[Bug 530191] Re: Incorrect timezone selected in gnome clock applet

2010-05-05 Thread Erlan Sergaziev
No I have not filed any upstream bugs.
My search lead to this page: https://launchpad.net/libgweather and I couldn't
find where to go further.

I am afraid, I don't think I can contribute a quality patch myself yet.

[Bug 575159] Re: Rhythmbox eats a HUGE amount of memory on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (even if no music is running)

2010-05-05 Thread Benjamin Herbert
I installed and ran Valgrind, and tried to follow your instructions. Rhythmbox
does not crash, so I just let it run for a while and then closed the program. I
also started a song and stopped it.
The log grew to 2.5 GB...

I then killed rhythmbox and restarted it, just letting it idle over
night. The process explorer showed somewhere about 4GB memory
consumption...

Note that on my old home PC, I was not able to reproduce this behaviour.
Maybe this older machine is 32-bit and the machine where the faulty
behavior can be noticed is 64-bit?

[Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout

2010-05-05 Thread Peter Belew
Karmic, up through any current updates, uses icons with numeric
subscripts indicating variants of the basic keyboards for a language.
Eliminating that feature (actually in a redesigned program) is a
definite regression.

By the way, I designed the original US-International layout for Windows
2.11 in 1987, for Olivetti and Microsoft. This was redesigned the next
year for Windows 3.0, with the advice of a Nokia engineer, to provide
Nordic language support. Visually indicating variant keyboard selections
has been an issue ever since. Recent XP versions use one icon or other
indicator to indicate the base language, and another to show variants,
when more than one variant is enabled.

Also XP provides a keyboard switching option something like control-
shift+number key to select various layouts, instead of toggling or
cycling through the enabled combinations. It's too easy otherwise to
enable the wrong keyboard, without the icon showing definitely which
layout is being used - this leads to confusion and typos.

There is a KDE keyboard indicator program, which I haven't tried - it
apparently has user-configurable icons. I don't know if that covers this
situation.

[Bug 575591] [NEW] Does not set LANGUAGE on login

2010-05-05 Thread Michael Vogt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When I login and set the language to german in the gdm menu I get
LC_*=de_DE.UTF-8 (as expected).
However the LANGUAGE variable is not set (or changed). So that I end up with
english gnome menus.
This is a system upgraded from karmic and I think it used to work in karmic.
The LANGUAGE is set from
language-selector in /etc/default/language and /etc/environment.

My GN Netcom USB headset now has an extremly low volume after upgrading
to Lucid Lynx.

I've tried all available settings both on the standard Sound settings

[Bug 553162] Re: Unset $LANGUAGES if the user picks a different locale in gdm

2010-05-05 Thread Martin Pitt
This was just discussed in #ubuntu-desktop. The basic problem here is
that language-selector now is able to set system-wide locale settings
which gdm does not understand. gdm is only able to set a locale (i. e.
$LANG), while language-selector can set a locale and additionally a
language list (which overrides LC_MESSAGES from $LANG) in $LANGUAGE.

I think a reasonable compromise would be:

 * As long as the locale picked in gdm matches the system locale, keep
$LANGUAGE, since it's explicit configuration that the admin did for this
machine, and we need to respect it. (cf. bug 407300)

 * Once the user selects a different locale, $LANGUAGES should be unset.
This can be one of:

- $LANGUAGES is set system-wide, and $GDM_LANG != the system wide locale
- $LANGUAGES is set in ~/.profile, and $GDM_LANG != $LANG set from
~/.profile or ~/.dmrc

This needs to be done in /etc/gdm/Xsession.

** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Triaged

** Summary changed:

- Unset $LANGUAGES if the user picks a different locale in gdm
+ Unset $LANGUAGES if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that

[Bug 575312] Re: ekiga crashed with SIGILL

2010-05-05 Thread Eugen Dedu
Well, the crash appears in gtk, see thread 7, but the bug could be
memory corruption in ekiga itself. Also, it seems ekiga is exiting when
the crash appears.

Could the reporter install debugging symbols for ekiga, ptlib and opal,
and execute ekiga through valgrind? Maybe this give us a clue about
where the memory corruption is.

[Bug 549723] Re: empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup

2010-05-05 Thread Ole Laursen
I don't know if this is the problem the OP is facing, for me I went to
the settings for startup applications in the GNOME control panel and
checked the Empathy entry. Then I reboot. When the desktop comes up
again, empathy is started up, but the status is offline. I have to
manually select the online status, then it connects. The Automatically
connect at startup is checked in the Empathy settings.

For me the problem appears to be that the command in the startup
settings is empathy --no-connect. I have no idea where this came from,
in fact I got Exec=empathy in /etc/xdg/autostart/empathy.desktop. I'm
going to change it to empathy --start-hidden and see if that helps. :)

[Bug 504440] Re: sd card safely remove drive kills reader device

2010-05-05 Thread Martin Pitt
We changed the default action (in the nautilus bar) to do an eject, not
a safe removal, for this very reason. You really do not want to remove
the internal drive. :-)

I'm afraid there is nothing we can do about this right now, since this
kind of hardware unhelpfully does not say that it is not really
hotpluggable.

[Bug 575630] [NEW] Evince doesnt correctly select the proper text in a dual collumn text

2010-05-05 Thread nick ves
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

The bug happens in the build-in package of evince ( Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1)
My system is :
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04

This bug is around for lot of time i think.

Sometimes the text in pdf comes in a dual column format.
When you trying to select a part of that text, you expect evince to select the
text where the cursor is.
Instead if you drag-clicking even a letter of your text, evince makes an
arbitrary selection, usually in the next column.

To replicate you need a dual column pdf text file. The bug will happen
eveytime you'll try to extract text from either column

[Bug 575655] [NEW] Gnome-Panel regularly has repeated icons

2010-05-05 Thread rupert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

More often than not, after booting, I find one or more gnome-panel icons are
replicated, with one icon functional, the other not functioning. This randomly
affects the following icons:
bluetooth, volume control, date/time, logout button.

I am attaching a screenshot showing it affecting the volume control
icon, you can see that there are three icons there, when there should
only be oneAlso, there should be a dropbox icon, it was there, but
when I clicked on the volume icon, the dropbox icon was replaced by
another volume icon (so the dropbox icon became the volume icon)! Weird!

[Bug 488048] Re: keyboard layout needs to be reset after each login

2010-05-05 Thread Martin Pitt
Ooh, I see what's wrong. I think you _expect_ to have us altgr-intl
and bg phonetic. However, in gdm (the login manager) you selected us
alt-intl instead of us altgr-intl (which can be seen in ~/.dmrc in
the Layout= line). An explicit selection in gdm adds the new layout
unless it was already configured.

So all you need to do is to fix the layout in the login manager once.

Even the same issue with lenovo y410 with 10.04, brightness keys are not

All other features work fine. including automatic brightness control.

There is a crazy issue with this laptop.

brightness value varies from 0 - 5 and 5 - 10 where 5 being the least
and 0 or 10 being the heighest. to calrify more, if I use the brightness
applet, the brightness is least when the slider is in the middle and
increases on either side. I found max_brightness option but there is no
min_brightness If at all I need to put 5 there :-)

[Bug 574067] Re: Network Admin Tool Missing Connection Tab

2010-05-05 Thread Tomáš Cícha
I can't help myself, but I have to comment here.

If this is a design decision, it is really a very poor one. Ubuntu
documentation suggests using network-admin for modem connection to the
Internet, because NetworkManager doesn't support it.

So now:

a) Documentation is misleading users.
b) There's no sensible way to connect using a modem.

Quite nice desgin you have here :)

lot during this, there are tons of USB reconnects.

So it seems libmtp does something funky with the device that causes it
to bounce.

Can you please start rhythmbox without the mouse attached, then open a
Terminal and do

   strace -vvfs1024 -o /tmp/strace.txt -p `pidof rhythmbox`

then plug in the mouse, wait a little, then press Control-C. Please
attach /tmp/strace.txt here. Thanks!

[Bug 489946] Re: nautilus audio preview should be active only in a focused window

2010-05-05 Thread Vish
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 237975 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237975

Marking bug as a duplicate of Bug #237975 .
As upstream is marking all audio preview bugs as dups of the main bug:
Also to note upstream comments:
the long term plans for preview is to have a preview pane, when we get this
the hover-preview functionallity for audio files will be moved to that and
require some explicit click to play.

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 237975
Mousing over an audio file on the desktop should not preview it.

[Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-05-05 Thread Nigel Babu
I spoke to the desktop team, this bug will get fixed only if upstream
makes a change. The decision was made at upstream GNOME level. Please
forward the patch upstream.

[Bug 250517] Re: gvfs performs slowly on bulk sftp transfers

2010-05-05 Thread Resolution
hey there

in 1 GBit LAN it is about 9 MB/s with nautilus and 3 or 4 times faster
using scp.

If you try this before copying

$ sudo cpufreq-selector -g performance

you'll get a slightly better performance using nautilus, but not that
much.

This was a test with karmic-karmic. After upgrading i'll test again with
lucid-lucid.
The problem seems to have something to do with the cpu as written before.

Is there noone who could help with this?

modems. Note you can use System-Preferences-Network Connections for
that. I've filed bug 575694.
