I have also encountered this - ever since my clean install of 9.10 -
both movie player, and VLC will consistently display this behaviour with
any video file played.

After a few minutes of normal video playing, the sound will mute, and
the video will FF or freeze.

[Bug 485690] [NEW] some samba directories shared in windows does not have write enabled

2009-11-20 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

I have a vista pc, which public directory is shared to everyone, with
write permissions.

when I browse the share in nautilus, some write options are greyed out, such as:
- paste
- new directory
- new file

other thing work, like
- cut
- drag drop
- move to trash
- delete

the strange thing is that not every directory has this problem.

[Bug 211360] Re: workspace switcher tooltip is too intrusive

2009-11-20 Thread AmenophisIII
well... it's still/again so in jaunty and karmic.
the tooltips are very nice for new users, but they are a pain, if you read them
once.
it annoys me the most, that the tooltips spread not only over the desktop
switcher itself but also over all my tray icons... i dont see if there are new
messages in irc and pidgin until i move the mouse out of the way, which is
totally unnecessary otherwise

[Bug 485708] [NEW] Clicking on a movie icon causes movie player to immediately end.

2009-11-20 Thread geoffree
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

This problem of Totem crashing occurs with .wmv files and with .ogv and
.mov files. I can have Totem launched already and on my desktop or click
on the movie icon without Totem launched. Either way Totem immediately
shuts down. There are no messages in /var/crash. In dmesg there is
mention of a 'Libvirtd' but not linked to Totem.

The information on my system was apparently gathered automatically and
sent with the report. If not, please notify me.

[Bug 485712] [NEW] Download and send information unclear to colorblind

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Eight percent of the male population suffer from some form of
colorblindness. Therefore it the choice of colors for download and
upload rates in gnome-system-monitor is not so good. I suffer from mild
colorblindness, and have problems separating colors with a blue base and
red or green tints from each other. It would be better to switch one of
the colors to something very different, for example dark red or brown,
and keeping the other one blue. As it is now I can't see any difference
between the download and upload, which is annoying since I use it often
to check if my crappy internet connection is working.

[Bug 485727] [NEW] gnome-screensaver incorrectly monitors activity in virtual machines

2009-11-20 Thread Andy Ruddock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I have virtual machines running both Ubuntu and Windows, whilst working in a
virtual screen the screensaver doesn't kick in (as expected).
However, upon moving the mouse out of the virtual screen if the period I've
been working has exceeded the timeout of the screensaver then it kicks in, as
I'm moving the mouse, and I then have to re-enter my password to continue
working.
I'm using the latest karmic with virt-manager to control launch virtual
machines.

gdk_pixbuf_loader_close() - this is not allowed. You must explicitly end the
data stream to the loader before dropping the last reference.
The program 'f-spot' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 485734] [NEW] Activating Log out keyboard shortcut doesn't list Log out as an option

2009-11-20 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

In keyboard shortcuts, Log out is assigned to Ctrl+Alt+Delete. When I press
this combination, I get the choices Shut Down, Restart, Suspend and
Hibernate - Log out is not listed, as it should be.

PS: This is probably assigned to the wrong package - I couldn't find the
package gnome-keybinding-properties anywhere. Tried searching for the package
name, keyboard, keybindings, shortcuts, and couldn't find anything that
was obviously relevant.

[Bug 485744] [NEW] Ubuntu graphical file browsers, namely Nautilus, drop nfs-shares partly or entirely

2009-11-20 Thread Peter Åberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nfs-shares from Ubuntu server 9.10 (2.6.31-14-server) over time randomly
disappear from file/folder lists viewed in graphical file browsers
(Nautilus, Thunar) by the client, Ubuntu 9.10 Studio (kernel
2.6.31-9-rt, Gnome 2.28.1). The shares are still available to
applications accessing them e.g. by means of playlists. Additionally,
the shares are correctly displayed in the console (ls etc.) and in
Midnight Commander. Usually Thunar displays the shares more completely
than Nautilus. The shares in question are entire partitions or hard
disks on the server. The total nfs-share on the server is approximately
5TB. Disks/partitions with a large file count are generally more
affected by this bug.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-11-20 Thread Luis Lobo
I had this problem, and after reading all this comments, i decided to
give it a try to the reconfiguration of fstab

I went from 4 MB to a steady 30MB (this is the REAL max throughput of a
USB device in USB 2.0)

It worked perfectly. Also, setting my SATA Ports to use 32 bit and it
made it a little better.

Setting noatime, nodiratime to the mount options in /etc/fstab solves
the problem for me atleast

[Bug 366471] Re: Calendar closed unexpectedly

2009-11-20 Thread yeti
I'm experiencing this very same error reported previously (I quote
original report):

kwatson512 wrote on 2009-05-10: #62

The issue is exactly as in my first post. Open evolution with the
account connected to a Microsoft exchange server; switch to calendar;
data begins to populate the calendar, but after 10 to 20 seconds, data
disappears and the evolution calendar quit unexpectedly warning
appears. This happens in Xubuntu 9.04 with evolution-exchange version
2.26.0-0ubuntu3.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bits).
Tried many ways of installation, and the bug was still there.
Then, moved Synaptic to proposed level; and persists.
Would you reopen this bug?

[Bug 485798] [NEW] Dictionaries are NOT easy to install

2009-11-20 Thread andrea-abelli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The process to install the dictionaries to be used in evolution is not
really user-friendly

The only part of the user guide concerning spell checking says:
-

8.5.3. Spell Checking

To choose a spell-checking language, select it here. You must install
gnome-spell, aspell, and an aspell language package
(like for example aspell-en for english language) for spell-checking to be
available in Evolution. Additional dictionaries are available through your
package manager and are detected automatically if you have installed them. To
have the composer automatically check your spelling while you type, select
Check Spelling While I Type. You can set the color for misspelled words.

-

There's no mention about:
1. the name of the packages
2. how to install them

Why not having a pop up window that let's you chose the languages you'd
like to have the dictionaries installed for.

[Bug 485831] [NEW] evolution allows to send mail with empty To field in IMAP mode

2009-11-20 Thread CaptainCavern
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution on Karmic (fresh install). IMAP mail account.

simple to reproduce - new mail - send this email without To address
... (with subject or not) and tada ! Evolution don't check the To
field. Empty or with a malform email address, no problem for
evolution... it sends it and place it in the sent folder. Stop.

Evolution is a very weird piece of software: it seems to focus on very
particular features, but forget about the basics.

[Bug 485847] [NEW] nautilus won't display dir contents of mounted windows share

2009-11-20 Thread Jacques Fuentes
Public bug reported:

500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

Nautilus will not display the directory contents of a mounted windows 2003
share. I have a top level directory from an E drive on the 2003 machine mounted
to ~/mnt/dir. When I do an ls ~/mnt/c_web, ls displays the directory
contents, but also displays an error msg:

ls c_web
ls: cannot access c_web/pagefile.sys: Text file busy

It seems like nautlius cannot display the directory listing because of
the pagefile.sys being busy. When I access the share directly into a
specified directory using: ~/mnt/c_web/php - it will list all of the
contents of that directory.

Here's the mount point in /etc/fstab:

[Bug 485856] [NEW] since update to karmic, evince does not print anymore

2009-11-20 Thread Uwe Schilling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Since I updated to karmic, evince won't print anymore on my network
printer (no printer available to test it locally). Whenever I try to
print something in evince, everything seems fine, the jop is sent to the
printer and a little printer icon appears in the notification area.
However, the printer is not doing anything and after a while, the little
printer icon disappears even though no printing has taken place.
Unfortunately, there is no error message. Also, printing with other
applications like okular or openoffice works just fine. Thus, I suspect
the bug in evince.

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-11-20 Thread Patrick Roberts
Two weeks ago a friend of mine was using the GIMP to choose a nice
color. When he found a color he liked, he copied the hexcode of the
color, closed the GIMP and wanted to paste the color in KompoZer. As you
can guess this was impossible. It happened a few times to him and he
really didn't know what was going on.

A few days ago my father wanted to logon to a website, but he forgot his
password. He clicked on the link called Send me my password, he opened
Evolution, copied the password, closed Evolution and wanted to paste the
password in Firefox. You all know this is impossible. A few months ago I
already told my dad this was impossible, but he forgot, so this time he
again tried to use the copy/paste function the Windows way. Again he was
confused and didn't know what was happening.

mac_v wrote on 2009-09-02:
As already stated several times , If you have such a huge passion for this and
are capable of fixing it ,
- fix it or
- wait patiently for a volunteer to fix it or
- else *Pls do not use linux* .

Is it strange we have such a huge passion for this? The Linux way of using
copy/paste just is a big, epic fail.
- Not everyone is a programmer;
- We've waiting for a fix since the first release of a graphical interface for
Linux, but the progress is still ZERO!!! In all of those years there has been
absolutely NO PROGRESS AT ALL and I doubt it ever be fixed.
- True, that's the best solution and that's why I'm going to sell all of my
PC's and my laptop. I'm going to buy a few iMacs and MacBooks, because Linux
just doesn't work. The market share of Linux is still an epic fail and do you
know why? Because of these kind of stupid bugs which keep on bothering people,
while there's absolutely no progress in fixing these bugs. The market share of
Linux is incredebly low and that's exactly as it needs to be. An operating
system which has such bugs since it's first release doesn't even deserve a good
market share. Good to see your advice to not use Linux. I've already stopped to
advice people to use Linux months ago. I give the advice to use Mac OS, as this
works as expected.
