[Bug 549968] Re: weather-applet uses wrong icons
I looked at the icon set, and the 16x16 icons for Humanity-Dark look similar to the mono icons, but the 48x48 icons look like the old (bright sunny) ones. So AVM must be using the larger icons. However, if I choose the Dust theme (also using Humanity-Dark), the weather applet shows the bright sunny icons. So presumably it is using the 48x48 icons and scaling them, whereas Ambiance is using the 16x16 icons. Hence I'd say it's a problem with the theme rather than the applet. Why have the weather icons changed, anyway? The bright sunny ones are much more fun than the mono ones. -- weather-applet uses wrong icons https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/549968 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-applets in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 549968] Re: weather-applet uses wrong icons
It looks like there is an inconsistency in the weather icons in the humanity-icon themes - the 16x16 don't match the 48x48 icons. My vote is for the (old-style) 48x48 icons - the new 16x16 ones are similar to the boring ubuntu-mono weather icons. ** Package changed: gnome-applets (Ubuntu) = humanity-icon-theme (Ubuntu) -- weather-applet uses wrong icons https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/549968 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-applets in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 553746] Re: Cannot Change User and Group ID
Yeah, you were also able to set the phone number, and tweak membership to every kind of obscure privilege, plus changing home directory. But how many people need that? If you really need a specific UID, just create the user and change UID after, that doesn't hurt, and makes most people not scared by strange settings. Plus, not choosing an UID allows us to let adduser preferences come into play, which is very important for system-wide consistency. Note if you really need a specific profile for some users, have a look at /etc /gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf, where you can add MinUID and MaxUID options. -- Cannot Change User and Group ID https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to system-tools-backends in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 353002] Re: Add option to hide persistent notification icon and add support for the indicator-applet
For Evolution there are actually two positions in the Indication Applet: * Evolution Mail * Inbox [number_of_unread_e-mails] The first one runs the Evolution / opens Evolution window. The second one does the same as the former but appears only when Evolution is running (when Evolution's off there's a description string Read and write emails instead). That's a waste of interface space, however, in case of Ekiga, there can be: - when Ekiga is off: * Ekiga * Talk to people over the internet - when Ekiga is running: * Ekiga - when there's a call incoming (indicator applet changes colour and the sound is played): * Ekiga (answer a call) * Ekiga (decline a call) If you don't consider the above solution (which works similar for pidgin/telepathy) functional enough incoming call event can be treated as a special dialogue box - whenever there's an incoming call and Ekiga isn't in Do Not Disturb state, pop-up an Answer/Decline dialogue box in the middle of the screen or under the system tray. That's the most intuitive solution I can think of - don't know how much it bends the rules of Gnome HIG. Doesn't seem to bend anything to me. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
As near as I can tell, I'm probably one of the few (or maybe only one) on the thread who has commercially/professionally dealt with the consequences of a development group's rash UI decisions in a product they support, and the types of users that come after you with pitchforks and torches afterwards. Let me tell you, it isn't fun. None of those types of users (the pitchfork/torch wielding ones) are on this thread, not will they likely see this thread. They won't be going to Google to see why it's broke, but they are going to give their IT guy an angry trouncing and be done with it. It leaves the IT guy in a bad position, and Ubuntu in a worse one ultimately. A minor change that hardly affected me at all, it's had a 100% negative (sometimes violent) reaction from 20 users I've polled. Although they softened up when I said, what if there was something useful replacing it?. But if nothing replaces it where is the user's carrot/incentive? At that point there is only anger... Very frustrating for me since it makes me look bad after having pushed Ubuntu so hard for the last couple of years. I've been pushing hard on Windows users (who don't want Office 2007 and shifted to OoO) to go ahead and switch, since most of their normal apps already are dual platform. For UI related changes, it generally takes 6 months to a year of study, focus groups, marketing researchers doing blind studies on users, etc etc. Not cheap. So far I've only seen maybe 3 weeks here of debate, and still no tangible reason to switch. We're still missing the carrot. Unfortunately there are none of us on the thread who are qualified to give research data back. Why? Basically we're all over-qualified for this. All of us will skew the results one way or another, not intentionally but since we know what it's about and for, we will change the results. Better to get blind test subjects who have no clue what's going on, or why they're getting tested, or what the testing is even about. It's going to take a marketing research firm, and multiple test groups across the globe to get some data back. Not cheap, but it needs done. Course, still need to figure out what data is being collected, and why. Which means the unknown unobtanium feature on the right portion of the screen needs completed to a beta level... -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
IOGraphica Plot from 9.10 with Gnome3. :) Different evening, standard normal usage, interruptions, surfing, email, document review, etc... Since Pako (I think it was Pako) brought up a good point for what about Gnome 3?, I thought what about Gnome 3?. :) So I tried it as well to get a better data point for Mark on the upcoming major change in Gnome that essentially *obsoletes* this discussion and bug... With Gnome 3 my usage changed quite a bit. The minimize, max and close buttons weren't used very often. The only button of those 3 even relevant after Gnome 3 releases will be the CLOSE button, and I'm not sure about that close button either depending on what else occurs before Gnome 3's actual release...This data seems to go along with my assertion that whatever is being planned, needs to occur on Gnome3 where there is a MAJOR paradigm shift for the desktop UI, rather than tacking something onto an existing/tired UI everyone is already comfortable with. For those that haven't tried Gnome3 yet, I highly recommend it just for the experience and heads up if nothing else. It's very intuitive for the changes, and while it's not perfect yet, it's in better shape than KDE4 was on the first couple of releases. The close button moving to the left wouldn't have irked me at all either on Gnome 3, since the upper left of the screen is where I was spending a lot of time anyway switching windows. In fact the close button on the upper right in Gnome 3 irked me. But that's Gnome 3, and this change is going into the old/obsolete Gnome2 where upper right is still correct. I found quick instructions here: http://digitizor.com/2009/11/10/get-a-first-hand-feel-of-gnome-3-shell-in-ubuntu-karmic-koala/ So Mark, whatever feature you are planning, I think you would be well advised to tie it instead to Gnome 3 where this button fiasco doesn't really exist, and keep the pitchfork wielding bloggers off of you. Is it too late to make Gnome3 the default for Lucid? ;) ** Attachment added: 9.10 - Gnome3: 1.9 Hours of reasonably normal usage http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42977399/IOGraphica%20-%201.4%20hours%20%28from%2021-00%20to%2022-29%29_Gnome3.png -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 546021] Re: Using Shift+left arrow or right arrow to select characters results in garbage on command line
Hi, thanks for taking the time to report this bug and for helping to make Ubuntu a better OS. The terminal keybindings depend on the readline configuration, which stays in the file /etc/inputrc. I also have Lucid running on my laptop and i can reproduce this behaviour although i'm not sure if you could select text in the terminal with shift+arrows in karmic. As far as i remember there was no such possibility, but i may be mistaken. Can someone running Karmic post the /etc/inputrc file? Marking as incomplete until new information.
That's exactly what I was trying to say. I'm the one who advocated the decision to switch our whole computer network (including school's administration, classrooms etc.) to Ubuntu. I know people will give me a hard time after we adopt Ubuntu 10.04. The worst thing is I can't say to them after careful consideration and month of usability studies Ubuntu team decided to change the design, and here are the reasons why this was necessary. All I can say is I don't really know. They made the decision 4 weeks before release, claiming there is a plan, but without giving us any details. The decision seemed rushed and not really backed by data, so I can't be even sure the change is here to stay. I'm sorry, but we will have to wait to the next release and see. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@ Jeff: A minor change that hardly affected me at all, it's had a 100% negative (sometimes violent) reaction from 20 users I've polled. I don't understand!? You updated to Lucid Beta1 in your company? It's still not for productive work. In the final you will have the option for putting them to the right quickly [Ambiance and Radiance]. I think peoples still lost energy and anger for nothing. Here is a plan for this action ... and if you open your mind and you would listen what was said all you will see the light. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
