[Bug 464458] Re: Music Stops Playing Randomly

2009-10-31 Thread Zeroth Eksaz
This is probably not related to my bug submission so I don't know how
relevant this information is. But, one change I noticed after changing
my sound Profile is that now when I use the mouse to move the primary
volume bar on the sound icon in the system tray my audio actually
changes this time as before it didn't. Before the only volume bars that
had any effect on altering sound where the Alert volume and the volume
bars in the Applications tab when music/video software is running.

[Bug 464458] Re: Music Stops Playing Randomly

2009-10-31 Thread Zeroth Eksaz
I was able to forcefully reproduce the error instead of waiting for it
to happen on it's own. Of course I was running Banshee at the time I
did this. I'll need to try this in Rythmbox and Songbird later to
confirm a theory. What I did was I started up Banshee and started
playing some music. I right clicked the speaker icon in the system tray
and clicked Sound Prefernces. Under the Hardware tab I changed the
Profile from "Analog Stereo Duplex" to "Digital Stereo (IEC958) Input"
just to see what would happen and simultaneously causing the error to
happen in Banshee. I just changed the Profile to "Digital Stereo
(IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input". I'll have to see how long my
music remains playing. I'll report back if it freezes or not. Right
now my belief is that the bug isn't in Rhythmbox but in the new sound
system 9.10 is using as this issue effects not just Rhythmbox but also
Banshee and Songbird. These 3 programs are the only ones I've tested so
far so I can't speak for other music programs. As for Totem it seems
totally unaffected by the issue.

[Bug 458883] Re: [users-admin] deleting a user doesn't work

2009-10-31 Thread Jaime Fernando Ortega Culaciati
Yeah applying the patch (submitted by Ricardo) to the source of
system-tools-backends works very nice.
This is what i did:
1.- sudo apt-get source system-tools-backends and decompress it.
2.- sudo patch /home/jfoc/system-tools-backends-2.8.2/Users/Users.pm <
../Descargas/fix-deleting-users.patch
3.- sudo ./configure && sudo make && sudo make install
4.- Delete an user using users-admin.
5.- close or restart, and you'll see that the user you've tried to delete is
gone.

I have this issue as well; fresh install, 9.10 release, amd64, Dell

things with disk partitions?). Glad to see it's actually -not-

[Bug 457539] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_set_valist()

2009-10-31 Thread Michael George
I think this is the same bug I experienced. Not sure if this is
relevant, but this is the first time I was able to get sound after
upgrading to Karmic. I upgraded, had no sound, added "options snd-hda-
intel model=imac24" to my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, and rebooted.
I launched rb, and then hit play. It played for about 10 seconds, and
then this crash occurred as I was trying to adjust the volume.

After restarting rb, I did not re-experience this crash.

[Bug 467868] [NEW] No sounds played with headphone nor speaker during testing

2009-10-31 Thread Eugene
Public bug reported:

I got ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop. Whenever a headphone plug in
to the jack, there's no sounds from both built in speaker and headphone.
I follow the steps below and it aggravate the matter that no sounds at
all even the headphone unplugged. I'm totally new to linux system. I'm
seeking your kind help.

ukyo...@yahoo.com

[HOW TO] Enable Sound in LG LW65/LW75
As detainer of this laptop model, you already should know, this LG laptop model
always had some issues to enable speakers over linux.

So, and after try many diferent ways, and searching in to many forums,
this included, i found a working solution to the problem.

I tried this on a ubuntu clean instalation, but it should work in every
linux instalations.

First of all you should download some alsa archives, the essential ones, are
alsa-driver and alsa-lib:
Code:

wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.21.tar.bz2
ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/lib/alsa-lib-1.0.21a.tar.bz2

Then, you need some packages from ubuntu repositories, i needed this ones
(libncurses5 libncurses5-dev xmlto) but you could need some more, use google
and some good sense to find them:
Code:

sudo apt-get install libncurses5 libncurses5-dev xmlto patch

Now, we need to unpack the tarballs dowloaded and install it:
Code:

tar -xf alsa-driver*.tar.bz2 && cd alsa-driver*/ && ./configure && make && sudo
make install && cd .. && rm -r alsa-driver*/
tar -xf alsa-lib*.tar.bz2 && cd alsa-lib*/ && ./configure && make && sudo make
install && cd .. && rm -r alsa-lib*/

You should get no errors.

Now we need to use alsaconf, alsaconf doesn't come anymore with ubuntu, so we
need to compile it.
To do that, you need to compile alsa-utils as before:
Code:

wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils/alsa-utils-1.0.21.tar.bz2
tar -xf alsa-utils*.tar.bz2 && cd alsa-utils*/ && ./configure && make && sudo
make install && cd .. && rm -r alsa-utils*/

Now just run alsaconf:
Code:

sudo alsaconf

This normally is a normal next, next, next instalation, but you could
always change some parameters, if you know what you're doing.

Now, you should add your model to alsa configuration file, in lg lw series, the
model is minimal, because they use c-media cards, instead realtek:
Code:

sudo echo -e "\noptions snd-hda-intel model=minimal" >> /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf

After configuring all, and running alsaconf, you should run alsamixer, and
place all volumes unmute, shourtcut is 'm', after change to desired channel.
Code:

alsamixer

After that, test speakers, if everything is ok, you should hear now your
speakers again like in windows old times (Ctrl+C to stop):
Code:

speaker-test -c2

If it doesn't work, reboot your system, and repeat the last 2 steps.

Some issues more, use this post to get your answers.

Tested in Hardy, Intrepid (with some issues compiling alsaconf), Jaunty and
Karmic.

[Bug 467862] [NEW] nautilus crashes when clicking files on second screen (:0.1)

2009-10-31 Thread zsquareplusc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Trying to e.g. drag a file on the second display (:0.1) leads to a
nautilus crash:

The program 'nautilus' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 534504 error_code 8 request_code 142 minor_code 2)

Doing the same actions on the primary display is no problem. On :0.1
however it happens on icons on the desktop as well as in a separate

[Bug 448084] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_widget_show()

2009-10-31 Thread Vladimir Boyd
Short on ideas, but here is an interesting fact.
When logging into my account for the first time, this error popped up. After
reporting it, I went back and added another Indicator Applet (just outside of
Notification Area 2.28.0, the one with the Volume and UbuntuOne applets) to my
top panel. After a restart there was no indicator in the Notification Area
still, but the Indicator Applet which I added was there and working.
Hope it helps to narrow the search somehow.

P.S. Later on the UbuntuOne applet disappeared from the Notification
Area 2.28.0! (Upon changing to the default desktop theme)

[Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus

2009-10-31 Thread nomnex
winning, winning, and praising... for details...

FN keys not working on most of the notebooks; hardware compatibility;
real software bugs, etc. there are serious issues out there with Ubuntu.
those should be the "paper cut" bugs: hardware compatibility and
usability.

such feedback on a thread from a bunch or crybabies winning about "will
my stuff be deleted if I push a key, or can I have zillion warnings
before anything happens..."

are you in a religious quest or something for pushing it so hard? Gnome
is simple, light. use KDE if you look for bloat, or go back to Windows.
Or even better, ask for your mom before pushing your DELETE key. and if
she is already dead, out of confusion, hang yourself.

[Bug 231773] Re: Appearance dialog breaking and entering CompizConfig, instead of "custom" radio button

2009-10-31 Thread Thinboy00
Probably not, given that "paper cut" doesn't include things involving
you breathing near the system. For example, if you set the panels to
autohide and experience a minor bug, it's not a paper cut because it
wasn't a pristine system (saw this on some other bug). If setting panel
preferences is enough to make it not a paper cut, installing software
must also be enough.

[Bug 421212] Re: gdm ignores keyboard layout selection for variants

2009-10-31 Thread Marcos Toledo
I use "USA Programmer Dvorak" exclusively as keyboard layout.

Now, if I set it as the single layout on keyboard layout screen, after a
restart/login, I have one other layout: "USA International", and it is
set as default (meaning I have to change back to dvorak and remove the
international layout). On the next restart, its back again and set as
default.

Is this the same issue or should I open a new one? This is a regression
(worked properly in 9.04) and I dont really care which layout is used in
gdm (I actually prefer qwerty, like in 9.04. since my wife uses the
computer sometimes too)

Thanks,
Marcos Toledo

[Bug 465802] Re: nautilus is showing my encrypted lvm volume in the side pane

2009-10-31 Thread meist3r
I've got the same problem with Karmic. It shows a 500GB LVM volume in my
nautilus view and "Places" menu which doesn't respond to my passphrase.
The system works normally and was upgraded from a Jaunty install which I
set up with the Alternate CD and encrypted LVM volumes. Peculiarly it
doesn't even show up in the gvfs-mount list:

System function normal, cryptsetup message and passphrase prompt during
boot as usual and functional.

2009-10-31 Thread deew
I have this issue on a netbook running karmic. As a few others may have
pointed out, this should not depend on the password being typed in at
login. Some of use use auto-login for young children that have trouble
with passwords.

[Bug 467680] [NEW] Rhythmbox 0.12.5 wants to reformat iPod for Windows with Linux

2009-10-31 Thread ro1105
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Every time I connect my iPod I'm greeted with a prompt stating:

"Do you want to initialize your iPod?

Rhythmbox has detected a device that is probably an uninitialised or
corrupted iPod. It must be initialised before Rhythmbox can use it, but
this will destroy any song metadata already present. If you wish
Rhythmbox to initialise the iPod, please fill in the information below.
If the device is not an iPod, or you do not wish to initialise it,
please click cancel."

My 4G 40MB iPod is formatted for Windows and also has a Linux OS
partition. The choice presented is for iPod Shuffle. After cancelling,
iPod partition is visible and working, then Linux partition is also
connected, both without possibility to sync.

[Bug 458883] Re: [users-admin] deleting a user doesn't work

2009-10-31 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Great! Using the info submitted by Milan, I've found a create a patch
which solves the user deletion problem for me. Like Milan's one, please
apply the attached patch using:

sudo patch /usr/share/system-tools-backends-2.0/scripts/Users/Users.pm <
fix-deleting-user.patch

and report if that fixes the issue for you.

The rationale is: users-admin is using deluser command for deleting a
user, but (I don't know why) does not work. My patch simply uses userdel
command instead, which works as expected.

Sorry, the above command has a typo. The right one is:

sudo patch /usr/share/system-tools-backends-2.0/scripts/Users/Users.pm <
fix-deleting-users.patch

(I typed "fix-deleting-user" instead of "fix-deleting-users".)

Sorry, Milan, but unfortunately your patch doesn't solve the problem.

Aside from that, your patch seems to touch the change_user subroutine,
instead of del_user, which should have more sense...

[Bug 440465] Re: removing pulseaudio breaks sound control

2009-10-31 Thread Psy[H[]
I agree that fixing pulseaudio is a constructive course of action.
But: I disagree with "no bug - no problem" policy. In this case closed bug does
not mean that problem isn't there!
And second: I am fully agree with Dmitry: pulseaudio is just bells and whistles
that should be *optional*! Jaunty was ideal in this: it worked both with and
without pulseaudio, without dirty hacks.
The title of this bug defines the problem precisely!

[Bug 319281] Re: Missing output devices in sound preferences dialog

2009-10-31 Thread Yfrwlf
Digital surround output is also missing for me on a Realtek ALC889A
chipset. I only have "Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958)" and various
combinations of both output and input, while the analogue options
include 4, 4.1, 5, and 5.1 surround. So, I guess it's not be detected
correctly, or something? :P

tools/+bug/458883/comments/24 should fix the problem.

Oh, and BTW this is a duplicate of bug 463353. You can change your own
password without trouble because it does not use the same system to do
it.
