I am experiencing a similar problem. Same error messages. Recently upgraded from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. Although it is an intermittent problem and I cannot pin down why it sometimes works or doesn't work. When getting these error messages none of the menu bars appear. When there's not a problem everything appears to be normal. The home directory is mounted from a FreeBSD NFS server. Having the lock manager turn off gives a similar problem. [Bug 357254] [NEW] Safe to remove device name should be displayed in notification area
You have been subscribed to a public bug: This is more of a feature request than a bug and can be marked as a wishlist item. When all the partitions on a disk device have been unmounted, the notification area should display that the item is safe to be ejected (for a good 10 seconds until timeout - also disappears once the device has been removed). Currently Jaunty display the safe to remove device name dialog in the middle of the screen. This is not very sleek and does not work consistently (on some disks only). Nope. Actually the problem is GNOME related.
