Re: [Bug 80921] Re: No subpixel rendering
Hello Anders, you just caught me being sloppy. I needed a method to override the packaged versions and by trial and error it appeared that I have to increment ubuntuX. I had been using this method for a while when I figured I can save work for myself if skip incremental updates during development period if I use ubuntuX+n. Perhaps I should use a bit more care considering that these packages are also consumed publicly. On another note, you posted a patch in 2007 to the upstream bug report. Can’t we do anything to close this upstream? I know upstream wants a patch and sees no difference between LCD filter and no filtering anyhow. But really. And then there’s the issue that Carl Worth removed the LCD filtering API from Cairo because some test suite images came out differently. In PDF rendering we cannot follow the desktop settings because only slight hinting and the across-pixel filter work properly on PDFs. I needed a method to override the packaged versions and by trial and error it appeared that I have to increment ubuntuX. No; the correct versioning scheme for a PPA is described here: https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/BuildingASourcePackage#Versioning On another note, you posted a patch in 2007 to the upstream bug report. Can’t we do anything to close this upstream? I hope so (though the particular patch I posted in 2007 isn’t useful anymore). I know upstream wants a patch and sees no difference between LCD filter and no filtering anyhow. But really. It’s totally reasonable for them to want a patch, and there’s no reason to believe that they “see no difference”. And then there’s the issue that Carl Worth removed the LCD filtering API from Cairo because some test suite images came out differently. That was a long time ago in the 1.7 branch. Freetype LCD filtering has never been in a stable release of Cairo; Ubuntu has been patching it in. In PDF rendering we cannot follow the desktop settings because only slight hinting and the across-pixel filter work properly on PDFs. Those are the default desktop settings these days on Ubuntu, right? Re: [Bug 476662] Re: Notifications use append instead of replace
Hi, I'm glad you already reviewed the patch! 1) We do need the same logic applied to empathy-status-icon.c, without it we don't get notifications when the chat window isn't open. Can you apply the same logic there? I'll try to do this 2) It works well for IMs from one person, but if you have incoming IMs within the timeout period one of the notifications seems to get discarded. So it appends the notifications for the existing notification nicely, but new notifications from other people seem to not appear at all, even after the existing one expires. This is strange, the only thing I can say is that maybe the mutex gives problems. Let's first add the same logic to empathy-status-icon.c and see what happens. -- Notifications use append instead of replace https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/476662 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 505029] Re: Keyboard repeat rate is often reset
I experience this daily -- which means exactly once per day: Every morning when I arrive, the keyboard repeat rate has been reset. I set it again by opening System Preferences Keyboard, sliding the Repeat Keys/Speed slider a little and back again and closing. I have tried using the kdbrate program, which says it does something (Typematic Rate set to 10,9 cps (delay = 250 ms)) but it makes no difference to the keyboard. Hardware: Dell Precision T3400 with a Dell wired keyboard, connected via USB through the monitor. Based on the previous comments to this bug report, I made a few tests, and conclude that the problem is triggered whenever I turn off the monitor. This is completely consistent with the fact that I see the problem every morning and not otherwise. The computer is running during the night because I need to access it remotedly. [Bug 545695] Re: Workspace switcher no longer works after adding 17th workspace
I figured out the source of this problem: I installed the metacity source (apt-get source metacity), built it with debugging and replaced the running metacity: ./src/metacity --replace After increasing the number of workspaces to 17 and attempting to change workspaces, metacity asserted an error at: ./metacity-2.28.1/src/core/prefs.c:2486:meta_prefs_get_workspace_name: assertion failed: (workspace_names[i] != NULL) It looks like ./metacity-2.28.1/src/metacity.schemas only creates 16 workspace name keys in the gconf database. When more than 16 workspaces are created using the Workspace Switcher Preferences applet, the new keys are not created. However, once 16 workspaces are selected and then the workspace name is changed on any of the workspaces, all of the keys are created in the gconf database. gconf-editor still complains that This key has ho schema for all workspaces 16, but this doesn't seem to be a problem. -- Workspace switcher no longer works after adding 17th workspace https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545695 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 80921] Re: No subpixel rendering
No; the correct versioning scheme for a PPA is described here: https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/BuildingASourcePackage#Versioning Duly noted. I know upstream wants a patch and sees no difference between LCD filter and no filtering anyhow. But really. It’s totally reasonable for them to want a patch, and there’s no reason to believe that they “see no difference”. Well, yes. And I received a stupefying reaction when I expressed disbelief about this claim back then: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/poppler/2009-August/005008.html And then there’s the issue that Carl Worth removed the LCD filtering API from Cairo because some test suite images came out differently. That was a long time ago in the 1.7 branch. Freetype LCD filtering has never been in a stable release of Cairo; Ubuntu has been patching it in. The removal of filtering API is something in addition to that (i.e., just using the filters that FreeType provides) and Ubuntu doesn’t patch that back in now. What I think is needed to set the filter method on the canvas is cairo_font_options_set_lcd_filter() and that was removed in this commit: commit 5d887ad5dca5af0f8216830d1b04d08a5aba9bee Author: Carl Worth cwo...@cworth.org Date: Thu Sep 25 13:31:20 2008 -0700 Remove all lcd_filter code. We reverted the public API for setting lcd_filter font options back in 1b42bc8033bc , but we had left the implementation which would examine fontconfig and Xft properties for the option, and which would call into freetype for subpixel glyph rasterization. However, I recently realized, (and the test suite had been trying to tell me for a while), that this approach would cause a regression for users who were previously using sub-pixel text, but without sub-pixel rendering built directly into freetype. That's not acceptable, so all the code is coming out for now. and: API changes since 1.7.4 --- There have been a few changes of API that was new during the 1.7 series: * Remove cairo_font_options_set_lcd_filter and cairo_font_options_get_lcd_filter Motivation: At the Cairo Summit, this API was determined to be too specific to the freetype font backend to be in the general API. A similar API with a cairo_ft prefix might be introduced in the future. Note that cairo will still respect the corresponding fontconfig settings for these options. In PDF rendering we cannot follow the desktop settings because only slight hinting and the across-pixel filter work properly on PDFs. Those are the default desktop settings these days on Ubuntu, right? But anyway, why should PDFs need to be any different than the rest of the desktop? Yes, but there are still many users who revert back to the old look and the old filter (e.g.: http://goo.gl/tnvl ) In a PDF strong hinting and that intra-pixel filtering model don’t really work. In PDF you have a scalable canvas and fractional advance widths. In normal on-screen text you have integer advances, so pixel snapping/quantization makes some sense. But there is a reason that Poppler disables hinting completely. The reason is that you would get very bad kerning if you would enable full hinting in a PDF. The thing is, there are ways to improve upon unhinted fonts. Slight hinting quantizes in y-direction only, which doesn’t affect kerning at all. And LCD filtering can improve contrast without affecting the advance widths of the glyphs. This is why in PDF we should force some settings and not use the global desktop settings. -- No subpixel rendering https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80921 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. The removal of filtering API is something in addition to that (i.e., just using the filters that FreeType provides) and Ubuntu doesn’t patch that back in now. The filtering API was introduced in 1.7.2 and removed in 1.7.4/1.7.6; it has never been on the stable 1.6 or 1.8 branches. Ubuntu has never had a package with this API, except briefly during the Intrepid development cycle. The way forward here is to work with Cairo upstream to resolve the problems with users whose FreeType lacks subpixel rendering, and try get the patches reintroduced for the 1.9 branch. Yes, but there are still many users who revert back to the old look and the old filter (e.g.: http://goo.gl/tnvl ) People’s monitors, vision, and preferences differ; they always will. [Bug 508632] Re: Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone
When I first read that the button is gone, I thought what the hack, why do they remove it!. But after thinking about it: When I switch to that mode the very most likely thing is that I then need to touch the keyboard anyway - why else switch to the path edit mode? So when I am already know that I am going to touch the keyboard I also could already hit the hotkey to enter that mode. Originally it was mentioned that only the left ctrl-L works. Is this maybe because Lucid running in a Virtualbox to test it out? - Virtualbox is grabbing the right ctrl key as control key itself so this might be the reason (if virtualbox used by the OP - Ying Hu). However, there is at least one use case where I would not use the keybord - and that happens quite often in reality: Mark a folder in an email, web site or other terminal window - right mouse button - copy - switch to Nautilus - now missing button - right mouse button - paste. But: Even if I could do this with the mouse only until that point, the last thing is I need to go to the keyboard either and hit return because there is no GO button (as in the browser). So when the button comes back there should also come a go button (only in the text edit mode that GO button is needed). So anyway - although I didn't know about the ctrl-l and I would use that also in some cases I also want the button back - definitely. In general: I think it is dangerous trying to serve the DAU too much by reducing everything to the minimum - you may be end up serving only those DAUs and then the system is pretty useless. And: I don't think, people are really that stupid - there are a few things many people do easy mix up or just in the hurry forget (search and location bar in the browser for instance - even I face myself sometimes having put the focus on the wrong one by accident). While some things could be improved by leaving them away (and put the functionality somewhere else!) others are there for good reason. -- Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/508632 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

On Mi, 2010-03-24 at 09:12 +, Anders Kaseorg wrote: The way forward here is to work with Cairo upstream to resolve the problems with users whose FreeType lacks subpixel rendering, and try get the patches reintroduced for the 1.9 branch. Yes, I hope they will pick this up soon. The test suite point is something I didn’t really agree with. If a distribution wants to avoid the risk of patent infringement and disables LCD filtering then it doesn’t matter if the code doing the filtering is at a lower or higher level. The FreeType solution to higher level libraries requesting LCD filtering then was to just render R=G=B, which I agree is a lame way to handle it. Yes, but there are still many users who revert back to the old look and the old filter (e.g.: http://goo.gl/tnvl ) People’s monitors, vision, and preferences differ; they always will. We should respect that instead of forcing our preferences upon them. Right, everything should remain configurable. But we need a method to configure LCD filter on an app-by-app basis. Just asking FontConfig is not enough, is my point. Behdad E. agrees: http://lists.cairographics.org/archives/cairo/2010-January/018920.html The reason is that you would get very bad kerning if you would enable full hinting in a PDF. Hasn’t that been a solved problem for many years? http://fishsoup.net/articles/grid-fitting/ Theoretically yes. But not in practice. Not at all. It would look like Fig.6. The worst part is that in a PDF you don’t get continuous runs of text (viz. paragraphs) that the renderer is at liberty to layout itself. You get chunks of glyphs that have precisely defined coordinates, and unless to stick to »natural« metrics you will get bad looking text. -- No subpixel rendering https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80921 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 508632] Re: Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone
The problem with Ctrl+L is that this is not ergonomic, because you cannot find out (apart by going to a forum or bug report like this one) by yourself. When you want to do this, you are just going to fiddle around with the mouse to find a way to copy the path or paste it. If it is not obvious the reaction will most probably be (but I have made no investigation on that) unhappy users who will write by hand the path in their e-mail or just use the up buttons and folders to go to the right path. Before, with the button, it was not obvious either, but just by looking around you could find it easily. The same happen to me on Win7, I had to use it once at work, and I needed to copy the path to send it to someone, just a small fiddling and I found out (I already forgot, but that does not matter as it as easy to find) how to switch to text base pathname. So now that I know that Ctrl+L could do the trick, I'm fine, because I know. The problem is the ergonomics behind that. There is clearly no way to find out this shortcut! And there is no other way to do it. Therefore, this is not minimalist, this is subminimalist (implying unergonomics). PS: I'm not against the idea that only Ctrl+L is neccessary to switch. But I am for the idea that there should be a way to find that out without requiring Google or a forum help. -- Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/508632 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 275762] Re: should detect that monitor was disconnected when waking from suspend
The same on lucid beta1 Very annoying. After disconnecting external monitor and resuming from suspend there's no image on LCD screen. But it appears after I type in password blindly. [Bug 545899] [NEW] Can not add desktop URL locations to the main gnome menu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel I ran into a problem today on all distributions from Hardy up to the latest version of Ubuntu including 10.04 beta. You can test this by creating the following file in /usr/share/applications/test.desktop Insert the information below to the file.. [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=Link Name=Load Google URL=www.google.com Categories=GNOME;GTK;Utility; It should then appear in the menu under Applications - Accessories however it doesn't. desktop files with Type=Application however do appear in the menu as expected. You can test this by changing our test.desktop file like so.. [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=Application Name=Load Google Exec=/etc/alternatives/x-www-browser www.google.com Categories=GNOME;GTK;Utility; The latter example is the only work around I can find. Can anyone fill me in on why these do not appear? ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Can not add desktop URL locations to the main gnome menu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545899 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
