[Bug 311362] Re: [i965, Jaunty] Black screen after resume from suspend
It turns out that the black screen that I first saw, was actually the screensaver (which by default is a black screen). When I change the screensaver this is what comes up on the screen after resume from suspend. When I press a key the screen goes black and shows the mouse cursor in a glimpse before the screensaver is back. Killing the gnome-screensaver process makes the problem go away, and subsequent suspends and resumes work. This indicates that the bug may be in gnome-power-manager or something similar and not in xserver-xorg-video-intel as I first thought. ** Also affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Summary changed: - [i965, Jaunty] Black screen after resume from suspend + [i965, Jaunty] Black screen (or screensaver) after resume from suspend ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I have tried the Jaunty alpha-2 LiveCD on a Thinkpad X61 Tablet (965GM graphics chipset). Short descripton: After resume from suspend, the screen is black. The mouse cursor is briefly visible when I move it or when I press a key, but not otherwise. Ctrl-Alt-F2 successfully changes to a virtual terminal when I remove the boot options splash and quiet. Steps to reproduce: 1. Boot from Ubuntu Jaunty alpha-2 LiveCD 2. Remove the boot options splash and quiet (to be able to use VTs afterwards) 3. Choose System - Shut Down - Suspend (hot key suspend has other bugs reports associated, bug 306310, bug 307977, bug 307986) 4. Wait for a minute or two 5. Press the power button to resume from suspend Expected behaviour: After a few seconds the desktop would be visible. Actual behaviour: - The splash screen briefly flashes and the the screen remains black. Moving the mouse cursor makes it briefly visible, and the same does pressing a key on the keyboard. Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace does not kill the X-server. Ctrl-Alt-F2 changes to a virtual terminal. If the boot options are left unchanged, the VTs will only show the splash screen with some green corruption on top (slightly different for each VT). The VTs apparently remain otherwise functional as it is possible to reboot by writing `sudo reboot` blindly. + A VT (or the splash screen if enabled) briefly flashes and the the screen remains black. I have marked bug 307977 and bug 307986 as duplicates of this bug, and added the packages that those bugs were reported against. It seems to be a Lenovo Thinkpad specific problem, since Noel has a T61p (from the attached HalComputerInfo.txt), Marc has a X200s and Jeffrey has a X61 Tablet. I can also confirm on a X61 Tablet using a Jaunty alpha-2 LiveCD. [Bug 162124] Re: Should be able to set power preferences systemwide, eg. sleep on lid closed on gdm login screen
I consider this a serious bug. (Scenario 1: another laptop user logs out*, closes the lid, and you find yourself without any battery power for the rest of the day. Scenario 2: log out, close the laptop lid, pack in luggage and the laptop overheats.) There is a work-around fortunately. Edit /etc/acpi/event/lidbtn and change the action line to action=/etc/acpi/sleep.sh (The lid.sh script doesn't seem to do anything remotely useful. Surely default should be sleep.) * I've trained my niece to log herself out of machines when she's done so that other people won't use her account.
