Yes, but which case is the 80% use case -- user wants the password to be remembered for the duration of the session and will not be asked for different credentials for the same SMB share, or a user will be asked different credentials? If the latter is a corner case, which affecting SMB shares only suggests it is, we should still consider changing the /default/ behavior so that most users benefit from a better default, while the possibly relatively smaller population of SMB users exhibiting the use case Seb describes should be the ones to use a non-default setting. ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: Invalid = Incomplete -- Default setting for remembering password should be remember until logout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392589 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 523121] [NEW] Menu entries should show the application name *before* the description
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-menus I'm reporting this bug here, but it is a general issue with each program's .desktop file. When navigating menus, I expect to find my applications by their name, but often (almost ever) they are ordered by their generic description. I don't know if this is an issue that affects all Ubuntu translations, though, but so is for the Italian localization. To be clear, an example: if I wanted to launch Empathy, I would do Applicazioni - Internet - Empathy [- Messaggistica istantanea] but I find instead Applicazioni - Internet - Messaggistica istantanea Empathy That's could be fine the first time I use Ubuntu (maybe I don't know what Empathy is...), but next times it is really annoying: I just look for Empathy, because Empathy is what I want (on white pages you look for Smith, John, not for Plumber/Fireman/Whatever-work John Smith). There are good examples too, like Rhythmbox and Gwget, but they are the minority. Marking this as a papercut. In https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MessagingMenu#Recommended%20behavior%20for%20instant%20messaging%20clients I've specified: Optionally, [an IM client] may also provide a message source item for each person in your contact list who has not sent you new messages, but who has connected in the past minute and is still online. It should not do this unless it is also configured to display a notification bubble notifying you that the person has connected ... For someone who has connected in the past minute but not sent you new messages, time should be set to “connected”. So in the case of Empathy, I think the required changes are (1) add those items only when Enable notifications when a contact comes online is checked, and (2) set time = connected for them. -- Messaging menu shows entries for users without messages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440068 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
Re: [Bug 392589] Re: Default setting for remembering password should be remember until logout
If more than 80% of users would benefit from the remember until session ends options, and the remainder of users would still be able to accomplish tasks involving different credentials for the same share, and it doesn't pose a significant security risk, then I would favor changing the default. [Bug 523203] [NEW] GTalk chat status not synce'd with Empathy
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: empathy This could be a limitation of the API Empathy is using to connect to GTalk but it would strike me that if I have a single tool to coordinate my chats across different accounts (GTalk, MSN) then a single change in that tool should ripple out across the any other clients. For example: I sign into GMail in Firefox and leave the window open so I can easily see new emails. This means that the GTalk chat client embedded in the browser on the left of my inbox is a running instance of GTalk. I also sign into my accounts (MSN, GTalk) using Empathy which means a second instance of GTalk is running via Empathy. Now if I change my status in the browser's instance I can understand why I might not want to change my status in Empathy (because my MSN status would also change? And Empathy currently doesn't support different statuses for each account?). However if I change my status in Empathy I want that change to be reflected globally. That is to say I expect my status to change in the browser instance. And if I install and load Pidgin then I expect the status of GTalk to be changed there too. Bug or as designed? Steps to reproduce: 1) Log into GMail with the GTalk box on the left enabled with a status (any status will do) 2) Log into Empathy 3) Change your status in Empathy Expected result: Statuses across accounts and across clients are synch'd Actual result: GTalk in the browser window has my original status and is not updated when I change my Empathy status ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 CheckboxSubmission: 747fb8e876b564a76d76df120327e040 CheckboxSystem: 6ce041aeed0a2c17b3343b66d157175d Date: Wed Feb 17 13:40:40 2010 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/empathy InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Alpha amd64 (20091209) Package: empathy 2.29.6-0ubuntu2 ProcEnviron: SHELL=/bin/bash LANG=C ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-10.14-generic SourcePackage: empathy Uname: Linux 2.6.32-10-generic x86_64 ** Affects: empathy (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug lucid -- GTalk chat status not synce'd with Empathy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523203 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 71030] Re: Lock Screen blanks screen instead of showing screensaver (on external monitor)
Hi, I have noticed following behavior regarding gnome-screensaver and gnome-power-manager on my laptop. If I switch from internal display to external one and then close the lid of the laptop then screensaver only shows blank screen instead of selected theme. If I open the lid while screensaver is still on then the selected screensaver theme is activated and stays on after I close the lid. If I stop the screensaver by moving mouse and let it start again while lid is closed only blank screen is activated. Also Gnome-Power-manager doesn't switch off external display after the idle time set in the parameters, the external display stays always on if I close the lid of the laptop or/and I switch off internal display. There must be some logic in gnome-screensaver and gnome-power-manager that looks if laptop internal screen is off or if the lid is closed and then it does not activate screensaver or DPMS features because they are not needed. Problem is that if one uses external display with internal laptop display swithced off or lid closed screensaver should be activated and DPMS should still work for external display. I think gnome-screenasver and gnome-power-manager code should be changed to become aware of the display that is being used and if the external display is used they should ignore on/off status of internal display or lid position. I have noticed that if I switch the internal display to external display while my laptop lid is closed and after external display is activated then I kill gnome-screensaver and start it again then screensaver is working properly on external display despite the fact that laptop lid is closed. I have tried same procedure with gnome-power-manager but it doesn't help with it. [Bug 521759] Re: desktop appears blank
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 521794] Re: Tilted text in PDF document causes CUSP error
Unable to reproduce on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx alpha 2, with evince 2.29.5-0ubuntu1. I followed your steps but the PDF file with tilted text was displayed in Print Preview and printed out fine. [Bug 486960] Re: Brasero disk burner won't get past Preparing to write.
I think that Marty (#14) is right in my case. And it seems to be related to the bug which prevents ejection after burning, in that when that happens I often have to resort to the paperclip to eject, which then leaves the image mounted, even though an empty burner is added to the list. -- Brasero disk burner won't get past Preparing to write. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486960 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to brasero in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 523250] [NEW] CD in drive causes Nautilus to crash
