[Bug 696175] [NEW] gnome-nettool ping failed

2011-01-01 Thread Eugene Mikhantiev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-nettool

gnome-nettool uses for ping command (when I ping ya.ru for example):

/bin/ping ping -b -c 5 -n ya.ru

So, it doesn't work, because second ping seen like server name. And as
a result, no packages received because host ping is unknown.

nautilus has nothing to do with this. Without understanding how update-
manager opens the browser and doing more investigation, you should just
leave the bug there

[Bug 58179] Re: Doesn't autohide on context menu close

2011-01-01 Thread Dan Allen
I wonder if this could be solved in a more general way by introducing a
autohide timeout to gnome-panel. When you are using the panel, it's a
very active operation. So even if the mouse cursor ends up resting on
the panel when you return to using the application (such as typing in a
console or word document) chances are you want the panel to hide
(assuming you use this proposed setting).

In short, I think the panel should have a setting that makes it
aggressively close by having an inactivity timeout.

In other words, I think part of the problem is tying autohide to mouse
out. It should be an option, not the only possibility.

[Bug 646034] Re: Peculiar icon display in nautilus

2011-01-01 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I request this bug to be re-opened. I had supplied information as
required. I also want to report that this problem has surfaced once
again. Please see the attached screenshots wherein:

1. In one there is no alignment or proper arrangement of the folder
icons.

2. In the other the icons are aligned but icon view does not sort the
icons according to name as I want it to.

Both problems have no explanation since I have done nothing to change
settings. They have happened on their own.

Expected behaviour:

1. All icons should be aligned/arranged properly
2. They should be arranged according to the order specified by user
(name/size/date whichever)

I can't figure this out since it has not happened before. Only seems a
10.04 problem

Please re-open this bug or allow me to file a new one with the same
report.

[Bug 582570] Re: VERY slow boot, no battery icon in panel

2011-01-01 Thread doobydave
Hi. The issue seemed to not occur this time.
Very rarely was I able to boot the previous versions properly without fiddling
with the rotating webcam. I will try again to verify the issue has been
resolved and I didn't merely experience a lucky boot..

Some of the questions I answered during the process seem a little
irrelevant given that the bug now no longer seems to exist.

Let me know if I can be of any further help.

[Bug 696201] Re: movie palyer doesn't start the movie

2011-01-01 Thread Simon Bull
I have also tried this.

I placed a DVD movie into my PC, and selected the 'play in movie player'
feature in the auto-run pop-up.
After doing this, movie player opened, but an error box appeared stating Could
not read from resource.

N.B. The movie works fine on Windows Media Player, using Windows XP, but
not on Ubuntu.

Simon

[Bug 696115] Re: Timezone should not require superuser on laptop

2011-01-01 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Everybody shouldn't be allowed to set the system timezone by default, as
it affects all users on the system. If you don't have administrator
rights on your laptop, you can ask the administrator to grant you the
rights for the org.gnome.clock.mechanism.settimezone PolicyKit action,
but this decision can't be made by Ubuntu.

Note that if you travel a lot, you may find convenient to define
locations in the preferences of the panel's clock. This way, you can see
the time in all the places you're interested in. Maybe the clock should
support showing the time according to a location without changing the
system timezone, but that would be another bug.

[Bug 582570] Re: VERY slow boot, no battery icon in panel

2011-01-01 Thread doobydave
Hi again. Sorry to complicate things, but thought I should mention this.

On trying again, I let the liveCD do it's thing with the new automatic hidden
boot menu (previously, I had activated the boot menu and selected the 'live'
option).
The new graphical menu appeared with the two choices, 'Try' and 'Install'. On
clicking 'Try', the mouse cursor changed to the busy one and the machine
appeared to do nothing else. Eventually, I hit Ctrl-Shft-F1 and rebooted from
the command line.

Is it worth trying to do the apport from this state or could this be
entirely unrelated?

Oh, that's silly!

It's a laptop, darn it!The other users will (almost certainly) be on
the console, and they'll be in the same time zone your are in. (Unless
they have *very* long arms.)

What you are proposing is not the normal use case for a laptop -- you
seem to be thinking that I carry my laptop around so that people can ssh
into it. That's quite rare.

the changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more
discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or

good start for determining which mailing list to use.

As stated above, the answer for an individual without admin rights is :

If you don't have administrator rights on your laptop, you can ask the
administrator to grant you the rights for the
org.gnome.clock.mechanism.settimezone PolicyKit action, but this
decision can't be made by Ubuntu.

[Bug 696115] Re: Timezone should not require superuser on laptop

2011-01-01 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
We can't change PolicyKit permissions depending on whether the system is
a laptop or not. So we'd have to make the change for all systems, which
is not necessarily what people expect. And even laptops can be used e.g.
in kiosks or schools, where you don't want people to play with system
settings.

I think the whole point will become obsolete anyway when GNOME 3
introduces automatic detection of location based on network. See
http://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings/DateAndTime for a rough
mockup, which is partly implemented upstream.

[Bug 696258] [NEW] cannot get files from bluetooth device - copying hangs forever, makes nautilus eat 100%CPU

2011-01-01 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

There must be more than one bug here, both in the package implementing
bluetooth funcionalities, and in Nautilus itself - anyway it is hard for
me to distinguish so the only thing I can do is report the problem as a
whole.

When trying to copy files from my phone to my computer via bluetooth I
get the following problem

1) On my phone, I turn bluetooth on, I turn on its bluetooth visibility and
make my files visible
2) In Ubuntu, I click on the bluetooth icon on the panel and select browse
files on device...
3) I select the device and click browse
4) On the phone, I am prompted to allow the Pc to access the files; I accept
5) On the computer, a Nautilus window opens which allows me to browse the
folders and files on the phone
6) In Nautilus, I leave this window open and I open a new one to browse my
local hard disk
7) In Nautilus, I select the files on my phone and drag'n'drop them into a
folder in my computer
8) Now on the phone I am prompted to give the Pc permission to get the files,
and here the problems begin

Normally, my phone would prompt me for each file to allow the transfer, and I
would always accept.
At random times, the following happens:

9) At any point, after accepting on the phone to allow getting the n-th
file, the computer gets stuck and never goes on; the phone never prompts
me to accept to allow getting the (n+1)-th file.

This is the first bug (computer is failing to send the request for the
following files; or the request has been lost for any reason, in which
case the computer should either resend it or pop up an error message
reporting the problem to the user, not just hang on forever)

10) Nautilus every once in a while starts consuming 100% CPU for a few
seconds and then goes back to normal

11) the File Operations windows stays open and shows a copying N
files to folder name progress bar which is stuck at a certain
percentage and never goes on. If I click on the X on the right to
abort the operation, the X turns gray but the operation is never
aborted and the File Operation window stays open forever

Here's the second clear bug in Nautilus: the file operation is not
aborted.

12) If I close the file operation windows the way yoy close any window
(with the close icon on the window's title bar), the window closes, but
the icon on the panel indicating a copy operation still remains. By
clicking on that icon on the panel, there is a show copy dialog
option: if I click it, the copy dialog shows up again (and the progress
bar is still at the same point).

So basically there's no way to abort that copy operation other than
manually killing the process or restarting the computer.

13) Nautilius still eats 100% CPU at random times.

So I think there are a couple of separate but related issues:

A) Bluetooth protocol implementation is terribly buggy. Copying files
from a device can hang at any point. It is even possible that the
phone's software is buggy and that the phone is not behaving correctly,
but even if this is the case, the computer's response is unacceptable:
it should give an error message and stop the operation, not hang on
forever

B) Nautilus has an issue in that when you try to abort a copy operation
by clicking on the X on the right next to the progress bar, the
abortion fails and the copy operation gets stuck forever and Nautilus
even eats 100%CPU.

** After restarting the computer and repeating the process again and again, I
get almost always the same result (with point 9 happening at any time, i.e.
sometimes after the first file sometimes after copying N files, with varying
N). Sometimes, instead, I get a different, still nonsense, behaviour:

after point (8), and after I allow the transfer from the phone, I get a
nonsense error message of which I remember the words error and
another operation - something like error copying file x: another
operation is pedning (these are not the exact words).

disc and waited for it to load. I right clicked on the disc icon on the

properties and set the disc write speed to 8x. I started the reading
part which went alright. I even inserted the blank disc when prompted

I'd have to insert a blank disc EVEN THOUGH I did. I inserted it a

[Bug 696076] Re: Nautilus crashes by open a folder with too many files

2011-01-01 Thread Omer Akram
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2011-01-01 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal )
:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

solved the color problem, at least for now, i figured the defaul value
for HUE is in the middle which rendered the colours altered. is this
normal? i took the slide to maximum (all the way right) and now it seems
ok. anyone who has access to these codes may want to modify the default
value of hue (remember, every player had altered colors not just one).
anyway thanks for your patience and i hope this helps anyone else with
the problem. Happy New Year!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. If you can test it,

updated logs by running apport-collect 640210, and any other logs that

[Bug 518533] Re: Unable to mount location Not Authorized after nautilus upgrade

2011-01-01 Thread David Gradwell
This happened to me again when I did a new clean install of Ubuntu 10.10
(on two different machines with the same problem).

The only workaround that works (for me) is to open two terminal windows
and in the first go:

  sudo blkid

to see the UUIDs of all devices.

In the second go

  sudo gedit /etc/fstab

and add an additional line for the device(s) that you can't mount.

A couple of examples that work for me are:

  UUID=87b43805-e339-4953-9c9c-328e71c0abdc /media/budisc  ext4 users,rw  0
 0
  UUID=744C979E4C975A26 /media/seagate  ntfs users,rw  0 0

Have system/administration/disk utility open at the same time. Mount
seems to work once the /etc/fstab file is updated.

Now grouping of contacts works, that's right.
But if a contact chooses to switch the protocol (which many of my friends

Did a little more research and empathy accesses Yahoo messenger through
telepathy-haze, which is a front-end for libpurple from the pidgin

[Bug 696350] [NEW] Can't move windows with workspace applet in Compiz

2011-01-01 Thread Sebastian Szperling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In Metacity, you can move windows from one workspace to another via the
workspace switcher applet. I find this very useful, but I use Compiz,
and this does not work. While you can drag the thumbnail to another
workspace, the thumbnail returns to the current desktop as soon as it is
released, and the window remains untouched.

Using Ubuntu 10.10
Related to compiz (1:0.8.6-0ubuntu9.1) and gnome-panel (1:2.30.2-1ubuntu3)

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2011-01-01 Thread Shlomil
If it works as a libvte replacement (and reasonably stable) then I think it
should be default in RTL environments.
However, IMO removal of libvte upon installation is not required. I think both
can live together using the Debian Alternatives System. libvte should be
available with a lower priority in the Alternatives list, which will make
MLTerm default when installed.

Note that Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron LTS desktop support will end in
April 2011, so you might want to think about upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04

As there is unlikely to be a patch for the version of Evince in Ubuntu
