[Bug 15442] Re: panels change their position between logins

2009-06-18 Thread Ed Lover
"So in gconf-editor go to apps->panel ->general and find the
corresponding entry for you in my case toplevel_id_list and reorder the
panels in the list in the order you want them to appear in this case the
first is at the edge of the screen."

Thank Odin, and thank you. After switching the order of ids in that
list, it worked! For the first time in literally years of using Gnome
in Ubuntu, I was able to have two panels at the bottom of the screen in
the order I specified.

[Bug 275762] Re: should detect that monitor was disconnected when waking from suspend

2009-06-18 Thread cgrushko
The same behaviour can be observed if the external monitor was not even enabled
before going to suspension, meaning:
1. connect external monitor, but do not configure it (it won't show anything)
2. Go to suspension and wake
3. The display will "jump" to the other monitor. (not only login - but
everything)

[Bug 389326] [NEW] SYSTEM hangs on increasing priority with g-s-m

2009-06-18 Thread k c davis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Tried to increase priority of a process using the gnome system monitor
(2.26.0.1). After clicking "change priority" the busy/wait wheel spins
but the system is totally hung; left it for 10+ minutes one time trying
to wait it out. Only way out I've found is to restart the box. It's
happened three consecutive times; twice on dragon player, third time on
g-s-m itself. I haven't the patience tonight to try it again. ( 9.04,
AMD 64) I don't often tinker with priorities, but I didn't see this
behavior with 8.04

This system has other hangs: _ sometimes_ on unlocking screen when bad
password tried, and it consistently takes a long time to open large
directories with nautilus, but then it's only nautilus that's
temporarily hung (both previously reported).

[Bug 389317] [NEW] Nautilus Bookmarks can't be removed

2009-06-18 Thread Paganini
Public bug reported:

Running Jaunty with Netbook Remix on my Asus EeePC 900A.

Selecting the "Edit Bookmarks" option from the Nautilus Bookmarks menu
allows me to allows me to remove the Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.,
folders and causes them to disapear from the netbook-launcher display.

This is what I want.

However, after a reboot, all the folders are back. Somehow nautilus is
not saving that they've been removed. I tried to figure out where
Nautilus saves the bookmark data, but no luck.

[Bug 299642] Re: Microphone Capture ALWAYS muted

2009-06-18 Thread Robert Ancell
Dr. Suave, could you confirm which mute button is causing the problem?

I have found a problem with the audio recording toggle button (The
microphone with the red X as shown in the attached screenshot) which
causes it to always be disabled when starting up. This button is only
shown for inputs in the "Recording" tab.

The mute button (the icon to the left of the microphone button) does not
seem to have any effect and is always set to not muted when I start. It
is not visible in alsamixer. The sound system has requested the volume
control application to show this button, I will investigate why this is.

[Bug 388777] Re: gnome-terminal doesn't handle keyboard resizing well

2009-06-18 Thread Michael Norrish
I can't reproduce the behaviour on the testuser at all. I also find
that I can only get the bad behaviour if I have the menu bar of the
terminal turned off. I also notice that the font on the testuser's
terminal is different from the one I'm getting, though we're both using
the "Use system default fixed font" option. I've attached screenshots
of the testuser's and my original terminal windows side by side. Why
should the fonts be different? (The michaeln account was created under
Ubuntu 8.10.)

[Bug 291259] Re: smb url don't work in the run application dialog

2009-06-18 Thread Alexandre Martani
Why I marked this as a paper cut:
This affects every user who access samba shares. As home networks are becoming
more common, and sharing files through samba is very common on these, this is
affecting many user. Also, many users from Windows are used to access samba
shares using "\\hostname" on command prompt (on Vista, this is even in the
start menu), so they see this as an annoyance (compared to Windows). As it is a
regression, old users also considers this as an annoyance.
It is very easy to address: the fix is in the comments, just adding a gconf
schema and it is gone. Even then, it affects both Intrepid and Jaunty. It is
also fits in "is small enough for users to become habituated to it", as you can
just start nautilus and type in its address bar, but this involves many more
actions.

[Bug 35223] Re: Laptop TFT monitor - brightness level is not saved

2009-06-18 Thread Martin Albisetti
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut
should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and
easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.
A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter

[Bug 388777] Re: gnome-terminal doesn't handle keyboard resizing well

2009-06-18 Thread Michael Norrish
I created a new user on my machine, and tried keyboard resizing in the
default environment. This worked fine, but then, it was all being done
with "appearance/visual effects" set to "normal", not "none". In
"normal" visual effects (some level of compiz, I guess), the window
resize is done with a shadow; only when you finish the operation by
hitting return does the real window resize.

In the buggy behaviour situation, the window itself is being dynamically
resized, and I guess something is failing to keep up with the constant
stream of size change requests. I will check that with my new user I
can turn appearance/visual effects to "none" and get the same buggy
behaviour.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-18 Thread Laco Gubík
Hi guys,

I think that there should be option to create your own toolbar in Nautilus.
Whatever we will put together will never 100% satisfy all users (especially
power users) and at the end linux is also about choice.
Evince and Eye of Gnome have this option (if you go to Edit -> Toolbar) and I
love it, you can add and remove icons as you prefer.

1. In my mockup, I have removed dropdown menu arrow from Back icon and
left only one next to Forward (there is no need to have two).

2. I have removed Up, Stop and Reload buttons, which are not so much
used. You can substitute Up with Back and Forward and also you have
bellow it breadcrumbs which allow you using one click to get up.

3. I have also removed Home icon which user has in sidebar (together
with other places) and I have moved Computer icon into sidebar. In my
mockup I have replaced File system entry with Computer, because I do not
believe that it makes sense to have both of them next to each other.
Plus File system is available from within Computer.

4. I have removed search icon but added search box which will make
search more usable and it is well known from web and browsers. Nautilus
search is very good so I think we should make it easier to use
(especially for search-dominant users).

5. I think that by default nautilus should always show at least one tab.
Right now lot of users might not realise that tabs in nautilus exist and
that they can use them. I have also added little button next to last tab
which will allow user to add new tab.

6. I'm not so sure where to put zoom icons, but I think this is good feature
and it adds to usability and accessibility, so it should be visible. In mockup
1 I have added them into tab toolbar and in mockup 2 I have moved them down to
status bar.
Alternative would be to have one more thiner toolbar under main toolbar with
zoom icons and I would also add there three icons to change view mode (icons,
list, compact) because there is no point in having toolbar with two icons.

Please feel free to comment on mockups.

[Bug 68924] Re: provide support for changing volume labels

2009-06-18 Thread David Siegel
** Description changed:

My old MP3MAN 1/2 gig mp3 player is able to be renamed in Windows but
not in Ubuntu. I'm not sure if this is something that all players can
do but it is something that could be well worth looking into (as I don't
have a windows machine my mate renamed mine and I have a new samsung
player now, for it's ogg support). Effectively in windows you right
click on the player icon and hit rename and the player retains that name
when you plug into any machine (I will send a screen shot) so mine now
says DAVES MP3 rather than mp3man.

This is not an urgent bug by any means but it is one thing I noticed
that can't yet be done. I want to see bug 1 stripped out as soon as
possible but it is always the little things that annoy people.
+
+ * From duplicate bug #388207, I add emphasis that volumes should be re-
+ namable using right-click. This may be obvious, but "let the record
+ show" that volumes should act like all other files with respect to
+ renaming.

I will not, by any means, dictate what you have to build or not, but I
hope at least you agree that serving the users with an "Operation not

does the job.

clarify, the issue which affects nautilus is that it does not query the
extensions via the info provider interface for xdg standard directories,
such as Documents, Music, Pictures.

[Bug 389118] Re: i can not play any video with totem movie player it stops at the first frame

2009-06-18 Thread Philip Muskovac
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in totem.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at

[Bug 194213] Re: Dim files when you 'cut' them for later 'paste' action

2009-06-18 Thread David Siegel
Here's a straightforward mockup of dimmed icons.

* Dimming effect is achieved by setting lightness to 100% on icons and/or
labels.
* Documents folder has dimmed icon, normal label and emblem.
* Templates folder has dimmed icon and emblem, normal label.
* Ubuntu One folder has dimmed icon, emblem, and label.
* Videos folder has dimmed icon, no emblem, normal label.
* Pictures folder has dimmed icon and label.

I think dimming icon, emblem, label is the most consistent approach. If
label lightness cannot be manipulated, we should set the label's status
to inactive. Perhaps this dimming effect can be achieved by setting all
widgets in the icon container to inactive?

[Bug 389184] [NEW] Ctrl+Delete operation is too greedy

2009-06-18 Thread RichUncleSkeleton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

The Ctrl+Delete action is too greedy, it deletes muc more than I expect
and more than any other application I have used.

In gedit, it seems to delete all non-alphanumeric characters, plus the
next "word". Normally this function only deletes one set of characters.
For example, if you have the string:

. a b

Then using Ctrl+Delete from the start of the line should only delete the
punctuation and space. In gedit, however, it also deletes the set of
a's.

Similar things happens for Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right - the cursor moves a
lot further than it should.

[Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-18 Thread ShawnJGoff
Really, the whole issue of unmounting a usbstick is not intuitive for
people. I know many people who still just yank the thing out when
they're done with it (even after warnings).

I believe the solution is to have a "soft unmount" after a device has
been idle for some amount of time (30 secs? 5 mins? I have no idea
what's appropriate). In this situation, a usb would be basically
unmounted, except that there is still a point on the file system which
can be accessed. If the user attempts to access that point, the disk is
remounted and seems as normal to the user (except possibly a couple
seconds delay).

As far as terminology, I think "unplug" or "detatch" is better than
"remove safely", which in turn is better than "unmount".

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2009-06-18 Thread Roman Polach
this patch http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=51170&action=view
changes only two lines, so it sounds pretty trivial for me.
Can anybody check if it would fix the problem and if it is correct?
Btw. this patch is 4 years old...

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-18 Thread ShawnJGoff
Buttons are too bulky for the breadcrumb. I'd prefer a different widget;
something that made them all look like part something, but independent
within. If anyone else shares the sentiment, I can make a mockup.

The zoom buttons in the statusbar is a good choice, as is the right-
aligned search textarea.
