[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
In response to Jim: This feature is not annoying TO YOU. I'll thank you not to speak on behalf of myself or others. While you may find this difficult to do accidentally, I find it quite easy to trip over. Maybe different people have different mouse-clicking patterns, such that some people trigger it more often than others. I often find myself clicking the mouse for no specific purpose, just as a general part of my thought process, in the same way that someone might fiddle with a button on their shirt or stir their coffee even when its not necessary. There are enough people speaking out against this 'feature' that it seems rather foolish to make the unqualified claims -- that it is not annoying and that it is difficult to trigger accidentally -- without providing something more than your own counter-anecdote in reply. -- Cannot rename by clicking on a file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
I agree with nitindb. I never liked this behaviour in windows, because I quite often mistakenly started editing the file name. Therefore, I would like to be able to turn the feature off if it is implemented. It's only a usability issue because many windows users have gotten used to it. I don't think it's a good solution on its own. -- Cannot rename by clicking on a file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 315782] Re: Change of capitalization in filenames on FAT32
It is correct that the kernel is that gating issue for making this change. There are technical issues that make the change difficult. The rename syscall is defined to be atomic to fix race and consistency problems with the original link+unlink behavior. Making an attempt to fix it in userspace, such as glibc or the application(s) breaks this requirement because the implementation would be equivalent to the original link+unlink. In addition, vfat requires an 8.3 alias name to also be created for compatiblility with the even older FAT filesystem. This makes it even more ugly. The 8.3 alias can be hidden in the vfat layer but it can have only one long name associated with it. The layers above don't know anything about this alias or the case insensitivity because, for the multiple other filesystems, it doesn't have to. All of these issues are solvable problems but a correct solution would have to invade all of the other filesystems and the upper (vfs) layer with case sensitive/insensitive state to work. This gets very ugly very fast. The long and short of it is that the way UNIX/Linux handles case- insensitive filesystems is a compromise and every compromise involves giving up something. Making an atomic rename work correctly and cleanly in a pre-emptible, multi-cpu kernel where case sensitivity is the deeply embedded rule requires some things to go over the side, the issue in this bug being one of them. All in all, the compromises UNIX/Linux has had to make to accomodate these filesystems (VMS, MS, etc) have been better than the ones these other systems have tried to make to accomodate UNIX/Linux. The chance of getting this change in the kernel is extremely slim on a number of grounds. The filesystem maintainers argued this down on technical merit 10+ years ago and have no interest in reopening the issue again. Without their support, and by extension, Linus's support, such a change would go nowhere. Some things we just have to live with. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- Change of capitalization in filenames on FAT32 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/315782 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 392746] [NEW] gnome-settings-deamon autorepeat key problem in Autodesk Maya
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon System: Ubuntu 9.04 x64 Hi, I have a problem in Autodesk Maya 2009 in jaunty. With this problem is impossible to work, you need to rename objects continuously. example: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1138112 Searching, I found that there was a problem with the command xset r off in gnome. [Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
Most Windows users expect to be able to rename by clicking the file name. And since most computer users right now are Windows users, it would wise to cater to some of the things they are used to. Unless, of course, you have somewhere else to get users from... Also, this features is NOT annoying. In fact, it's difficult to accidentally do. First you have to highlight the file, then you have to click the file name to change it. So it takes two clicks. Clicking the icon will not activate it. When I first switched to Ubuntu, it was annoying not to have this feature. I had to right-click on everything to rename it until I randomly read somewhere that you can press F2. [Bug 69577] Re: Don't edit files
There are two ways to rotate a JPEG: you can either re-encode the entire image, or you can set an EXIF tag that says "when you display this image, rotate it by 90 degrees.". f-spot does the latter, which I think is probably the less intrusive way. The original problem reported was that a camera would not read the images after f-spot had rotated the images. If you remove the 'Software' EXIF tag that f-spot adds, does the camera still refuse to open the files? You can remove the tag by installing the exif package and running this command in a terminal window: exif --ifd=0 --tag=0x0131 --remove filename.jpg Replace filename.jpg with the name of the file you want to change. Best take a backup first. If you would rather that f-spot never edited files, what would you like to happen when you want to rotate the file, which does require the contents of the file to change? [Bug 392283] Re: it's just possible to print the current month
Sorry!... reading what i wrote I understand perfectly... I hope the following explanation will be enough in evolution mail: - click on calendar (for me, in italian "Calendario") - in the sidebar on the left select month clicking on the left arrow to join july (for me "luglio") and then click on the first of july and drag to 31. after this I have selected the days between 29 of june to 2 of september - click on file - print preview (for me "file - anteprima di stampa") I expected to see a preview reporting as title "july" (id est "luglio"), and days between 29 of june to 2 of september, but i have "june" (giugno) as title, and days between 1 of june to 12 of july. (schermata1.png) then: - click on file - setup page (file - impostazioni pagina) - click on landscape (orizzontale) - in the sidebar on the left select month clicking on the left arrow to join july (for me "luglio") and then click on the first of july and drag to 31. - click on file - print preview (for me "file - anteprima di stampa") Now I see a rotated page (readable from left) titled July ("Luglio") ** Attachment added: "Schermata1.png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28442016/Schermata1.png -- it's just possible to print the current month https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392283 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 282102] Re: F-spot displays a crossed box in slideshow
This one would be quite difficult to fix; the problem is that it is unsafe to rename photo files that f-spot knows about. If f-spot scanned the entire photo directory structure to look for renamed photos every time it started, it would make life unpleasant for people like me who have 7,000 photos ;-) You can send people emails with nice meaningful file names without changing the file name of the original file. Here's one way to do it: Select a photo, or photos, within f-spot Photo -> Send by Mail If Evolution is your mail client, you can right-click on each image, choose Properties and change the file name. It would be nice to be able to rename photos from within f-spot, but we'll have to wait until someone finds the time to add the feature. -- F-spot displays a crossed box in slideshow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282102 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I am experiencing something related to this bug (specifically Alexander Sack's wontfix in #43) using UNR Karmic Alpha 2 on an Acer Aspire One.
