[Bug 549968] Re: weather-applet uses wrong icons

2010-04-03 Thread Rocko
I looked at the icon set, and the 16x16 icons for Humanity-Dark look
similar to the mono icons, but the 48x48 icons look like the old (bright
sunny) ones. So AVM must be using the larger icons.

However, if I choose the Dust theme (also using Humanity-Dark), the
weather applet shows the bright sunny icons. So presumably it is using
the 48x48 icons and scaling them, whereas Ambiance is using the 16x16
icons.

Hence I'd say it's a problem with the theme rather than the applet.

Why have the weather icons changed, anyway? The bright sunny ones are
much more fun than the mono ones.

[Bug 549968] Re: weather-applet uses wrong icons

2010-04-03 Thread Rocko
It looks like there is an inconsistency in the weather icons in the
humanity-icon themes - the 16x16 don't match the 48x48 icons. My vote is
for the (old-style) 48x48 icons - the new 16x16 ones are similar to the
boring ubuntu-mono weather icons.

[Bug 538849] Re: Uses 100% CPU

2010-04-03 Thread Klaus Doblmann
If the patch is applied then I take it for granted the bug is resolved -
for now. There are others affected by it who can confirm this - I can't
reinstall evolution and let it run for a few days as it would mess up my
mail-archive (I'm getting several hundred a day and I want these in one
database in one program - receiving them via pop would let them end up
in the evolution database from where I'd have to manually copy them over
to sylpheed...)

[Bug 554474] [NEW] nautilus-sendto does not recognize blueman anymore

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-sendto

Hi

1) Ubuntu 10.04 Beta with latest updates
2) nautilus-sendto 2.28.4-0ubuntu1
blueman 1.21-2ubuntu1
tried latest development snapshot too (1.22+r699+201002191022~lucid)

3) When using gnome-bluetooth you can send files to bluetooth-devices via
bluetooth (OBEX) Entry in nautilus-gksu.
In early Version you could send files the same way when using blueman.
For it to work there must be a symlink from /usr/bin/bluetooth-sendto to
/usr/bin/blueman-sendto

4) I doesn't know since when this doesn't work anymore but
sending files via bluetooth is not available in the sendto-menü anymore.

Now that's strange: today I'm unable to reproduce the left menu issue
myself! The top menu issue keeps happening consistently, but it could
be intentional. I'll let you know as soon as I run into the issue again.

[Bug 543755] Re: gnome-terminal remembers sudo password between windows

2010-04-03 Thread bwashed
I can't find anything in that FAQ that indicates that sudo privileges
carries over to another window when gnome-terminal is closed. On the
contrary, the FAQ claims that sudo offers the benefit of fine-grained
granting of privileges. Giving sudo access to whichever person that
opens a terminal window within 15 minutes is hardly the best way to
exercise fine-grained granting of privileges.

If you seriously mean that this is a feature, why is it implemented in
such a way that only the first N windows/tabs get the sudo-privleges and
why is it not documented?

Please reopen this bug.

Suggestion: Make gnome-terminal automatically perform a sudo -k on exit?

[Bug 201395] Re: f-spot should obey umask

2010-04-03 Thread Gunnar Tryggvason
Hi. I am using Karmic Koala-9.10 and are having problems with perms regardin
F-SPOT. I share my photos from an old PC- running 9.04-mythbuntu and files are
owned by me, but using group users with perm +rw (764). I use Samba sharing for
my pictures (myndir).:
[myndir]
comment = myndir
path = /media/gagnadiskur/Myndir
public = yes
writable = yes
create mask = 0776
directory mask = 0776

There are 4 users on the 9.1-pc and they are all members of the group users,
files have perm 774 and files 764. UMASK is set to 002. I use f-spot and use
symb. link for the other users to one common location. But when any one other
than the owner of the pictures edits them, then perms changes to 722??.
But editing in Nautilus is ok.

so far people using computers (win and linux) are USED to have the

[Bug 553746] Re: Cannot Change User and Group ID

2010-04-03 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yeah, you were also able to set the phone number, and tweak membership
to every kind of obscure privilege, plus changing home directory. But
how many people need that? If you really need a specific UID, just
create the user and change UID after, that doesn't hurt, and makes most
people not scared by strange settings.

Plus, not choosing an UID allows us to let adduser preferences come into
play, which is very important for system-wide consistency. Note if you
really need a specific profile for some users, have a look at /etc
/gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf, where you can add MinUID and
MaxUID options.

[Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates

2010-04-03 Thread Travis B. Hartwell
I've looked into it a bit, but could not reproduce under this
configuration:

VMware Player version 3.0.1 build-227600
Host is 64-bit Lucid system up to date as of today
Guest is 64-bit Lucid system up to date as of today

Tried both with and without VMware Tools installed.
VMware Tools version 8.1.4-227600 downloaded today.

No keyboard issues at all in the gdm login screen.

I note however that this is using a Ubuntu host, whereas from
reading the original report and previous comments, it seems the
problem is exhibited on OS X and Windows hosts.

I don't have access to either OS X or Windows, so someone else will
have to test.

[Bug 554518] [NEW] gnome-mahjongg postmodern gnome-foot and ubuntu-logo have no designation.

2010-04-03 Thread Mark Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mahjongg

Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1
gnome-mahjongg

Changing the tile set gives 3 options smooth, postmodern, postmodern.
Postmodern 1 gives the gnome-logo tile.
Postmodern 2 gives the ubuntu-logo tile.

Both are shown in the list of tile sets with the exact same name postmodern.
Maybe a slight name change to make them distinguishable would be nicer than
guessing which is which?
Just a cosmetic change to help LTS be the best it can be.

[Bug 221112] Re: Can't use space bar in search bar when using french alternative keyboard

2010-04-03 Thread alexduf
OK, in ubuntu 10.04 beta, the bug was here using default options.
Just check the option Utiliser la barre d'espacement pour insérer un éspace
insécable to la barre d'espacement renvoie une espace ordinaire à tous les
niveaux

Now rythmbox can be used, and i can search what i want on the music store.
But it's pretty tricky, maybe this kind of things could be in the 100 paper

[Bug 542772] Re: Add menu metacity the choice of the positioning buttons

2010-04-03 Thread Vish
This has now be fixed , users/themers can set the option individually in the
theme [in the index.theme file] as:
ButtonLayout=menu:maximize,minimize,close

This is a new option that has been added.

and also, when they select the new theme , they can choose to /not/ use
the button layout if they want. A prompt asks for confirmation before
switching layout.

[Bug 545921] Re: Unable to select directories with subdirectories in directory selection dialog

2010-04-03 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- I'm unable to reproduce this bug too.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as Invalid only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 554542] [NEW] Invalid characters with gnome-keyboard-properties

2010-04-03 Thread johny
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Using Lucid Beta

Step to reproduce :

1. Open gnome-keyboard-properties.
2. Add Polish language
3. Select Polish language
4. Type some typical Polish letters ą, ó, and so on...
5. Watch the results - Some invalid characters will appear in the preview
window.

If you close the setup window, and switch the layout manually, by
clicking the panel applet, the Polish characters will appear correctly.

[Bug 554540] [NEW] Evolution receiving same email multiple times

2010-04-03 Thread Szebenyi Bálint
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am using Karmic 9.10, with evoltuion: 2.28.1
evolution:
  Telepítve: 2.28.1-0ubuntu2
  Jelölt: 2.28.1-0ubuntu2
  Verziótáblázat:
 *** 2.28.1-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://hu.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.28.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://hu.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

Kernel: x86_64, 2.6.31-20-generic

The problem raised when my home folder got full one day, after I have made
enough space, the problem still exists.
After having made some space (1Gb) I launched evolution and found a whole new
bunch of folders in it, like:
School
School
School12fgh
Schooldgftz
Schoolopgfh
Schooldrtebyí
Schoolewrnea
School erta rt
Schoolrtertete

schema:
existing foldernames + random characters

I have managed to erase these empty fake folders in the .evolution directory.
The problem is that I receive the same messages from my mail and gmail server
as if they have not been downloaded already. Picture attached as illustration.
So the new ones since the disk-full-time are received every time evolution
checks for mails, which makes evolution useless.
I guess that some file or setting has been corrupted in which evolution stores
the info about emails as of the status downloaded/not downloaded. Is there a
way to erase this file/repair it or just by reinstalling the application can it
be corrected. (in case I am right about the problem)
Because I don't know where the problem lies and evolution does not inform me
about experiencing difficulties I cannot amend it.

After having searched around the forums and launchpad I could not find a way to
avoid this problem and therefore considered it to be somewhat a bug, should I
have been wrong, my apologies.

[Bug 554576] [NEW] FTP Symlink problem

Public bug reported:

What I am doing: Connecting to my media server (Ubuntu 9.10) from my

When connected to a remote FTP server a symlink to a directory does not
work...This link cannot be used, because its target /mnt/disk2/xyz

perfectly, and the icon show a folder with a curly arrow like it should.

[Bug 353002] Re: Add option to hide persistent notification icon and add support for the indicator-applet

2010-04-03 Thread trespasser
For Evolution there are actually two positions in the Indication Applet:
* Evolution Mail
* Inbox [number_of_unread_e-mails]

The first one runs the Evolution / opens Evolution window. The second
one does the same as the former but appears only when Evolution is
running (when Evolution's off there's a description string Read and
write emails instead). That's a waste of interface space, however, in
case of Ekiga, there can be:

- when Ekiga is off:
* Ekiga
* Talk to people over the internet

- when Ekiga is running:
* Ekiga

- when there's a call incoming (indicator applet changes colour and the sound
is played):
* Ekiga (answer a call)
* Ekiga (decline a call)

If you don't consider the above solution (which works similar for
pidgin/telepathy) functional enough incoming call event can be treated
as a special dialogue box - whenever there's an incoming call and Ekiga
isn't in Do Not Disturb state, pop-up an Answer/Decline dialogue box
in the middle of the screen or under the system tray. That's the most
intuitive solution I can think of - don't know how much it bends the
rules of Gnome HIG. Doesn't seem to bend anything to me.

Cheers!

I have had problems using daily build from March 29, 31, April 1 and 2.
Initial Ubuntu screen with 5 dots works fine then blank screen.
I have an ATI HD5750.
Previous daily builds from March 8, 15 and 22 worked.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-03 Thread Jeff Burns
As near as I can tell, I'm probably one of the few (or maybe only one)
on the thread who has commercially/professionally dealt with the
consequences of a development group's rash UI decisions in a product
they support, and the types of users that come after you with pitchforks
and torches afterwards. Let me tell you, it isn't fun. None of those
types of users (the pitchfork/torch wielding ones) are on this thread,
not will they likely see this thread. They won't be going to Google to
see why it's broke, but they are going to give their IT guy an angry
trouncing and be done with it. It leaves the IT guy in a bad position,
and Ubuntu in a worse one ultimately. A minor change that hardly
affected me at all, it's had a 100% negative (sometimes violent)
reaction from 20 users I've polled. Although they softened up when I
said, what if there was something useful replacing it?. But if
nothing replaces it where is the user's carrot/incentive? At that point
there is only anger... Very frustrating for me since it makes me look
bad after having pushed Ubuntu so hard for the last couple of years.
I've been pushing hard on Windows users (who don't want Office 2007 and
shifted to OoO) to go ahead and switch, since most of their normal apps
already are dual platform.

For UI related changes, it generally takes 6 months to a year of study,
focus groups, marketing researchers doing blind studies on users, etc
etc. Not cheap. So far I've only seen maybe 3 weeks here of debate,
and still no tangible reason to switch. We're still missing the carrot.
Unfortunately there are none of us on the thread who are qualified to
give research data back. Why? Basically we're all over-qualified for
this. All of us will skew the results one way or another, not
intentionally but since we know what it's about and for, we will change
the results. Better to get blind test subjects who have no clue
what's going on, or why they're getting tested, or what the testing is
even about. It's going to take a marketing research firm, and multiple
test groups across the globe to get some data back. Not cheap, but it
needs done. Course, still need to figure out what data is being
collected, and why. Which means the unknown unobtanium feature on
the right portion of the screen needs completed to a beta level...

[Bug 408764] Re: missing window decorations after reboot

2010-04-03 Thread ArgelBargel
I have this problem on one machine running 9.10 on a radeon card and
have had it after upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 beta 1 on my laptop with
an nvidia card. Even after a new, clean install I've had this problem
(not sure, if the install tried to import some settings from my media-
center partition which runs on 9.04). But I could get rid of it by
creating a new account, and replacing all my old settings with the new
ones (rm old ones, copy new ones from new account, chmod to old user).

Did not keep for long though - after some update (including new kernel
version on thursday or friday (01.04. or 02.04.10) my windows again are
missing their decorations and the Themes-settings-dialog hangs after
manually enabling desktop effects (which at least gives back the window
borders and controls)

working for that (could be a good workaround for lucid if you don't want

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-03 Thread Jeff Burns
IOGraphica Plot from 9.10 with Gnome3. :) Different evening, standard
normal usage, interruptions, surfing, email, document review, etc...

Since Pako (I think it was Pako) brought up a good point for what about
Gnome 3?, I thought what about Gnome 3?. :) So I tried it as well
to get a better data point for Mark on the upcoming major change in
Gnome that essentially *obsoletes* this discussion and bug...

With Gnome 3 my usage changed quite a bit. The minimize, max and close buttons
weren't used very often. The only button of those 3 even relevant after Gnome
3 releases will be the CLOSE button, and I'm not sure about that close button
either depending on what else occurs before Gnome 3's actual release...This
data seems to go along with my assertion that whatever is being planned, needs
to occur on Gnome3 where there is a MAJOR paradigm shift for the desktop UI,
rather than tacking something onto an existing/tired UI everyone is already
comfortable with. For those that haven't tried Gnome3 yet, I highly recommend
it just for the experience and heads up if nothing else. It's very intuitive
for the changes, and while it's not perfect yet, it's in better shape than KDE4
was on the first couple of releases. The close button moving to the left
wouldn't have irked me at all either on Gnome 3, since the upper left of the
screen is where I was spending a lot of time anyway switching windows. In fact
the close button on the upper right in Gnome 3 irked me. But that's Gnome 3,
and this change is going into the old/obsolete Gnome2 where upper right is
still correct.
I found quick instructions here:
http://digitizor.com/2009/11/10/get-a-first-hand-feel-of-gnome-3-shell-in-ubuntu-karmic-koala/

So Mark, whatever feature you are planning, I think you would be well
advised to tie it instead to Gnome 3 where this button fiasco doesn't
really exist, and keep the pitchfork wielding bloggers off of you. Is
it too late to make Gnome3 the default for Lucid? ;)

[Bug 546021] Re: Using Shift+left arrow or right arrow to select characters results in garbage on command line

2010-04-03 Thread Davide Lasagna
Hi, thanks for taking the time to report this bug and for helping to make
Ubuntu a better OS.
The terminal keybindings depend on the readline configuration, which stays in
the file /etc/inputrc. I also have Lucid running on my laptop and i can
reproduce this behaviour although i'm not sure if you could select text in the
terminal with shift+arrows in karmic. As far as i remember there was no such
possibility, but i may be mistaken. Can someone running Karmic post the
/etc/inputrc file? Marking as incomplete until new information.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. I'm the one who advocated the
decision to switch our whole computer network (including school's
administration, classrooms etc.) to Ubuntu. I know people will give me a
hard time after we adopt Ubuntu 10.04. The worst thing is I can't say to
them after careful consideration and month of usability studies Ubuntu
team decided to change the design, and here are the reasons why this was
necessary. All I can say is I don't really know. They made the
decision 4 weeks before release, claiming there is a plan, but without
giving us any details. The decision seemed rushed and not really backed
by data, so I can't be even sure the change is here to stay. I'm sorry,
but we will have to wait to the next release and see.
