I think it's a very bad idea.
In Windows this feature is horrible. You can rename very fast with F2.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper

2009-06-25 Thread Jordan
> I recommend Compress because all the participants could predict what

Was one of the understood reasons why they might use it to group many
files into one to send as an attachment, or to create a single file
backup of a directory? That seems to be the primary use for archives,
not to save space but to include many files in one. Also, in the future
( if / when btrfs is the default file system ) compression may be built
into the file system so you could compress a file or directory without
creating a separate file. What should a user look for to send multiple
files in an attachment when "compressing" them doesn't make that any
easier? I am not disagreeing with making the change for Karmic, just
noting some possible issues / questions.

[Bug 391978] Re: Clicking whit the right button in the root directory of any removable disc don't appears "volume" and "drive" menu

2009-06-25 Thread Diego
Hello Sebastien.

It's ever reproducible.
The difference between the windows appears:
window 1 (appears menu1.png, without the tab 'compartir' or share)- when I
click in the properties of any volume sited in the computer (as example,
running nautilus 'computer:///', clicking with the right button in any mounted
volume and selecting properties menu) or doing the same in any volume mounted,
but selecting from the desktop, where (if the configuration is ok, usually
it's) are the mounted volumes

window 2 (appears menu2.png, without the tabs "abrir con" or open with, drive
and volume)- when I click in the properties of the background, as example,
running nautilus '/media/disk', (where /media/disk need to be any mounted
volume), then right clicking and then clicking in the properties menu
window 3 (appears menu3.png)- when I try to see the properties of any unmounted
volume

Greetings!

[Bug 183486] Re: gnome-screensaver locks up randomly when unlocking screen

2009-06-25 Thread Josh Zenker
This was a problem for me in Hardy. Until recently, I did not see it in
Jaunty. However, today X became unresponsive twice when trying to
unlock from gnome-screensaver. Whenever this happens, I cannot even
switch to a different tty to kill X. My only way out is to use the
SysRq key combinations to TERM/KILL all processes, sync filesystems, and
reboot.

I haven't found anything useful in my log files.

I'm running the 64-bit 2.6.28-11-generic kernel on a ThinkPad X61. I
believe the chipset is in the Intel 915 family.

I have tried starting gnome-screensaver with the debug and no-daemon
options in the past, but it never seemed to lock up when running that
way. It's quite frustrating. I'm on the verge of canning gnome-
screensaver and going to xscreensaver.

[Bug 391972] [NEW] Artifact on wallpaper under GNOME using metacity and xv output

2009-06-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Some artifacts can be seen on the GNOME wallpaper while using metacity
and a XV output.

How to reproduce this bug:

- Use a dark wallpaper
- play some move (or music with visualisation turned on) on one Desk
- Go to another desk
=> you will be able to see artifacts on the wallpaper at the place where the XV
output is on the other Desk (for more artifacts, maximize your XV output window)

NB: you can also open a gnome terminal (with tranparent-background set
on), and you will be able to see more artifcats through the gnome
terminal.

This problem deos not occurs with compiz, but I am not really sure from which
package it can come from .
This bugs appeared in Jaunty.

[Bug 392381] [NEW] Copying from FTP in Nautilus gvfs FTP backend freezes (in Jaunty)

2009-06-25 Thread mabawsa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

This bug has previously been reported Bug #366073. It is fixed in Karmic.
The fixes outlined in the bug should be backported to Jaunty.
Opening up a new bug as per the request of Sebastien Bacher.

Summary of bug:

Actually there are 2 bugs in one, might be related:
First, when logging in to my FTP, the 1st attempt always fails and then logging
in works as expected. After that I can upload and delete files, but I can not
copy files from FTP to my laptop. It stays like the attached picture, even

[Bug 344060] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in _XiGetDevicePresenceNotifyEvent()

2009-06-25 Thread aaron
Hi all, I have a similar problem under vnc, the gnome theme is messed up and if
I open the appearance window, it will crash session. The following work around
works for me:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/199245
by disabling keyboard plugin with gconf-editor at
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/keyboard.
The same happens under fedora 11 too and the workaround also works for fedora
11.

[Bug 392375] [NEW] nautilus icon caption color not updating upon change of view mode

2009-06-25 Thread AndrewHarvey4
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In nautilus I have the background color set to Onyx (greyish) for Icon
view (the icon caption (filenames text) are made white automatically). I
open a directory in nautilus and it defaults Icon view, I then change to
List view (which has a lighter background, and black icon caption text)
then back to Icon view. But now the icon text labels which show the file
name are black (not white like they were when I first opened the window)
on the grey background. Changing the background color to something else,
then back to Onyx fixes the text color.

I'm using Nautilus 2.26.2

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-25 Thread Michael Dittmann
I just registered to discuss on this problem as well...
...because I see some neutral perspective missing. In this issue there is a lot
to consider:

1st) is this feature disturbing to anyone?
answer: to some people it is

2nd) is this feature a useful one?
answer: arguable. on windows there are 4 ways to rename: right-click,
edit-menu, 2nd-click, F2.

2.1 Let's say it is useful if a couple of users do like the 2nd-click way more
than the other ways. (People don't essentially like that way more, because they
do it this way) (- and no doubt, some use the 2nd-click way)
if - applying to 2.1 - it is useful, then everybody might agree that (at least
as an option) this feature should be implemented.

2.1.1 must be mentioned, if we go by 2.1: if it's not useful according to 2.1
there is still the question if people, who use the 2nd-click method, know/find
another method (quickly).
may 2.1 apply or not, if 2.1.1 applies then the feature must essentially be
default due to accessibility. (everybody agrees?)

3rd) if the user has icons-, list- or context view enabled plays a role on the
feeling of the feature.
the problem mentioned in (1) may (almost) not apply to people using the icons
view. (everybody agrees?)

now just in case the feature will be introduced. according to (1) it
will not be obligatory. issues to discuss (After 1-3) are:

4th) 4 is about Gnome: one of the Gnome ideas is to have as little settings gui
as possible and make detail settings accessible via gconf. Is the 2nd-Click
option worth another settings menu entry? (If it is not it would merge with the
single-double-click option as 2nd-Click is barely possible with single-Click
enabled)
AnsWer: in case of 4.1 it is. if 4.1 is not the case 4.1.1 must be discussed.

4.1 May any of both cases be default - Will it be a very lot users who would
like to change the default option?
(answer according to assumption below: it will not.)

4.1.1 Do the few people who like to change the option know about gconf?
AnsWer: In case of the windows-like style being default. not many newbies will
be likely to change the option, either because they think "in linux there must
be a way to turn this off..." (i guess, that will not happen as there are other
things to care about) or because they find that option when browsing the
settings. so nobody, not knowing gconf, will miss this option. on the one hand
some people might like finding exactly this option in the settings, on the
other hand the menus get more crowded by it. 4.1.1 is about discussing a lot :P
AnsWer: In case of the 2nd-Click being disabled by default (so also 2.1.1 does
not apply) more people will like to change this, because some do want to handle
the system the way they learnt
sorry for 4.1.1 being that long and not all too important.

5th) What is ought to be the default? (hey, that rimes :D)
answer: most probably 2nd-Click should be default, because it not being default
seems unlikely: 2.1 must apply and 2.1.1 not and my idea at (7) must be
unappropriate and even if these three fallacies apply it is still worth a
discussion to decide for 2nd-Click not being default.

(I leave out number 6 to have some distance to number 7)
7th) A bit another idea might be to have the 2nd-Click option stuck to the
folder view option (and, of cause, to the single-double-click option).
disadvantage: if someone inspects the 2nd-Click solution (which is unlikely to
happen) he'll find weird dependencies.
the dependencie would be to have 2nd-Click turned off on compact- and list
view. the people who usually use these views are likely to use right-click or
F2 as they may be more advanced users and don't want to wait for the
Double-Click time to expire. If someone has double-click activated and icon
view active, also 2nd-Click might be present. In the icon view one is unlikely
to click on the label (as assumed in earlier posts) and by making the cursor
look like the 'editing-cursor' when moving over the label of an marked item, we
could supply good understanding of the system's handling.

hope, you like that structure, hope, that structure helps.
now my opinion:
i guess the gnome-veterans are likely to have double-click turned off and
single-click turned on. so the issue only affects gnome-newbies. (and if i
guess wrong: most gnome-veterans might be capable of using gconf)
(some) newbies might be used to rename files by the "2nd-Click way" and should
have an light-weight settings-menu. so i would keep the settings-menu
light-weight and do not include an extra option. and the ones who don't like
the 2nd-Click can turn it off.
however, the most important thing in my imagination is to keep the menu
light-weight!
ok, and my dream would be, to have single-click default. btw (;
[tiny] for the BB. for the Bloody Beginners. sorry, finally i lost my
earnestness (: [\tiny]

assumption from 4.1: I assume that those ones who were not happy about
the 2nd-Click way in windows are likely to choose th

[Bug 392364] [NEW] gnome-terminal asks to close even when no process running

Thank you for your bug report. This bug (comments and patch) has been
reported to the developers of the software. You can track it and make

It would be best to continue discussions on the patch in GPM over int he

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-25 Thread Brett Alton
I don't even like how Firefox has no labels on its buttons (e.g. "Home",
"Back", etc.) while the rest of Gnome (a.k.a. Nauitlus) has labels
(preferences set at System > Preferences > Appearance > Interface >
"Text Below Items"... even if Firefox ignores this).

The reason Firefox ignores these preferences (e.g. takes away the
text/labels) is for more screen space on the user's screen.

I'm in favour of getting rid of Firefox bookmark toolbar and bringing
back the text below the icons, bringing both Firefox and Gnome/Nautilus
in harmony.

The minimal Nautilus David is suggesting reminds me of the old style of
Nautilus Ubuntu used to ship with (see my Wikipedia screenshot at:

desktop-2-410-20080706.png)

often miss that function. Compact view behavior would be what I need.

[Bug 333910] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID()

2009-06-25 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for all the help - I'm sure there are many GNOME and Ubuntu users
who are grateful!

You're right, Ubuntu 9.04 uses GPM 2.24, which included Revision #2551.

http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-power-manager/branches/gnome-2-24/src
/gpm-cell-array.c?view=log

Therefore, Ubuntu 2.24 should have the fix included.

As a sanity check, would it be possible to try a Karmic Live CD to see
if you could reproduce the crash? It appears that later versions of GPM
interface with gnome-phone-manager differently.

  * add patch to fix ftbfs with gcc 4.4 (s/elif/else/)
- add debian/patches/ftbfs_gcc44_elif.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * fix LP: #345189 - thunderbird 2 treats pixel sized system fonts as
if they were point sized, which causes for to HUGE fonts
- add debian/patches/lp345189_absolute_font_sizing.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * fix LP: #137221 - thunderbird-gnome-support package required for
gnome capabilities; the gnome parts were always loadable modules and
fail to load gracefully if depends cannot be fulfilled anyway; in turn
we ship gnome components in the main thunderbird package and apply a bit
magic in debian/rules to strip the gnome related dependencies from it;
on top of this thunderbird-gnome-support becomes an empty package which gets
all the dependencies for convenience; the purpose of new gnome-support is
hence to install all required depends; in order to add the required depends
to the gnome-support package we introduce a new substvar
"shlibs:GnomeShlibs"
and refer to it in control
- remove debian/thunderbird-gnome-support.install
- update debian/rules
- update debian/control
  * the change for LP: #137221 moves files from thunderbird-gnome-support to
thunderbird package; adding Replaces to thunderbird package accordingly
- update debian/control
  * fix LP: #145716 - panel launcher breaks on upgrade; we provide a
compatibility link for the old mozilla-thunderbird binary
- update debian/thunderbird.links
  * drop not used control.in from debian/ dir
- remove debian/control.in
  * pick up latest nspr (>= 4.7.4) to potentially fix armel build (LP: #385325)
- update debian/control

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-25 Thread kikl
I just opened a folder with nautilus. The folder contained 87 images and
two videos. The folder is located on a server connected to this computer
over a standard wifi connection. The thumbnails of the folder were
displayed practically instantly in the nautilus file manager. Therefore,
I think this is a non-issue for most users.

Whoever wants stop/refresh buttons on the GUI, should have the option
using a customizable interface.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-25 Thread perriman
I think the unique reason of the "rename on click" feature is because
some users are accustomed to that on windows.

If you have never used windows: Do you think when you click a file, wait
a bit and click again will rename a file? I think not, it is illogical.
You can think it shows a preview of a file, unselect it but.. rename the
file???

I think it is a very bad idea

You can do this by mapping Super_L to Meta in your keyboard layout

[Bug 391757] Re: Nautilus hangs when clicking on preview images

2009-06-25 Thread Friedrich Graeter
I analyzed the problem and found out, that it does not seem to be a
problem with the images I try to open.

The problem seems to be a complex SVG file that got visited when I
browse to the destination directory of the image.

I checked the debugger output of gdb and I saw, that nautilus start a
new thread whenever I visit the directory with this SVG file. But
because this SVG file is really complex, this thread doesn't terminate
in an apropriate time. When I open another image without this thread to
be terminated, nautilus hangs...

(Perhaps, because it waits for a lock to be released by the thread that
creates the SVG preview)

Unfortunately I can't disclose this SVG file by now. But it is
apparently very complex - Inkscape needs a lot of memory and time to
render it. So perhaps the SVG thumbnailing mechanism of nautilus has to
be prevented to thumbnail complex images...

[Bug 54024] Re: WIN key should be mapped to Applications menu

2009-06-25 Thread Sam Stenvall
Currently I have it set up so that when I press the Super key, all
windows are minimized. This is ONLY because it is not possible to create
a keyboard shortcut like Super+D (which would be the Windows equivalent
to minimizing all windows and focusing on the desktop). Thus, I think
this is just a wishlist item and not a real papercut bug.

What I, and probably many others too, would like is the ability to
create keyboard shortcuts that use the Super key as a combo key (like
Super+D to minimize all windows, Super+L to lock the screen etc.). Why
couldn't we just make all the standard Windows shortcuts the same on
Ubuntu?

I don't know about you guys, but after using Windows for many many years
you grow used to hitting Windows+D to minimize your open windows, and
when that same command doesn't work in Ubuntu, you get frustrated. On
top of that, the fact that you CANNOT mimic the same behaviour is even
more frustrating.

[Bug 194213] Re: Dim files when you 'cut' them for later 'paste' action

2009-06-25 Thread Chriki™
Another idea could be to add further emblems to the icons of copied/cut
files. In the simplest case this could be the stock icons for copy/cut
(usually a pair of documents/a pair of scissors). I’ve quickly created
another mockup showing this (based on Daniel‘s above – sorry for
hijacking the screenshot …).

Probably some design person will find ways to further improve this idea,
e.g., by adding some striking background color to the little emblem.
Unfortunately I have no idea how easy this would be to implement … maybe
the existing emblem infrastructure could be used for this?

[Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-25 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
As you can see if you read the whole history of the upstream bug, this
problem should be mostly fixed in the current development version. David
Zeuthen and Alexander Larsson have improved the behavior of Nautilus so
that removable devices have an "eject" option that unmounts all of its
volumes and performs some hardware actions (power, get out a disk...) if
needed. The "unmount" term is only used if several partitions are
present on the disk and you want to remove only one, which will only
happen if you are already using a relatively complex environment.

There's also a mockup suggesting to make partitions children of the device,
which is not implemented:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=136310&action=view

Though, I think this papercut is solved, since I don't believe we can
completely avoid the term "unmount" when we're dealing with really
technical contexts. For standard cases it's now hidden.

I think gnome-bugs #540788
() is related, if not
exactly the same. If anybody's grovelling around in the code, could they
take a peek at this as well?

>From my comment on gnome-bugs:

"This bug drives me nuts on a fairly regular basis, I think the usual scenario
is when you want to save a file in the parent directory of the default
directory (the one which is displayed when the file selector is first shown):
clicking on the parent in the path bar (is that the right terminology?) changes
directory but leaves the subdir selected, so clicking save changes to the
subdir instead.

However, this doesn't happen consistently - it's only a problem if the focus is
on the file list and not the file name entry box, and I don't understand why
this is sometimes different. Is it something to do with the application
behaviour?"

2009-06-25 Thread mac_v
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper
cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is
quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of
this project.

This is not a papercut, But a feature request, Though a useful one.
Also papercuts are for minor issues in Karmic.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would
encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu
9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read >
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the
papercuts project.

For resolution of the bug, kindly identify the projects affected and
assign the bug to that project, otherwise the devs of the concerned
project might not be notified of this problem.

I also prefer this solution, glad to hear it is the one being
considered. The user is very likely to understand and recognize their
own username and it doesn't need to be translated. Plus it will be
consistent with the actual directory structure of /home/username!

[Bug 159042] Re: Nautilus is very slow in list mode with Assistive Technologies enabled (at-spi)

2009-06-25 Thread Benny
Can this bug be linked to upstream:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419383

A workaround (??) for apps is given there, however, not very
satisfactory. Unattaching the model and reattaching after every little
change is not what the GTK API says.

[Bug 159042] Re: Nautilus is very slow in list mode with Assistive Technologies enabled (at-spi)

2009-06-25 Thread jerryb
The way ATK affects GTK apps is a real blocker for me. I vote strongly
to have it disabled by default. It is certainly easy to enable with the
Assistive Technologies applet, for those who really need it.
