Nice, setting the /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/a11y- keyboard/active to false fixed my problems with wine software and I could finally run xset r off. Fully updated karmic x86_64 system with backports and proposed (plus some misc other repositories including nvidia ppa for one) enabled.
