[Bug 420810] [NEW] gnome-about-me picture does not appear at login

2009-08-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm using Ubuntu Karmic Alphpa 4 and under System/Preferences there is a
tool called About Me (i.e., gnome-about-me). In the upper left-hand
corner there is a Select your photo option that allows you to set a
picture for your profile. However, when I select a photo (picked one
from the list presented to me), I still get the same default icon at the
login screen instead of the one I selected.

I enabled encrypted home folders at install if that matters.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at

2009-08-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When logging in the two windows Unlock Keyring and Authenticate appear.
Unlock Keyring is behind the Authenticate (mount /dev/sda2) window, but has
the cursor in its input field.

You can't get the cursor into the Authenticate input field (or any other) and
can't switch to Unlock Keyring using Alt+Tab.
You either have to type your Unlock Keyring password blind or bring it to the
front by selecting it in the taskbar.
After that you can enter the password in the Authenticate window.

1)
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

3)
I expect the cursor to be in the foremost window's input field.

[Bug 421141] [NEW] mixer applet addresses wrong device

2009-08-29 Thread Joshua Turner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

When several identical USB sound devices are connected, volume changes
in the mixer applet only affect the device with the lowest ALSA hw:
ID.

In my particular case, each participant in a podcast recording session
is using an identical Logitech headset and DSP.

The expected behaviour is that each device would be listed and managed
appropriately.

What actually happens is that although each device is listed in the
Device: dropdown of the Volume Control window, all of the entries
refer to the first device, and changes made to the setting are applied
to the first device, regardless of which one is selected.

On the console, alsamixer works appropriately when passed each device's
hw: ID as a parameter. Gnome-alsamixer also works as expected.

[Bug 106644] Re: MASTER Clipboard gets lost when windows is closed

2009-08-29 Thread pyrates
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 11334 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334

The design of the clipboard isn't rocket science here. Implement it
according to the way Windows does it. If an application wants to use
the selection method of copy and pasting, then it takes over the ctrl+c
ctrl+x ctrl+v shortcuts since it's most likely a terminal application.
But most other applications are not and the selection method should
therefore be disabled in the main clipboard implementation.

You may think you save time using the selection method, but it is NOT
intuitive. And we wonder why at the beginning of every year someone
announces that this year will be the year of the linux desktop and yet
it fails to come true. This is why. Users expect stuff to be working
properly and this is an example of something not working properly and
the developers not caring enough because it works the way they want it
to work and that's what matters to them. It doesn't matter to them that
to most end users, it is broken and not working.

[Bug 421177] [NEW] Units are wrong and internally inconsistent

2009-08-29 Thread Endolith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus continues to use the wrong definition for units like megabyte
and gigabyte, following the broken Microsoft convention of units like MB
= 1024×1024 bytes instead of the standard 1000×1000 bytes.

The power-of-two convention needlessly confuses users, contradicts the
standard meaning of the prefixes, and serves no logical purpose. (It
only simplifies calculations in the context of memory, which naturally
comes in powers of two. For anything else, like a file manager, it just
adds an extra layer of complexity.) It's inconsistent with other apps,
with the way hard drives, flash drives, DVDs, and other media are
measured, and even inconsistent with itself, as shown in the attached
image.

A 160,041,885,696 byte hard drive should be displayed as 160.0 GB.
A 4,700,372,992 byte DVD should be displayed as 4.7 GB, and you should be
able to fit 1,000 4.7 MB files on it.
A 328,000 byte file should be displayed as 328 kB.

Even Apple has started doing it right. (http://blog.macsales.com/1852
-snow-leopard-changes-they-way-we-look-at-gigabytes-and-megabytes-and-
kilobytes-as-well) This is the *file manager*. It should show file
sizes using the correct, intuitive units that users expect.

[Bug 204567] Re: Downloads should go to ~/Downloads

2009-08-29 Thread Conn
Martin  Sebastien,

I'd just like to point out that the original proposal which was approved
included the words [...] and this folder should be bookmarked in
nautilus by xdg-user-dirs-gtk.

If Ubuntu One is also destined to be added to xdg-users-dir-gtk (I don't
see evidence of this on Karmic as of today), this is going to be a
problem that will need some kind of resolution. If patching the panel's
limit is not an option, then perhaps you should reconsider whether it is
appropriate to add the Downloads and/or Ubuntu One bookmark.

Click my name in gdm, then note the keyboard layout is wrong, so hit the
drop down, then spend a little while perusing the list. When I finally
choose a keyboard I'm dumped back to gdm with an 'Authentication
failure' message. I guess the logon timed out, but it's not a nice
message.

[Bug 421217] [NEW] Long keyboard layout names mess the panel layout up

2009-08-29 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Fresh install of karmic from todays live iso.

On gdm logon screen I can choose layouts from the list, and doing so
adds them to a quicklist. However doing so results in a messed up panel
if any of the layout names are quite long (which some are). Screenshot
to follow. Note I'm running at a fairly conservative 1024x768 and it's
nudged stuff horizontally off the panel.

If it isn't rocket science for you, why don't you write a patch to fix it?
Most Ubuntu developers aren't paid for their work, they do it voluntarily.
And the number of Ubuntu devs isn't infinite.
Comments such as yours won't help fixing this bug.

[Bug 419434] Re: X server fails with DRI : drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -22

2009-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command in a terminal after
reproducing the issue, and it it will automatically gather debugging
information needed for this bug:

  apport-collect 419434

Also, it sounds like this bug is an error-exit. For this we will need
to see the appropriate gdm log file, found in /var/log/gdm/ - pick the
one that includes the error message, or just include all the recent logs
if in doubt.

I may need to have you collect a backtrace for Xorg, but for now let's
start by seeing what's in the gdm log exactly.

[Bug 327872] Re: Missing support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2009-08-29 Thread Geekkit
 As the ffmpeg developers do not follow nor even notice bugs
 launchpad, and additionally have clear instructions for reporting such
 bugs (which are clearly not followed here), I don't see what we as
 ubuntu developers can do about this bug other than asking the submitters
 to follow the ffmpeg upstream's bug submission guidelines
 (i.e. submitting a proper example file).

Pretend you're me for a minute (Joe User) and you think you might have a
high level understanding of the process (but you most likely do not).
You take the time to file a bug because you see this as a way to
contribute to the Ubuntu project.

Then you're told that you did it wrong, your bug is closed and no
feedback given as to how to do it right. Imagine how interested you'll
be the next time you see an opportunity to help make Ubuntu better.

Seriously, how am I suppose to know that ffmpeg developers don't come
here? How am I suppose to know _where_ to visit the ffmpeg upstream bug
submission site? How am I suppose to know what the ffmpeg upstream bug
submission guidelines are?

Anyways, cheers. I gave up on this whole bug a few months ago, stopped
donating money to Canonical, got smart and realized that if I want to
have proper media support, that I'd need to purchase a Mac.

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-08-29 Thread xtknight
Here's a workaround for firefox:

sudo apt-get install xclip

Edit /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.2/firefox.sh (or equivalent)
Put this line after #!/bin/sh :

python /home/$USER/clipwrap.py

# Save this (for example) to /home/$USER/clipwrap.py

#Copy from the clipboard:
import os
import time
s = ''

while True:
curs = os.popen('xclip -selection c -o').read()
if len(curs)0:
s=curs
else:
wcl = os.popen('ps ax|grep firefox|grep -v grep|wc -l').read()
if wcl[0]=='0':
break
time.sleep(.15)

os.popen('echo \%s\ | xclip -selection c' % s)
#EOF

#Limitations are that it only works with firefox, and if anything else
in ps ax matches firefox, it won't detect when firefox ends. Yeah, this
could be better, but it's a proof of concept right now. This wrapper
also only starts if something is on the clipboard to begin with. And
you can adjust the sleep. Right now it wakes up every 150ms. That's bad
for laptops or low-power machines. This needs to be fixed higher up on
the source chain. I'll try to make a better workaround too.

[Bug 369092] Re: Ubuntu Jaunty. two seconds delay on incoming voice with ekiga

2009-08-29 Thread Stefan
Hi,
I did experience the same audio delay beheaviour using combi jaunty/ekiga 3.2.0
However I have a solution/workaround for that by using Open Sound System rather
than ALSA
Make sure that OSS is installed on jaunty:

sudo apt-get install libpt-plugins-oss
sudo dpkg --list |grep oss
ii  libao2 0.8.8-4ubuntu1
Cross Platform Audio Output Library
ii  libflac++6 1.2.1-1.2
Free Lossless Audio Codec - C++ runtime libr
ii  libflac8   1.2.1-1.2
Free Lossless Audio Codec - runtime C librar
ii  libpt-1.10.10-plugins-oss  1.10.10-2ubuntu3
Portable Windows Library Audio Plugins for t
ii  libpt2.6.1-plugins-oss 2.6.1-0ubuntu4
PTLib audio plugin for the OSS Interface
ii  libqca2-plugin-ossl0.1~20070904-3
QCA OSSL plugin for libqca2
ii  libwavpack14.50.1-1
an audio codec (lossy and lossless) - librar

Make sure that jaunty uses OSS as default audio system.I use KDE 3.5.10 to
configure that in:
system settings/sound system/hardware/select audio device

Make sure (after restarting EKIGA) to select OSS output rather than ALSA
I select output device: /dev/dsp1 (PTLIB/OSS) and input device : /dev/dsp1
(PTLIB/OSS)
It works convenient and I don't experience this long sound output delay anymore
for incoming speech to my Plantronics USB headset

Something must be wrong with EKIGA vs ALSA support. Long live OSS!

[Bug 420308] Re: [regression] Cannot enable Compiz from gnome-appearance-properties

2009-08-29 Thread Thomas Trummer
Updated version:

#include X11/extensions/Xcomposite.h
#include gdk/gdk.h
#include gdk/gdkx.h

// gcc -g intel.c -o intel-test `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 gdk-2.0`
`pkg-config --libs gtk+-2.0 gdk-2.0`

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
gdk_init(argc, argv);

while(1)
{
GdkScreen *default_gdk_screen = gdk_screen_get_default();

if (!default_gdk_screen)
return 0;

printf(%s\n,
gdk_x11_screen_get_window_manager_name(default_gdk_screen));

gtk_main_iteration_do (FALSE);
}
}

It seems that gdk_x11_screen_get_window_manager_name actually works,
but takes too long to switch and the 8s timeout kicks in. I've also
installed 1:2.26.0-1ubuntu4 and it is the first version that shows this
behaviour.

[Bug 421292] [NEW] Wrong legend 'log in' for already-logged-in user

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Clicking on the indicator applet, New Session.. I get a logon screen
(as expected). It shows a green tick next to my name showing I am logged
