menu completely. It is possible to uncheck entries in Alacarte, so that they are not shown in menu, but removing an entry completely doesn't work. The "Remove" button, as well as "Remove" context menu item, works only on folders, but not on single entries. ** Affects: alacarte (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Alacarte does not allow removal of a single application entry https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305580 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to alacarte in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
